Sanctuary, with its chandeliers and vaguely gothic ambiance - protected by gargoyles like the sanctuaries of Europe - is elegant, yet comfortable. It is meant to be a haven where food, service and ambiance please the senses. A fireplace warms cold nights - a patio with flowers and herbs celebrates summer. With thick limestone, rough timbers and ceiling beams dating back to the 1860's, it reminds you of that small romantic place you'd love to visit again.
Sanctuary serves New American Cuisine, deftly combining immigrant influences from the Mediterranean to Japan into dishes that are delicious, amazing and satisfying. The menu stays enticing with weekday Tasting Menus, special creations Fri./Sat. and menu changes every other month. The StarTribune said, “[I] loved the well-paired wines, the genial service, the cozy surroundings and the kitchen's finesse."

Sanctuary Ratings and Reviews
A great way to end the work week is a meal at Sanctuary. Great food, service and conversation all in a relaxed atmosphere. These are the reasons Sanctuary remains in my top 5 favorite restaurants in Minneapolis. My wife and I always look forward to our next experience there.
The service was friendly and prompt, the ambience was warm and welcoming. The meat and cheese platter was delicious, but could have benefited from crostini or bread, the tres leches was delicious. For the main course, I had duck dish and was a bit disappointed, but my husband had the steak dish and loved it. All in all, a good meal and nice restaurant.
I’ve been to Sanctuary several times and appreciate the great food, presentation, and atmosphere. I came with a date on New Year’s Eve and was dissappointed in the loud pop music that was blasting from the speakers. I return to Sanctuary because it is one of the few venues in town where you can actually talk to your companions at dinner. I was also disappointed by the card on the table suggesting that we were only welcome to stay for an hour and a half to make room for additional customers. Although we were not rushed out the door, it still felt awkward especially considering that this is not an inexpensive dining choice.
The food and service has always been first rate and I am hoping that this was a one time lapse.
Food was wonderful. Service was very good My only recommendation is if ordering a meal, eg rack of lamb, and I say prepare to the chef preference to do that vs ask. I am accustomed to this at other high end restaurants and usually find that chefs know the best prep for the meat.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Sanctuary! Inventive cocktails (smoke on the water - SO moody), creatively refined dishes (tempura halibut, anyone?) and the service NEVER disappoints! Owner and bon vivant, Michael, provides a warm welcome and discreetly assures your every need is met. Great for pre and post theater but also great for long, leisurely meals with friends.
We hadn't been to Sanctuary in a couple of months and we have been missing out. Went for a Saturday night date with my wife and the food was phenomenal! The wife had steak which was cooked to a perfect medium rare and I had the duck which was unbelievably good. The service was great, the drinks were great and will be back soon.
We took our daughter and her boyfriend here attending A Christmas Carol at the Guthrie. It is my daughter's favorite choice for dining prior to attending the Guthrie. The host/owner? is a delight and we enjoyed the art work explanation b/f our absolutely spectacular dinner. The scallops did not disappoint and the lamb and beef were superb. My husband enjoys the wine list, although not extensive, there are wonderful choices. Our server was friendly, a delight and made us feel so welcome. She competently served our dinner so we were able to make the theater in plenty of time. Kudos to the wonderful chef. It was a superb evening.
We cane here with a larger group to celebrate a graduation and everything was absolutely wonderful from beginning to end! We were greeted by the owner of the restaurant who told us about it's history and discussed their original beverages while our table was being prepared. Service was on point, the food was exquisite, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. Thank you for a delightful evening!
We had wonderful service from Indica, who was attentive, knowledgeable and articulate, attending us and providing clear, descriptive answers to all our questions. I had the 5 course "Chef's Whim" sampler plus wine pairings, and was very impressed. My table mates were all satisfied with their choices as well. If you enjoy a cocktail before a meal, let me recommend the Elderberry Vesper Lynn. Everyone sampled it, and all were reluctant to pass it on. One caveat: Sanctuary has a very small parking lot, with an awkward, slow pay machine. On this icy, snowy night, we could not read our parking space numbers and had to climb a slippery slope to pay for our slots. The process was awkward, inconvenient and dangerous.
I dined with a friend who also was eating more plant based food. Our meal was outstanding and the bartender paired a delicious non-alcoholic beverage for my friend and a spot on cocktail for me. I have been dining at Sanctuary for some time now and have always had a wonderful meal.
We were welcomed by the host who escorted us back to the bar area rather than the main dining room, which seemed odd at the time. Although the environment was OK - just not what I was expecting based on reviews, we rolled with it and placed our order. Our server was awkward in sort of an annoying way - not terrible, simply lacked confidence it seemed. I believe the venue was terribly slow that evening and sent regular servers home, thus we ended up with the bar tender as our server. We were OK with our tasting menu items - good food, not great but plenty good value along with a value oriented wine flight. Was very "ho hum" overall and the worst part was listening the the "host" yack it up with two other guests at the end of the bar for over thirty minutes straight - which happened to be directly adjacent to our table. There were only two other tables "busy" the entire evening. Simply disappointing in so many ways.
