Sausalido, "The Local Bistro and Full Service Catering Company,” was opened in 2008 by Nicholas Mineo. Mineo and his executive chef, Michael Simpson, present fresh and delicious gourmet dishes by executing authentic New American & European cuisine. The name Sausalido was inspired by the small, intimate community of Sausalito outside of San Francisco in Northern California and by Mineo's grandfather, Lido. Wonderful service and fantastic meal! I'm always cautious eating out because I have a dairy allergy. The waitress and chef worked with me to alter a main dish just a little, so I could enjoy it dairy-free, but without losing any of it's grandeur. Always a great time and BYOB!
Neighborhood gem -- it was my first visit -- BYOB and no corkage fee.
Different food types -- so be prepared.
Appetizer -- smoked gouda was outstanding.
Polenta and sausage was tasty and not overwhelming.
Service is friendly and professional.
Will return for sure.
We selected this restaurant based on the reviews and four stars. Unfortunately, we left wondering why the reviews were so favorable. When we arrived, they seemed bothered, unprepared and surprised by our arrival despite being on their reservation list. A table was not ready in the main downstairs dining so we were shuttled upstairs to the dark and windowless restaurant area on the second floor. The appetizers were the best part of the meal. We should have stopped there. Our main dishes were disappointing, very tough pork tenderloin and under-cooked Swedish meatballs which seemed to be missing something (nutmeg?). The pumpkin ravioli was also under-cooked. The waiter was very friendly and accommodating which we appreciated, however, he stated he was called in last minute and usually only does catering. I hope this was just a bad night, however, we will not return.
I have been going to this restaurant for many years. The food is always delicious! We have never had a bad meal. Nick the owner is hard working and very gracious. Mike is an innovative and excellent chef. The hostess and waitstaff are warm and friendly. They all stopped and conversed with us. Very pleasant dining experience!
Unfortunately, my latest experience at Sausalido's was tainted due to the poor service. A 7:00 pm reservation was made via OpenTable a couple of days in advance. I choose Sausalido's as they accept reservations, and I was on a time crunch to make a 9:00 pm event. Unfortunately, Sausalido's did not value my reservation. I arrived 15 minutes early to make sure I was not late for the reservation. I did not expect our table to be ready as I was early, but at least the hostess knew I was ready and waiting. Shortly after 7:00 pm, I asked the hostess if our table was ready, and she noted that it would be ready shortly. After not being escorted to our table, I checked with the hostess yet again at 7:15 pm. With little luck, I then informed on of the wait staff at 7:25 pm, where we were then seated upstairs at 7:30 pm. I waited 45 minutes for a table that I had already reserved for 7:00 pm. Not only that, the table was upstairs, which they could have easily sat us at earlier in the evening. We then had to rush through dinner, so not to be late for our show. Not only that, but one of friends received a cold dish, but we did not want to complain as it would take us even longer. All of this resulted in us then having to spend money to take an uber to our location as we no longer had time to relocate our vehicles and find parking. We did not make it to our show until after 9:00 pm; therefore, we could not find seats together. I was very disappointed in Sausalido's and their service. Now I have been there before, but for a 5:00 pm reservation, so we were seated right away (as there was no one else there yet). If you decide to go to Sausalido's please make sure you either make a 5:00 pm reservation, or give yourself plenty of time to be seated.
The bread and bean dip were really good!!
Polenta was like a brick (I had a Nona and Sunday dinner of polenta that was made in a copper pot, served on wooden board and cut with string) yours basically sucked
Sauasage was grainy - sauce under seasoned.
Tables are unevenly spaced and bolted to the wall.
Server was really nice. I felt like the manager was sent to move us along. Not in a subtle way.
The experience was great. The staff was so friendly and helpful couldn't be better. The food was creative and very tasty. The portions were so much larger than expected that we over ordered and were carrying some home, which will be very welcome for dinner tonight. Can't think of anything that needed improvement.
Every time I have eaten at Sausalido they do not disappoint. The service is always great, and on this particular outing with friends we all commented on how we didn't feel rushed by staff to get moving. It's also a major bonus that it is BYOB with a minimal cork fee. We had the Brussels sprouts and Brie and apple crostini appetizers, both were great. Among the three of us we split the mushroom risotto and butternut squash ravioli and we had leftovers to take home. Both dishes were great but if you're between the two Id encourage you to try the ravioli. Overall a great experience and genuinely have no complaints, we love this restaurant and will definitely be back.
