Sargasso of Morgantown Restaurant & Bar Ratings and Reviews
They try to come off with food that is better than average, but they fail.
Waitstaff is good, ambiance is great, wine is reasonable priced, but the food is sub-par at best. The potato chips were cold and average, pork belly burnt and heavily spiced to mask the burnt taste. The potato soup was inedible, reeking of sage and also heavily spiced. The "prime strip steak was far from prime beef, choice at best, a heavy char at medium with no juices flowing at all. A huge disappointment.n They tr will give them that, but a total failure at any cusine you would want to experience again.
We had dined here about a year ago when we came up to WVU to visit our daughter for the weekend. We wanted to take her somewhere special that she wouldn't normally go to and I found Sargasso and was pleasantly surprised. We liked it so much we returned this year for her birthday. The atmosphere is very nice. The service was very good and the food was excellent. We all enjoyed our meals. There were a lot of good choices on the beer and wine lists. This is not the least expensive restaurant in the area but it's definitely worth it for a special night out.
I have eaten several times at Sargasso and have never been disappointed. My wife is vegetarian and can always get a great meal. Service is always top notch. They have a new menu which maintains the same high quality meals. If you are looking for fine dining in Morgantown, this is the place.
Exciting new menu and the food was outstanding. The Sea Bass and Vegetarian eggplant dish were delicious. My steak was cooked perfect and my husband enjoyed the porkchop. The new cocktail menu and the goat cheese appetizer was a hit. We had a great dinner and bonus there was live music.
Crisp and comfortable decor at a splendid riverside location help make this restaurant a hit. It's greatest draw, however, is one of the best and most value-conscious wine lists I have seen anywhere in the state. If I lived in Morgantown I'd be a regular for that reason alone. The list is compact in big city terms, but nicely covers the spectrum, from inexpensive but well chosen bottlings to serious but very fairly priced classified Bordeaux and other standouts.
The food was good, ordered the pork dish and my wife ordered the trout dish, with my only complaint of the clams appetizer being a bit to salty for my taste. The service was excellent and the noise level was good for our occasion. Prices were as expected in a nice dining establishment.
Meals created with a flair for sure! Chef Dave always accommodates my vegetarian husband with something delicious! Can't say enough about the staff and how friendly and knowledgeable they are. Extensive wine list, but plenty of modestly priced good wines. We have only lunched there a couple of times, and have not taken advantage of the wine tastings and special Chef meals, but love to go for dinner. The rooms are lovely and more on the romantic side, so good place to go for special occasions. Living in a college town presents a lot of fun and funky casual places to dine, but if you are a foodie looking for delicious and creatively prepared/presented dishes -- as well as a quieter more romantic setting -- this is the place to go!
My girl friend and I went to Sargasso's before prom. We were both amazed with Sargasso's, especially with the friendliness of the employees. They recognized our special occasion and treated us with a free, festive, non-alcoholic drink. We will definitely return for more special occasions and recommend to our friends!
We stopped in on a Wednesday and ordered from the "small plates" menu. The three dishes we ordered (Chicken wings in a Blueberry Fresno Chile BBQ glaze, Asado Tacos and the Steak Frites
4 oz Tenderloin with Peppercorn Cognac Sauce and Hand-Cut Fries) were beautifully prepared and delicious. Nice wine and beer list and attentive wait staff. Overall, it was a relaxed and enjoyable experience.
