Sanctuary, with its chandeliers and vaguely gothic ambiance - protected by gargoyles like the sanctuaries of Europe - is elegant, yet comfortable. It is meant to be a haven where food, service and ambiance please the senses. A fireplace warms cold nights - a patio with flowers and herbs celebrates summer. With thick limestone, rough timbers and ceiling beams dating back to the 1860's, it reminds you of that small romantic place you'd love to visit again.
Sanctuary serves New American Cuisine, deftly combining immigrant influences from the Mediterranean to Japan into dishes that are delicious, amazing and satisfying. The menu stays enticing with weekday Tasting Menus, special creations Fri./Sat. and menu changes every other month. The StarTribune said, “[I] loved the well-paired wines, the genial service, the cozy surroundings and the kitchen's finesse."

Sanctuary Ratings and Reviews
We had wonderful service from Indica, who was attentive, knowledgeable and articulate, attending us and providing clear, descriptive answers to all our questions. I had the 5 course "Chef's Whim" sampler plus wine pairings, and was very impressed. My table mates were all satisfied with their choices as well. If you enjoy a cocktail before a meal, let me recommend the Elderberry Vesper Lynn. Everyone sampled it, and all were reluctant to pass it on. One caveat: Sanctuary has a very small parking lot, with an awkward, slow pay machine. On this icy, snowy night, we could not read our parking space numbers and had to climb a slippery slope to pay for our slots. The process was awkward, inconvenient and dangerous.
I dined with a friend who also was eating more plant based food. Our meal was outstanding and the bartender paired a delicious non-alcoholic beverage for my friend and a spot on cocktail for me. I have been dining at Sanctuary for some time now and have always had a wonderful meal.
We were welcomed by the host who escorted us back to the bar area rather than the main dining room, which seemed odd at the time. Although the environment was OK - just not what I was expecting based on reviews, we rolled with it and placed our order. Our server was awkward in sort of an annoying way - not terrible, simply lacked confidence it seemed. I believe the venue was terribly slow that evening and sent regular servers home, thus we ended up with the bar tender as our server. We were OK with our tasting menu items - good food, not great but plenty good value along with a value oriented wine flight. Was very "ho hum" overall and the worst part was listening the the "host" yack it up with two other guests at the end of the bar for over thirty minutes straight - which happened to be directly adjacent to our table. There were only two other tables "busy" the entire evening. Simply disappointing in so many ways.
Tasty & creative meal before Guthrie Theater on a snowy Friday eve. Warm & cozy restaurant with super-fresh seasonal ingredients and a welcoming host/owner and staff. Tuna tartare app was a fabulous blend of marinated tuna chunks & spicy chocolate sauce with edible flower garnish. Risotto with radish sprouts, oyster mushrooms & lemon ricotta was flavorful, filling comfort food. The duck was meaty, well-seasoned and tender. The tres leches cake was sweet and moist and plenty to share. Well done Sanctuary. We’ll be back!
Many of us heard through Facebook about the recent departure of Chef Patrick. I'm here to say that any concerns we might have had were quickly dismissed after last night's dinner. The chef who was the chef at Sanctuary prior to Pat is back... and the food is still excellent. I'm not going to relay our dinner, as a new menu starts tonight. Let's just say the kitchen is in excellent hands and Sanctuary is alive and well.
This was our first visit after reading great reviews about Sanctuary. We were impressed with the facility, the ambiance and that they honored the type of table I requested on Open Table. We both ordered the 5-course chef’s selection and were impressed with each course. Our lobster-corn soup was amazing, the salad delicious, pork tenderloin and potatoes were spectacular and our favorite was the single, perfect scallop with a slightly spicy assortment of root vegetables and broth. The desert was beautiful but we only tasted as we were quite full at that point. We enjoyed this meal with the recommended wine pairing. This was not only a very reasonable price but each of the wine selections perfectly complemented the course it was paired with. For example I generally don’t care for Chardonnay, but it was perfect with the scallop dish.
Next time we will probably request a cozy table in the bar area simply to get a different perspective of the space. Parking is convenient and inexpensive for downtown. We will definitely go back for the atmosphere and the fantastic food, and are told the chef changes up the tasting menu every day.
Another beautifully prepared and served delicious meal at Sanctuary. Love the almonds and bread with edamame to start, and both the pork and scallop entrees were just superb. We recommend this restaurant for casual, special, groups, couples, and occasion. We have always had a 5 star experience at Sanctuary.
Solid food! Had the prix fixed with wine pairings and was very satisfied, well developed flavors, pairings were perfect, typically a red wine drinker but enjoyed the variety of drinks given and they really worked well with the food! Solid food I would come back for!
