Sanctuary serves New American Cuisine, deftly combining immigrant influences from the Mediterranean to Japan into dishes that are delicious, amazing and satisfying. The menu stays enticing with weekday Tasting Menus, special creations Fri./Sat. and menu changes every other month. The StarTribune said, “[I] loved the well-paired wines, the genial service, the cozy surroundings and the kitchen's finesse."
Located one block from the Guthrie, it is the perfect place for dinner before or after a show.
Sanctuary Resturant week menu was good - but I would not say it was great. I have had many great meals there and find the tasting menu to be an excellent value and enjoyable. The wine pairings with this meal were absolutely spot on and a GREAT value. This is a lovely restaurant run by lovely people and a fabulous date night destination or enjoyable with friends.
Amazingly excellent food at a decent price. The chef made tailored accomodations to the 5-course tasting menu for my complex allergies so that every dish looked just like my husband’s, was yummy and unforgettable, and a total treat. We plan to come back again and again. One caution: for a date, avoid bar area; it’s a bit noisy and not as warm feeling.
As usual, the service and food at Sanctuary were superb. Our waitress carefully explained the tasting menu which my friend tried and liked very much. Steaks were done perfectly. We'll come again!
Service was slower than I’d expect given the amount of folks in the restaurant. Otherwise the food was great.
Great again as usual, Mike and crew do exceptional job. Good food one of our favorite restaurants
Near Guthrie and Target field. Parking on either side of the building is cheap and available (best kept secret?). We got 2 vegetarian side dishes and the artichoke tartlet—all filling and tasty. The whole place was going to the Guthrie dhow and they had us out the door in an hour.
Intimate restaurant with delicious food. Felt like we stepped back in time. Very romantic and cozy atmosphere. We recommend Sanctuary.
Appetizers were fabulous...main courses were fine. Loved the tart for dessert.
Try the grilled Alaskan halibut over olive risotto! Amazing! We will be back to try their tasting menu.
This was a wonderful discovery by chance and very glad that it happened. Sanctuary is a relaxed and intimate place to have dinner. Upon the moment of entry you are greeted with a cordial welcome. The staff is the very best in Minneapolis. The food and drinks were exceptional. The steak was tender and the halibut moist. Sanctuary leaves you with nothing to complain about.
The menu is narrow, but all of the various entree’s were solid with good flavor. The portions were reasonably sized and fairly priced. The service didn’t always come of as impressive, but the service was still good and we never seemed to be waiting for anything. We would certainly go there again.
We are visiting Minneapolis and tried Sanctuary on the recommendation of a friend. We loved it. It was easy to get a reservation. We were greeted warmly when we arrived. Our table for 4 was private. Loved the giant chairs. Our server was friendly and helpful with the menu. The fully stocked bar had lots to offer. The food was interesting and different from typical restaurant fare and was delicious.
We were greeted by the owner right when we walked in, and sat down a a quaint, “romantic” table. We ordered our drinks first, then food 10 min later. 20 min later, we were told there was a mixup in the kitchen and the server apologized it would be delayed. Half an hour later, I was told they were out of the entree I ordered (halibut). There was no apology nor explanation for why it took 50 min to even inform me, but whatever. It took over an entire hour for us to get our appetizer, then at least half an hour after to get our entrees. While the waitress (Jennifer I think?) apologized, she only mentioned comping our appetizer and drink AFTER I had pulled her aside explaining our frustration. If I were her, I would’ve apologized properly and mentioned right away (without being prompted by the customer) that I’ll comp part of the dinner.
The food was good, the ambiance was nice, but unfortunately, my boyfriend and I will not return.
Food, service and atmosphere all nice. My group was from out of town and had trouble getting there with all the construction but felt it was worth the trip.
Lovely ambiance, host was very attentive, service was great, food was delicious!
I generally bring my out-of-town clients here, in part because after eating here once, they request return visits. Highly recommended!
Food is good but not Great for the pricing. Chef entrees need more variation and depth of flavor and a few more options of salads and entrees. They have the air of great possibility but it's not being developed well enough for me to say that there are top-notch and worth coming very often. I am glad that they cycle there menus as they told me that probably is what is helpful for me to want to return
Sanctuary is my go-to when family/friends are visiting!
