Since its opening in October of 2013, Sarma has been Somerville's go-to neighborhood spot for Middle-Eastern and Eastern-Mediterranean inspired cuisine. Here, Chef/Co-Owner Cassie Piuma serves up casual & carefully constructed small plates that pack in bold flavors and highlight Piuma's exquisite culinary command of spices, textures, and colors. Sarma's bar opens daily at 5 PM- drop by to try one of our house cocktails, or to sample our range of craft beers and eclectic wines. Walk-ins are always welcome and are greeted on a first-come first-served basis. Please note, reservations are highly encouraged. Also, don't forget that Sarma offers a late night menu option Sunday-Thursday at starting at 10 PM, and Friday & Saturday starting at 11 PM.

I have been wanting to try Sarma for quite some time, but it is hard to get a reservation. I finally went for a 9:45 reservation last friday night. It is in a pretty deserted part of somerville and knowing where to park was a bit of a challenge with mostly resident parking in the area. We started off with 2 cocktails, which were both quite good. Everything on the menu looked delicious, so we ordered 5 or 6 different small plates to try. They all came out very quickly, so perhaps it is best to order 2 at a time. The pumpkin fritters were taste bites, but I wish they were a bit crispier and less mushy. The favorite of the night was the halibut. Really full of flavor and deliciously prepared. The crab kibbeh was also good. Our disappointment was the harissa bbq duck (which to me sounded the best on the menu), but it was quite fatty (as duck can be) and the flavor (like on a lot of the dishes here) was a bit overpowering. I like and appreciate strong flavors and spice, but in a few of the dishes we tried there was not much subtlety or layering of tastes. We liked the brussels with chorizo, but they were not extra special in any way to me. We enjoyed the sun chokes more than we expected to, nice flavor and texture. All in all it was a good, tasty meal and I would give this place another try. But I was not too blown away, which I had hoped to be after the reviews and word of mouth.
Went to Sarma with my teenage son. We absolutely loved the food, especially the venison wrapped dates and brisket shawarma. There were specials passed around and we loved two of those too. Desserts were delicious. Great, friendly service. I had a bourbon cocktail that was yummy. Would definitely return!!
Overall, I had a really positive experience at Sarma. Few things that stood out:
1) we got messaged by the restaurant that they had earlier availability if we wished to do so
2) they had excellent display of daily specials that were rotated by the waiters and brought to each table as an additional option for purchase . However, alt ought I liked it, it could be annoying as they made at least 4 stops by our table in 1 hr... so felt slightly pressured to buy it.
Absolutely delicious! My partner and I came here for our anniversary and we were very pleased. Everything on the menu sounded fantastic and we were really happy with the 5 dishes we ordered. Drinks were great too. The waiter came over with a champagne toast at the end because I had mentioned on Open Table that it was our anniversary. Such a lovely surprise :) Will come back!
We made a reservation here because we saw this restaurant rated as one of the nations top on the EATER website. The dishes, one after the other, amazed and surprised us. I have never had anything like their french fry chraimeh - OMG crazy delicious. The crab kibbeh, the halibut, the shrimp skewers that they were offering as a 'special' - flavors are out of this world. everything was amazing. next time in boston, this will be #1 on my list.
The food was AMAZING!! Every dish was like a flavor explosion in my mouth! The service was pretty lacking, though. Not sure if we were in between sections but there was a long stretch of 30 min when we were sitting there without drinks or food, asking if we could order drinks, but everyone kept saying they would send over our waiter. Hopefully that was just a mix up. We will def be back for the food! We hope the service is better at that point!
Sarma definitely lives up to expectations. Halfway through our meal we were already planning out what we’d get next time! Be aware that they come around offering special dishes at random times throughout the evening, so it might be best to not over order right after arriving.
The only negative for me was that the chairs were rather uncomfortable, but I suppose that leads to more turnover?
This is our second time there and although most of the food was still very good the overall experience was a lot less amazing than the first time. The waiter was slow and constantly forgot what we ordered. The food was way too spaced out and brought up at odd times. Only two specials came by and they were both not very exciting, in July we couldn't stop picking up the many specials that kept coming. The lighting and atmosphere was not pleasant, too bright and somehow unfriendly. I feel that it's like Oleana's all over again, started really great and then fizzled out.
I don't think I'll be going back there any time soon. The fact that you also have to make reservations two months in advance for a Friday 6 p.m. spot is another unpleasant detail. If only it was worth the effort but it really isn't anymore.
Last but not least - I feel that deep frying was used excessively in almost all dishes. The three of ordered 9 dishes and by the end of the meal I had a very uncomfortable feeling in my stomach which lasted until next morning. And the ricotta donuts had way too much cinnamon, it was overpowering the whole dessert.
Maybe this was all because it was the day after Thanksgiving but I felt in general that the feeling was not of excitement and food celebration but a general feeling of lethargy.
This was one of the best meals we have had in a long time. Every one of the dishes we tried so packed with complex flavors, and yet the ingredients themselves never got lost. We are longtime fans of Oleana and expected some similarities. There are, but this place definitely has its own identity. It is informal and funky (in a carefully curated kind of way) and while the food shares many ingredients and influences, it is much more assertive (maybe even aggressive) in a good kind of way. cheese saganaki in shishito peppers, brussels sprouts bravas, calamari, spanakopita, harissa bbq duck, and braised lamb dumplings were fantastic. And the turkish coffee and frozen yogurt with sesame caramel were perfect at the end.
Took my college student out for dinner and enjoyed the best food I have had in the Boston area. The small plates were unique and full of flavor, loved the focus on vegetables with a bit of meat or fish. The wines by the glass were unusual and delicious. The room was vibrant and full of happy patrons. Service was stellar. We are going back again tonight!
This is hands-down the best meal I have had in Boston. It was the kind of dining experience, where it is difficult to choose which dish was the group's favorite because everything was exceptional in its flavor, complexity, and preparation. We were already looking for another reservation on our way back to our parking spot at the end of the night! The only downsides are that weekend dinner reservations require 1-2 months of lead time, and the service was average (it did not match the caliber of the food).
We visited Sarma for my birthday and it did not disappoint. The food on the menu was delicious and waiters brought around portions of the chef’s specials that you could add to your meal right then! The cocktails were great and the donuts for dessert were delicious.
I would definitely go back.
Having been to Oleana, I was expecting a similar level of service and food. Unfortunately, our server would not provide any recommendations, simply told us the menu changed so often that we just needed to read it and make choices. The food was good - and some dishes were very good - but overall didn't have the level of dining experience I expected. I would not go back again.
