Sasa is a Japanese inspired restaurant in Walnut Creek. Izakaya Restaurants are traditional small plate restaurants where friends go to have a drink and unwind after a long day. Situated in the historic 100 year old building that for many years housed the Walnut Creek Meat Market, this architectural jewel has been transformed into a ambiance that wows and invites guests to stay and enjoy the dining experience at SASA. Chef/Owner Philip Yang prepare Japanese influenced dishes from around the world. The staff welcomes you into their house and offers up comfort, hospitality and fun. The restaurant includes a full bar with a large Sake selection, outdoor patio, sushi bar and a commitment to fresh local seasonal faire.

*Note: Personal wines welcome, a $20 corkage fee will apply per bottle. Dessert plating fee of $2.50 per person for outside desserts. Please note Sasa has patio seating that is enclosed and heated.

This was my second visit to Sasa and while my first visit (two weeks ago, on a Saturday night) was great, my second (Tuesday night) was a bit underwhelming and not worth the cost. The quality of the food preparation seemed to be vastly different- my Saturday night visit was excellent and this time, the salmon melt roll, which I'd also ordered on my previous visit, was not as beautifully presented and there was less salmon. I had to send back the sea bass as it was so overcooked, it was dry and had to be pried apart with a fork. A bit disappointed. If you're looking for excellent Japanese food, go for Ippuku or Kirala.

My favorite restaurant by far. Outstanding food, good service (most of the time), and wonderful ambiance. The prices are on the high side, particularly if you order Sake, but not too high compared with lesser Japanese restaurants.

Food is always amazing with service to match. I don't drink, but they seem to have a very extensive drink menu/full bar, and the whole ambiance of the place is very serene. The staff are highly attentive, but not to the point of overkill. They balance it perfectly.

The food itself is 5 stars no doubt. The ingredients, presentation, and fusion of various flavors are impeccable and i've never eaten anything I didn't enjoy as much as the next dish. You cannot go wrong no matter what you order.

Sasa is not cheap, but it's worth the money for a special occasion. Gift cards also make great gifts, so friends/family can splurge on high-end cuisine that they'd not normally treat themselves to.

Ordering can be difficult simply because everything on the menu always sounds great. The three dishes I look forward to the most are:

-Hamachi Kama (seems to be seasonal, but must-order when avail)
-Black cod (another must-have, no brainer. The most tender, flavorful cod you'll ever have)
-Garlic Shiro Maguro (white tuna nigiri that melts in your mouth like no other)

Delicious and consistent. Just wish they could be a little more free to create a roll or poke bowl that’s not on the menu.

Most disappointed. The fish was okay... especially the black cod. The dessert was horrible.
We were celebrating two birthdays and was very disappointing. Will not go again.

Great experience. Lou’s service was prompt and attentive as always without rushing us. Food was excellent. Host accommodated us with a great table, even though we arrived earlier than our reservation. Overall a great dining experience.

Still our go to place in Walnut Creek for happy hour and dinner. This time and even on Valentines night it was awesome. Service and staff and food and everything were amazing. Thanks Jason, Mike and your terrific staff.

Disappointed in the food. Seared ahi was anything but - over cooked and rubbery. The dish itself was so unappealing and set the tone for the rest of the meal. Overpriced for what it was. Won’t be going back or recommending.

Another very good experience at Sasa. The food is always inventive, fresh and tasty. This place is definitely a cut above the standard Japanese places you see all over walnut creek. It offers a much wider menu, many more small plates and a lot of variation in textures and flavors.. all of it well prepared and fresh.

This time the service was also exceptional, although its usually pretty good this was special. the server knew his menu, offered suggestions when appropriate and was there when we needed him and not there when we didn't.

we will be back

Ours was a great dining experience! Table was ready( we were party of 6). We were seated right away, on time!Food is delicious-especially the beef dishes. Wait staff very nice and accommodating even while they were packed with diners! Great job everyone! We love the food there-never had a bad dish. All were wonderful! Thank you!

It's alright. Food is pretty good. Prices are okay. Service isn't very good.
Place was better a couple of years ago. Seemed kind of cool then. Now it seems stale and boring. No improvements/positive changes made. Service has gone downhill. Still, it's okay, just not anything to get excited about.
