Set in an array of Victorian rowhouses, Sassafraz has evolved through the decades to become a magical space in the heart of historic Yorkville. Located at the corner of Bellair and Cumberland, the little yellow house has "seen it all" from the early hippie movement of the 60"s to the lack of movement that comes from too much Bordeaux. Sassafraz offers an exceptional menu serving market-driven, French-inspired Canadian cuisine.

Sassafraz Ratings and Reviews
It was a pleasant place for my birthday lunch. The service was friendly yet professional. The place was not very busy so staff was attentive. Perhaps they could have allowed a bit more time for one to savour the ambiance, after all it was a celebration not business lunch.
First date ...
The martini's were watered down and we had to send the oysters back.
The menu looked amazing and the piano player was fantastic.
We decided not to take a chance on the main and we walked to another cute place near by.
Maybe it was a one off bad night for them?
The date ended up being wonderful but Sassafraz didn't do it for us.
Service was great. The food was a bit slow. Most of the dishes for the evening were over seasoned. Though for the groupon offer, it offered quite a wide selection. It is no longer a special dining experience given now that there are a lot more great restaurant all over Toronto as compared to 10 years ago.
I always go to Sassafraz to celebrate my husband's birthday each year and we have never been disappointed. The food is always delicious and the staff are generally very attentive. I would suggest going earlier then later as I found it was quite noisy later in the evening.
Food was great - but not all of it was amazing. We had ordered the beef brisket poutine and octopus as appetizers. The server was not very attentive and did not repeat our order. We ended up with pulled pork instead of poutine! He also had to come back to ask what my husband ordered for dessert again. Was quite disapppointed by the service. The mains were better as our order was correct! The veal had lots of tendon in it. Notably the steak knife was given to my husband even though he ordered scallops! I expected the service to be a little more attentive at this establishment.
As another reviewer noted, we came for the food and will come back for the service. Very low key though attentive (actually got called by name as the server took the effort to note the reservation name on his own).
Food was consistently good - ingredients fresh and love their take on common dishes (like poutine). Was not pressed for time and the pacing was perfect.
A friend recommended this restaurant, and it turned out to be very worthwhile. There is a fairly noisy bar, but the restaurant itself, behind a door, is calm, and the white tableclothed decor suggests formality and sophistication.
The menu is well chosen, and the wine list reasonably comprehensive.
Food was good; service was excellent.
We arrived for a 6:30 reservation, service was a little slow, but we did order and the food was great. While waiting for our dessert we were asked if we were told that we would have to vacate our table by 8:30pm. It must have taken at least 15:00more ,minutes for our dessert to arrive. Meanwhile our cappuccinos are getting cold! Finally our dessert arrived and we requested the bill. Not a nice way to end a celebratory evening - even if it is approx a week before Christmas.
Server was great, she was friendly, quick, and conversed well.
The food was just ok to be honest.
The escargot and bacon I had was bland (Weird considering bacon itself is salty)
The lamb meatballs weren't very flavorful either
My friend and I both left simply saying wow, that was just “Meh!”
We have been here many times before and always enjoyed. Usually my boyfriend orders the beef tenderloin and I opt for a different dish so we can try each others. This time I ordered the beef tenderloin so I wouldn’t be wishing I had ordered it after trying his. Our food came out extremely quick, usually a great thing but when you’ve ordered a medium rare and it comes out blue that’s not optimal. The outside of the tenderloin were slightly warm and browned but cutting into the beef if was cold and completely raw inside. I sent it back to have it cooked more, it came out very quickly again... still undercooked but at least not cold. I didn’t want to be that extremely fussy person sending it back a second time so I ate it, I wish I hadn’t. Both my boyfriend and I got extremely sick through the night. I have been going to sassafraz for years, but that was my last time. This place isn’t as good as it once was.
We were seated in a very cozy corner in the dining room where we could see the full moon casting its light through the cathedral shaped skylight.
We had the pea, asparagus soup, oysters, beef tartar with frites, shrimp pasta and finished off the meal with the creme brûlée and expresso. We enjoyed the meal, atmosphere and Michael our server that eve was excellent.
After dinner we made our way to the piano lounge where we were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful and entertaining pianists Sebastien and John.
I would highly recommend this restaurant for the food, atmosphere and pre or after dinner lounge entertainment.