We eat regularly at Sanctuary. Always creative and interesting meals. The best service in town!
Perfectly seasoned and cooked. Unusual ingredients but skillfully assembled. We did tasting menu with wine paring. High point was the pastry chef’s perfectly executed brownie and vanilla ice cream. Sounds simple but executed at a 10 level
Fantastic cocktails, amazing appetizers and a great main course. Service was spot on. We will be back!
I love the ambiance at the Sanctuary. I had a wonderful Halibut dish and super service with Jong
Fantastic as usual best weekday value in town, leave full after eating beautiful tasty food from a tasting menu and buzzed to boot with cocktail pairing! Last night’s entree, a beautiful mackerel with a ginger broth and roasted cherry tomatoes and mushrooms was very well done I wanted to lick my bowl!
The food is always outstanding. Knowledgable and friendly service. Beautiful outdoor patio space on a gorgeous summer evening. Frequent menu changes keep things fresh and new
We love Sanctuary! It's a hidden jewel with amazing food and cozy/ fun interior. Service is superb and food creative and always a hit.
I odered the eggplant involtini and we had fingerling potatoes for the table. Both were extremely difficult to eat and serve. The waitress did not bring extra plates for the table and with only an appetizer fork for the potatoes, it was impossible to serve up the bacon bits and scallions with the potatoes. The eggplant dish was so frustrating to cut and eat that even though the taste was lovely, it was hard to enjoy.
Is this a recent opening? Lots of rookie mistakes that maybe will get sorted out in time.
Lovely experience all around — from greeting to departure. Great service, excellent food with excellent wine suggestions, and fabulous service.
What a wonderful spot to meet up with friends! The waitress was a delight. The menu was diverse without being overwhelming. I wish we lived closer as I would love to come back and graze on the appetizers!
Great food. Great service. Totally enjoyable night out.
We adore Sanctuary. Lovely space, delicious food, warm staff
Sanctuary could be perfect so close to the Guthrie with outdoor seating. My mojito came without real mint, my husband’s question about the rotating beer turned into a beer order he didn’t know what type of beer it was. The drinks were slow to arrive but the salads and food were rushed. The bread was delicious! Our dinners were fine but it wasn’t worth it given the overall experience. Second time of paying too much for a so-so experience. We aren’t going back. 😕
We sat on the patio, which was very nice. Our waitress was outstanding and our food very good. Our only disappointment was that there weren’t more diners
We always enjoy our meals at Sanctuary -
Over the years the ownership and chef has mutated.
But the food and ambiance has remained true to the original concept - a Sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of life. With good food and drink.
My wife and I enjoy the testing menu, which is 5 courses of smaller portions which is perfect to introduce you to different menu and off menu items.
We went on a Monday night which is a quieter day of the week - so not a ton of patrons - and there for it was quiet.
Michael the owner, host greets almost everyone and circles the room assisting where needed - and talking to customers.
I loved my food but my husband did not. His steak was quite chewy and just not good. The restaurant did comp it after he mentioned it so that is nice!
This place is great. Every time we are in town we have to stop at Sanctuary. The friendliness of the staff, the great drinks and the food is phenomenal.
I feel like this place is a hidden gem. It is easy to miss in the cacophony of buildings, signage and new construction. The food, service and ambiance is top flight. It is pricey, but well worth the price! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great dining experience.
My wife and I were planning a theater night and wanted to find a location nearby. Sanctuary had good reviews so we thought we'd try it out. It turned out to be a great choice! The food was terrific and so was the service. We would highly recommend Sanctuary to you and we plan to return there soon.
We were disappointed in our experience with this restaurant. We had theatre tickets at the Guthrie and informed the waitress and manager when we arrived at 6 PM.
They informed us they were out of shrimp, so those entries were not available. We wanted to order the Cod but were concerned after they informed us their fish delivery was only weekly, not daily.
Our food did not arrive until 7 PM after finally tracking down the manager. We found the duck dish to be not satisfactory and the lobster/steak dish to be tough to chew. The artichoke and scallops, though were quite good.
The Manager made an adjustment to our bill, but by then our dinner experience left a bad taste in our mouth.
