Sapore Italiano Ratings and Reviews
Wonderfully prepared home made Italian entrees, attentive service and reasonable prices make Sapore Italiano something of an undiscovered treasure! In the world of "flashier Burlingame Avenue restaurants" Sapore can get a little lost but don't mistake "flash and a scene" for good food at reasonable prices!
We asked for the salad dressing to be put on the side, but the salad came dressed. The pasta was drenched in too much sauce and the pizza dough was very tough. Only the gnocchi was good. The service was attentive at the beginning, but servers were not available at the end of our meal. The noise level was deafening.
Reliably good Italian food and service. Nice people!
The noise level is uncomfortable in a full restaurant. It is time for some acoustical rescue for this restaurant before all the new competitors with nicer environments squeeze this aging place out.
I hate to see lack of a remodel to fix this longstanding spot make it go away.
My wife and I have been patrons of Sapore for a long time. The restaurant consistently has great Italian food at reasonable prices. For this outing, I had the veal marsala, superbly done, and my wife had the fish of the day, tasty and tender Grouper. My favorite desert is the semi-freddo.
I had been to Sapore Italiano once before for lunch and was impressed by the food. Our dinner the other night was also excellent. Our waiter was not the friendliest guy in the world, but because of the great food, I will not be deterred from going back again and again.
One entree came half way through the other two of us finishing - so much for going out to eat together on a weekend night. Manager blamed the cook - no offer made to make the situation right. Wine service was clumsy - did not follow proper wine advice etiquette. Server not suited for her job - delivered plates - blah attitude with no excitement about menu. Too bad - I always root for the local restaurant to succeed - not the case here.
This is the third time we have dined at Sapore and each time we have had a wonderful meal. The seating is cozy especially upstairs however it doesn't detract from the meal, which is the main attraction. The portions are correct and the presentations are simple, as it should be for an Italian dinner. All-in-all a good experience.
Service was extremely slow and inattentive. The environment was extremely loud and I had a very hard time communicating with my dinner partner who was sitting across from me. It was a struggle to get someone to refill our water, get to go boxes, or get the check. Dinner took just under two hours which was way longer than we expected to be there for one appetizers and two entrees. Worse yet, no one updated us on progress that things were delayed but still coming out. We tried to flag someone down to find out the status of our food but no one was paying any attention and walking around with their heads down.
We had an outstanding meal. The food was delicious. Our server was a lovely Italian girl from Naples. She seemed to be new. The service was slow. She took our orders for appetizers, but forgot one. Then she forgot to take our order for the main course. My husband and I weren't in a hurry, but it took 2 hours to get through the meal, and we didn't order dessert.
My expectation for service is to be welcomed at my reservation timely, but instead I felt more reprimanded. I had to wait 30 minutes for my reservation time. During that time, I tried to order 3 different bottles of wine at the bar from their quite short Italian wine menu. Each time, I waited 10 minutes while they went to the cellar, came back, and said they didn't have it. Obviously after 3 failed attempts I was frustrated and irritable. Once they seated us, things went better. I told them just to bring any wine bottle at that point, and their choice was acceptable. The menu here is quite simple and nothing really spectacular, but the food tasted good. It's what I would call simple Italian comfort food, and it's done well at that level.
