Sanctuary, with its chandeliers and vaguely gothic ambiance - protected by gargoyles like the sanctuaries of Europe - is elegant, yet comfortable. It is meant to be a haven where food, service and ambiance please the senses. A fireplace warms cold nights - a patio with flowers and herbs celebrates summer. With thick limestone, rough timbers and ceiling beams dating back to the 1860's, it reminds you of that small romantic place you'd love to visit again.
Sanctuary serves New American Cuisine, deftly combining immigrant influences from the Mediterranean to Japan into dishes that are delicious, amazing and satisfying. The menu stays enticing with weekday Tasting Menus, special creations Fri./Sat. and menu changes every other month. The StarTribune said, “[I] loved the well-paired wines, the genial service, the cozy surroundings and the kitchen's finesse."
Located one block from the Guthrie, it is the perfect place for dinner before or after a show.

Sanctuary Ratings and Reviews
Chloe was a wonderful waitress. Charming and helpful. Her meal suggestions were perfect and she helped to pick the perfect wine for the meal. Steaks were done to perfection and the brownies desert was excellent. The meat and cheese appetizer was excellent and my wife could not stop talking about how wonderful the micro greens were. Overall, one of out best anniversary dinner ever.
The owner, Mike, was friendly and welcoming. Excellent service, beautiful and intimate space, and the food was creative enough to be fun and interesting without going too far. We especially enjoyed the “sexy shots” dessert - really fun to share with a date!
Service was great and friendly, atmosphere was relaxing. I did not enjoy anything else. 4oz filet mignon was tough and under cooked, duck breast was over cooked, scallop was undercooked. Everything was fairly bland and under-seasoned, though, over-priced cosidering food quality. Tiny and cramped... skip it.
This was our first time to Sanctuary. We were very pleased. We were warmly welcomed at the door by the host and a glowing fireplace which was nice since it was a cold night outside. We has a reservation and were shown to a table of our choice and the server was prompt in getting to the table. Our server was very likeable and well versed on the menu and bar selections. The meal was wonderful and nicely timed as we began with a starter. Thanks to the Sanctuary staff for making the whole evening relaxing and memorable. We will be back.
A great way to end the work week is a meal at Sanctuary. Great food, service and conversation all in a relaxed atmosphere. These are the reasons Sanctuary remains in my top 5 favorite restaurants in Minneapolis. My wife and I always look forward to our next experience there.
The service was friendly and prompt, the ambience was warm and welcoming. The meat and cheese platter was delicious, but could have benefited from crostini or bread, the tres leches was delicious. For the main course, I had duck dish and was a bit disappointed, but my husband had the steak dish and loved it. All in all, a good meal and nice restaurant.
I’ve been to Sanctuary several times and appreciate the great food, presentation, and atmosphere. I came with a date on New Year’s Eve and was dissappointed in the loud pop music that was blasting from the speakers. I return to Sanctuary because it is one of the few venues in town where you can actually talk to your companions at dinner. I was also disappointed by the card on the table suggesting that we were only welcome to stay for an hour and a half to make room for additional customers. Although we were not rushed out the door, it still felt awkward especially considering that this is not an inexpensive dining choice.
The food and service has always been first rate and I am hoping that this was a one time lapse.
Food was wonderful. Service was very good My only recommendation is if ordering a meal, eg rack of lamb, and I say prepare to the chef preference to do that vs ask. I am accustomed to this at other high end restaurants and usually find that chefs know the best prep for the meat.
