Set in an array of Victorian rowhouses, Sassafraz has evolved through the decades to become a magical space in the heart of historic Yorkville. Located at the corner of Bellair and Cumberland, the little yellow house has "seen it all" from the early hippie movement of the 60"s to the lack of movement that comes from too much Bordeaux. Sassafraz offers an exceptional menu serving market-driven, French-inspired Canadian cuisine.

Sassafraz Ratings and Reviews
We have been here many times before and always enjoyed. Usually my boyfriend orders the beef tenderloin and I opt for a different dish so we can try each others. This time I ordered the beef tenderloin so I wouldn’t be wishing I had ordered it after trying his. Our food came out extremely quick, usually a great thing but when you’ve ordered a medium rare and it comes out blue that’s not optimal. The outside of the tenderloin were slightly warm and browned but cutting into the beef if was cold and completely raw inside. I sent it back to have it cooked more, it came out very quickly again... still undercooked but at least not cold. I didn’t want to be that extremely fussy person sending it back a second time so I ate it, I wish I hadn’t. Both my boyfriend and I got extremely sick through the night. I have been going to sassafraz for years, but that was my last time. This place isn’t as good as it once was.
We were seated in a very cozy corner in the dining room where we could see the full moon casting its light through the cathedral shaped skylight.
We had the pea, asparagus soup, oysters, beef tartar with frites, shrimp pasta and finished off the meal with the creme brûlée and expresso. We enjoyed the meal, atmosphere and Michael our server that eve was excellent.
After dinner we made our way to the piano lounge where we were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful and entertaining pianists Sebastien and John.
I would highly recommend this restaurant for the food, atmosphere and pre or after dinner lounge entertainment.
Excellent service! The chef and server were very accommodating to my husband's vegan diet. They customized the meal for him and saved his birthday! The only recommendation I have is to increase the portion of the meals a tad bit. Other than that, we shall be returning.
A longtime favourite for special occasions. Dining room or more casual bar cafe. We had lunch after a nearby meeting. The service was excellent as usual. The food was nicely prepared, though bland compared to other visits. We had two noisy groups seated near us, which made conversation difficult until they left. Overall, enjoyable but not quite up to the Sassafraz standard.
Went for a birthday, food was nice, servers were informative of the food, waitress's attitude was great, professional and cheerful, also responsive and aware of your table when needed.
if you looking for purely amazing food that makes you wow, I don't think this is the place.
but if you want good food, good environment with very high quality staff that wont embarrass you for any occasion. This is a very good option for that.
birthday desert was served before the bill.
A few issues, why not gluten free breads... It was brunch. Need to have it for egg dishes! Wine was delivered and served warm; they held it in the back to cool.. Why not a ice bucket by guest? Food was good. Presentation for Tuna could have been prettier. Thank u
I had suggested my friend to go there for brunch and i felt bad.
At 12.30 on sunday they were out of ‘sausage’ which was one of the main ingredients in their menu (the one. I’ve selected) . Unacceptable, they didn’t suggest complimentary fruit or coffee or something, they charged full price. Oh, almost forgot.. doulbles up the bacon with some extra-crispy (burnt) bacon. And there was a half kumato tomato, small size .
My friend got rhe egg whites with quinoa salad, it was no salad, just some sprinkles
Never going there again for food. Just for some drinks in the patio in summer
Attended an early dinner slot prior to theatre. We let our server know we were tight for time. He was fantastic, getting our drinks, appetizers and mains to us at a steady flow but we never felt rushed. Great wine pairings revommended by our server and they presented my husband with a lovely piece of cheesecake for desert in honour of his birthday.
All in all a lovely evening.
Came for my brunch with my friend and ordered the lobster croque madame and pancakes. The portion of the lobster dish was a little disappointing but the taste was good. We both enjoyed the pancakes. I would probably return at some point to try their dinner menu but maybe not brunch again.
Beautiful place for music but unfortunate that there is not jazz offered nightly. Food and presentation were very good. Service started out beautifully but this tendency, now seemingly in use in all restaurants, even fine dining ones, to lavish lots of attentive service and style at the beginning of the meal from a main server and maitre d' but to then have a new person serve everything else each time, then collect emptied plates the same way over the rest of the evening is impersonal and detracts from a dining experience. I am personally hoping this practice is dropped.
It was a pleasant surprise to see the renovated dining room with the living wall and water fall - gorgeous. I would certainly recommend the dining room however it did get a little noisy with the children in the room. I would think dinner would be much quieter. Great brunch experience.
Food and atmosphere are excellent!
The waiter (Corey - spelling) that served us had a causal attitude and was quite informal using terms like 'for sure'. He even suggested that while the tuna is served seared and raw in the center, it could be cooked all the way through - not a good suggestion in our opinion. We also noted him leaning on the wall while taking orders at another table - again quite casual.
As he excused his reach across the table I noted that his shirt sleeves were quite soiled leading me to wonder about cleanliness in general. I would expect that at a restaurant of this caliber that wait staff would be held to standards that include clean clothes, hands etc.
This waiter also struggled with proper timing. We ordered dessert and coffees and at the same time indicated that we'd like one more glass of wine. He brought the coffee before the wine. Clearly the wine should have come first followed by the coffee and dessert.
This service took away from our overall enjoyment but we will be back.
Hoping this is helpful.
