SATO considers itself to be a modern Izakaya (think Japanese tapas and shareable plates) which blends traditional Japanese cuisine with contemporary flare. The menu changes with the seasons and local finds in combination with creative and traditional dishes inspired by Chef Satomi’s culinary roots in Japan. Pair them with the widest selection of premium sake in the Buffalo-Niagara area. The owner Josh is a certified Sake Sommelier.
Along with the smaller plates, ramen and Japanese curry are specialties of the restaurant. Chef Satomi's pork (tonkotsu) and chicken (torigara) based ramen noodles are a tweaked recipe from her family's restaurant in Fukui, Japan.

Friendly staff, authentic and delicious food. Also had the cucumber and coconut sake which was amazing! Definitely going back!
They ran out of salmon. They being a sushi place ran out of salmon !!!
Amazing food, super friendly service
Sato is a very nice upscale Japanese restaurant, food is vey good!
Amazing food!! Wonderful staff and relaxing atmosphere.
Had my first visit, recently, and I wasn't disappointed. We had a California roll, the cucumber was crisp and fresh, sashimi, omg the scallop, and miso ramen. The food, and drinks, took a little long to make their way to the table, but it was worth the wait.
Great Ramen bowls and awesome beer
My husband and I have been to Sato before twice and have loved the food and experience. This time we took a few friends with us and the food was still amazing but the service was very slow. The waiter never came to to table to ask if we needed more water or anything. Then we waited 20 minutes for the bill. There was a couple that even sat next to our table, the waiter never even came to grab their drink order so they left.
The food is amazing the service is outstanding I would go back again and again!
Food was amazing and the portions were a great size. Our waitress wasn't super personable and it was a little noisy but everything was so yummy I really didn't care.
Service was slow. There was a table of 6 that Sat down a few minutes after us and their waitress came over immediately to greet them and give them water. My husband and I sat there for about 5 minutes before our waitress even came over. She did not come back and ask us how our food was during the meal until we were done.
Very good eclectic Japanese food with great saki selection. Good for a casual night out.
Great food with diverse menu to pick from. Fish used in sushi dishes was very fresh and tasty. Excellent service. Fun place to dine, consistently good.
My husband and I are vegan and there are quite a few options, even sushi! Everything was delicious and we will definitely be back!
Hip/cute restaurant in a fun and vibrant neighborhood. Great saki selection. Ramen was good and the restaurant was happy to make substitutions. Was slightly disappointed with their sushi selection, but the variety of other appetizers available made up for it.
the food is absolutely delicious. the service was fantastic and friendly.
Awesome Spicy Miso! Very tasty
the server was terrific, she suggested a terrific special, I really enjoyed it. the beer she pointed me to was really what I was thirsty for that night. My wife's meal was kinda bland but still good. We will be back again for sure.
Fantastic food! The service at the Elmwood location tends to be super slow...the waiter screwed up our sushi roll order, but it wasn’t worth the fuss because they were delicious!
We were really excited to dine here. Walked in and everyone seemed in a panic. It wasn’t super busy. Went up to our table and again. Not super busy. Wasn’t sure what was going on. Our table was wet from just being wiped down and stunk.
The waiter came over and was in another world. He just seemed pre occupied. Barely came by to check on us and didn’t bring over the beer that was ordered the food had already come out
We ran out of water no more for us. It was just disappointing. We wanted to sit and enjoy our daughters birthday but we were going no where with the waiter we finished and left. Hopefully the other staff is a little better than him.
We ordered off the special valentine’s menu, as well as some extra side orders, and everything was quick and delicious!
The Ramen dishes are the best in the city!
Excellent food, servers are nice but need to be trained a little more thoroughly re. Sake and drinks. Our server didn’t know anything about that, and once she admitted that, the should have sent over someone who did know. Otherwise, very nice experience.
SATO is always enjoyable always honor our table requests food was hot and delicious a real gem on the Elmwood strip
Sato on Elemwood has really come a long way since its inception some years ago. In their early days I was slightly underwhelmed by the food but it has been stellar for the past 2 or 3 years. Highly recommended!
ps. Terrific staff too! :)
Raman dishes were amazing and appetizers as well. I would stick with that. Sushi and sashimi is average.
A wonderful experience! The food was delicious, the server comped our salad because the entree took a little extra time getting to us, and the service in general was attentive without hovering. Make a reservation though--it's a small, very popular restaurant that may not be able to accommodate you without one.
I love Satos and this is why I chose your restaurant to celebrate my birthday with my family. Problem- we waited 1/2 hour to order and another half hour for our entrees. In addition, four meals were brought out in sequence however my son's meal was forgotten. We had to ask the waitress about his meal. Again, he had to wait while we ate- not cool! The waitress finally came with his entree and said, 'no charge for his meal' ($13). When the bill came, my son's entree clearly billed, unfortunately my son-in-law paid for the entire bill (party of seven) before examing the check. This dinner was part of my birthday gift. When I encouraged him to call the server, he declined. The food was very good, however it was noticable that the restaurant was understaffed. On two occasions, the server dropped and broke glassware- the one incident, glass shattered next to our table nearest to our small grandchildren. Overall, the experience was truly disappointing.
We had excellent food. They appeared short staffed because there was one waitress on for lunch.
Sushi and sashimi are mediocre. Rolls are creative. Ramen is very good. Appetizers are tasty. Craft cocktails are excellent. Would go again, but skip the sushi and sashimi. Very friendly service
The food was fresh but somewhat tasteless. The avocado ingredient needed to ripen.
I have been to Sato many times and always had a good experience. This time was a disappointment because the food was bland. The service was good and welcoming.
The food was tasty and Isabel was lovely. It’s a smaller restaurant, and we were close to a larger party, so it was a little loud at times, but nothing unpleasant. My friend and I enjoyed our meals!
Sushi and Ramen were very good. Also impressed by the mixed drinks
The food was ok. We had the age dashi tofu as the appetizer, then shared the chef’s choice sashimi and the spicy miso ramen. The tofu was not crispy enough on the outside, spicy miso ramen was too salty, sashimi was fine. The orange beer was good. Service was not good, The drinks did not come, we had to ask for them when the food showed up. When we asked for an extra bowl to share the ramen it never came, we had to go get it ourselves. There was not that busy but the waitress did not seem to able to handle. Location is good, decor was cute, rest room was very clean.
Great unique food. I felt a little bit too close to the other tables. But overall I enjoyed the drinks, the food and the waitress was very friendly.
I love Sato!! It’s always soo good when I go there! Our waitress Autumn was super nice too!!
No much flavor to the food. Had the butter Ramien bowl and the spicy tuna roll
This Elmwood Avenue sushi and Japanese place has food ranging from excellent sushi to ramen and similar bowls. It's a neighborhood place, nothing fancy, but friendly, very good value, good service, and one of the two or three best sushi places in Buffalo. It's not far geographically from Kuni's, but a little bigger, and has the advantage of taking reservations.
Great service(thank you Emma!) and fabulous Butter Ramen! Thank you. We’ll be back
