Savio's - Alexandria Ratings and Reviews
I hadn't been in about a decade and won't return
There was really nothing redeeming after the bread. The service was slow throughout despite being fairly empty on a Sunday evening
5 of us ordered different dishes. The spaghetti with meat sauce for good reviews. The other 4 of us were disappointed with the taste of the food
We had a nice time and most of the food was great. Service was very kind and we thought it odd that the place was so empty. Yes, in a shopping center, and although nice inside, I would strongly suggest some attention to the ceiling panel stains. We had the rigatoni and pizza. Both delicious! The bruschetta and bread basket were mediocre. The tiramisu was just wrong. It tasted like a nutmeg cake was used instead of lady fingers which also overpowered any chance of coffee liqueur or cocoa flavor- the reason to get tiramisu! So overall, great entrees... steering clear of the rest.
The outside of the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. However, once inside, you walk into an overly-decorated, almost old-fashioned, restaurant that is comforting in its dated furnishings. I loved the bar, the small tables, the ambiance. Our reservation was for 5pm so the dining areas were almost empty, but you could imagine the wonderful atmosphere that it would have when full. The service was impeccable, not always the case even when business is slow in the afternoon. The food was very good and came out quickly, but not too fast. The carrot cake was to die for. All in all, would definitely recommend this restaurant as a change to the modern, sterile ones cropping up all over. Enjoy the ambiance and the service - they are a dying art.
This place didn't look like much from the outside, but once you're inside it's quite a shocking difference. Great cozy place with awesome decor. I've been missing having a local Italian place since moving to Alexandria, and now I've found what I've been looking for. The service was outstanding and the food was great. We will definitely be back.
This place is definitely a hidden gem! Service was superior and the food was beyond words as it was so AMAZING! I was skeptical as I have lived in the area for over 30 years and never knew this place existed. The fact that it is in a strip mall does not do it justice as when you walk into the restaurant you feel at home and then decor is authentic and superb! We will definitely be going back. We didn't have to ask for anything as our server was spot on with refills and was very pleasurable.
The food here is great and the atmosphere is nice, except for the nights when the band is blaring so loud you can't hear yourself think. Service is spotty. You are always going to have to ask for refills which is a pet peeve in my book. Still, the food is very good and it's a nice place to go for great Italian food.
I returned to Savio's after being away for several years and was terribly disappointed. My family and I had eaten there many times, because it used to serve reliably good Italian food. Not anymore. The kitchen apparently has changed, as has the quality of service. The food is barely edible now, and in retrospect I should have left it on the table and walked out. Consider this: a dry (no dressing) plate of lettuce loaded with grated cheese (supposed to be a Caesar Salad!). When I asked the waiter for the dressing, he brought a thick pasty gopp of stuff, which tasted like salty glue! I used plain olive oil from the table instead. Neither the chef nor the waiter seem to know the difference between pasta fagioli (which I ordered) and minestrone (which I received). When I told the waiter there must have been a mistake, since what they served was clearly NOT pasta fagioli, he took a spoon and poked around in the bowl and exclaimed "oh, there's a piece of pasta, and a bean". Seriously?! The ravioli with sausage was equally awful -- it tasted like leftover stuff that had been reheated a few times. Even the dessert (lemon cake) had a disgusting taste. Needless to say, I couldn't eat all that stuff, but since the waiter didn't seem to be interested in resolving the issue, and I wasn't in the mood for an argument, I decided at least to warn other people not to go there. A total waste of time and money, not to mention the memory of a disgusting meal!
We decided to try this place only because it was close to where we were and it was also open on Christmas Day. Much to our delight, this place is actually pretty good! The food tastes very authentic and the sodium level was very low which is always a plus for me. We will go back again!
Had absolutely no idea this restaurant was here. NEVER judge a book by it's cover. Walked in and was immediately transported to another place (Italy perhaps?!) and was shocked by the transformation. What shocked my family even more was the food. Fantastic and our new favorite restaurant closest to our house!
For the past 5 years, on my annual visit to Alexandria, Va., I make it a point to visit
Savio's at-least once and on every visit they never fail to impress me with their menu.
The food is superb and I exit the establishment completely satisfied. If you go once you will
definitely quote General MacArthur in saying "I shall return".
The place will not wow you with the ambiance or service. It is a little dated and it is not fine dining. However, when I need some good Italian food, I always think of Savio's. The garlic bread and ceasar salad are fantastic, we get it every time. My wife loves the veal marsala and I always order the spaghetti Bolognese which is cooked to perfection. The chicken parmesian is equivalent to what you experience in New York City. You'll love the food here.
Located in a strip shopping center, when you enter, you feel transported to Italy. The food was good, the portions were large, the house salad and salad dressing were great. Warm bread, easy to spread butter or oil. Reasonable prices. Great service. Very nice place.
My hubby and I go to Savio's every year for dinner on Valentine's Day (not sure why we don't think to go other times of the year, though we don't eat out much). The ambiance is always nice – soft lighting, lovely Italian decor. They also have red balloons and other Valentine's Day decor. The food was delicious as usual, and the portions were generous. Our server Paula was sweet and provided good service. The dessert tray they bring out to show you the selection was so pretty (and delicious looking!) This is a solid dining spot in the west end of Alexandria that I'd recommend to anyone looking for a delicious Italian meal.
My husband and I went out to dinner here for the first time this weekend. We just returned from a trip to Italy in early September, and have been looking for Italian cuisine that would bring us back to the days of our vacation. THIS WAS IT! The food was authentic, delicious, and fresh. Best Italian food we have found in the area. We will definitely be back to try everything on the menu, one at a time! The portions are large and filling, and the price is unbeatable. Great job Savio's!
We booked this restaurant with a quiet Italian dinner in mind. The shock set in as we entered the shopping center, which has seen better days. The restaurant is very informal with many families present (noisy children). Service is friendly but haphazard. The food is surprisingly good...excellent marinara sauce and herbed oil. Next time, we will not get dressed up to come to this casual restaurant with delicious food.
What can I say--very good Italian food served promptly by a capable staff. Wine list is nothing to write home about, but their house chianti is good. Not for a big night out, but great for a "let's go out to dinner, I didn't get to the market" evening. Veal dishes are an especially good value.
The food was just so-so. I would have thought for Restaurant Week, they would have done something to recommend their kitchen. The food was okay, but just not worth stopping in for unless you live in the neighborhood. The service was friendly enough, but they just didn't take time to set the table properly or to clean a spill. The waitress handed a napkin to my table mate and told him to wipe it up. Just odd. The staff seem to need some polishing up in their training and that would fix it. Otherwise decent for the price. I'd go again if a friend really wanted to go, but I'd probably try to talk them into another Italian place first.