We were seated almost an hour after our reservation time. Even though they were apologetic and tried to hurry it along , it was still annoying. When we finally ordered they had run out of something that 2 of us had ordered. The menu is small with limited choices, so that made it a hard decision as to what they would eat.
On a brighter note, our waitress was wonderful and she tried in any way that she could to make our evening nicer. She brought the food out quickly and was very pleasant. The presentation of the food was very nice and all entrees were quite tasty.
This was my first time dining at Sausalido. The food was delicious and serving size was VERY generous! Our waitress was so sweet and attentive. I had dinner with 2 friends who I don't see often enough and we had a lot of "catching up to do" . The chef even came out and introduced himself and asked how we enjoyed our meals. We did not feel rushed or pressured to order,finish or leave. I will definitely be back! Thank you!
Sausalido continues to be my favorite Pittsburgh restaurant. Exceptional food, fine service, nice ambiance. The prices are surprisingly low considering the outstanding quality of the food served. Everything is freshly and uniquely prepared. Generous portions. You can't find a better meal at a better price in this city, in my opinion.
One of my favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. They have a great, seasonal menu with a variety of offerings. Our group had the blackened ahi tuna, which was done to perfection. the seasoning was full of flavor, but not over powering and the wasabi aioli added a nice finish. The southern-style pork chop with grits was tender and juicy, and the roasted duck was perfectly done, thinly-sliced, and served with potatoes w/prosciutto along with spiced apples and pears. The only thing that I can even offer as a critique is that the potatoes were a bit too salty for my taste buds and the dish really didn't need the extra prosciutto because the duck was so delicious.
We went with another couple. Knew it was BYOB, so took our own wine. Tuna was way over seasoned! The crab cakes and steak options were both great. We used an Entertainment coupon and saved $18. Bill was $132 for four meals and two appetizers. The smoked Gouda was out of this world. No drinks ordered, just waters. Was a nice atmosphere early at 5:30 PM. Did get louder as more tables showed up, but not intrusive. Overall, an okay experience.
Sausalito is consistently a good value. The prices are reasonable; you don't get nickeled and dimed for salad; the bread and spread are good, too. It's BYO, so you can keep the price down that way, too. The menu isn't huge but always seems to have a nice variety so everyone in a group can find something they want. I would recommend it for supper or a get together with friend.
The restaurant has greatly improved its appearance since the last time I was there for lunch. The tables were somewhat sticky from whatever substance was used to paint them, but they were visually pleasing.
The menu had plenty of non-meat options for Good Friday, and I chose Eggplant Parmesan Risotto. It came out of the kitchen at room temperature and needed to be sent back. It was better though not hot. It also was quite bland and I needed to ask for salt and pepper. I brought home more than 3/4 of it and didn't bother to eat it.
The service was generally good and quick, perhaps a little too quick. We were never asked about coffee.
Prices were great, and it's BYOB, so that's a great appeal.
Dinner last Friday night before concert. Server Justin made sure we on pace to finish in time to get to show. Food was excellent. Had pappardelle pasta and trout special. BYOB so makes this place an incredible value. Place is small so reservations are recommended if you're going on saturday night or special occasion.

My husband and I ate there on a Wed afternoon following an appointment. We arrived early before evening service began, but they were very gracious in seating us, opening our BYOB wine, and providing delicious bread and dip to nibble on. My husband got the tuna entree and I got the salmon. Both were perfectly prepared. The corkage fee of $2 of person is one of the most reasonable around, so the overall meal was a great value.
Definitely request the upstairs seating area. The 1st Floor seating area is tight and not up to par with the price your paying for meals. The upstairs is much more quaint.
Made reservations on open table requesting the upstairs seating area. Got there they didn't even read the reservation notes (special requests). I had to ask then twice to read. Was a special birthday dinner just 2 of us. Was told that there was a private birthday party upstairs.
After reading the reservation they moved us upstairs to a table in same area. Only two small sections of upstairs seating. But still our own table. Later as we were leaving they seated about separate group of 3 young girls at the remaining separate table upstairs.
It seemed like they wanted to fill up the downstairs seating first no matter what. Sigh. Other then that which did make a rough start to the night, the food was good, large portions. Would have gone with cup of soup for appetizers instead of bowl. Too large for a person with a meal too. Good sized meals and deserts.
Byob was great only that charge per person. We brought 2 bottles of wine.
