We used to go to this restaurant every time we visited Livermore. This was our favorite place for food, drinks and atmosphere. We were very disappointed the last two visits for the following reasons:
1. I brought my Wife here for a milestone birthday and the waitress was not friendly. When we asked for two menu items, they were not prepared by the kitchen and we had to wait 30 minutes. When I asked for a desert for her birthday, the waitress said they had nothing to offer.
2. The food used to be exceptional, but seems to be diminishing in quality.
3. On the other non-birthday occasion (date night), we waited way too long for our drinks . The waitress was friendly, but seem to be more interested in socializing with her friends at the bar.
Wonderful evening. Vironica and I had the best time. Good wine, great service and the food was fantastic. Had the seared Ahi and was one of the best I have had. Desserts are always the best. You won't be disappointed.
They need to be more clear about gluten free options
Our first time visit here. We were celebrating a friend's birthday on Saturday night. We expected a classy lounge given the name, but it was definitely more of a sports bar with large TVs all over the place. Similar to a miniature BJ's. There is a back room that became a dance club at 10 pm. It was very small and extremely crowded. For food, we ordered appetizers. The sliders and nacho fries were good, but the calamari was just okay. There was an extensive drink menu which was nice, and our waitress was excellent. However, it should be renamed Sanctuary BAR and Restaurant. Definitely did not have a lounge vibe!
We had a reservation for Valentines night dinner. We really didn't need one because when we arrived for our 7:15 reservation there were plenty of tables available and were told that we could sit anywhere we wanted. We sat at a 2 person high booth (which the table cloth obviously had not been wiped down from the previous diners). The hostess said she's be right back to clean it off. She never returned. We sat waiting and waiting and waiting for someone to take our drink order. As we waited I looked around and noticed 80% of other diners were just waiting as well. We finally had a waiter come by. We ordered two glasses of wine which took at least 10 minutes to get. We then placed our appetizer/entree order. While we were waiting for our order I saw at least two couples come in and then change their mind and leave. The food was so-so. The ambiance was weird. Yelp said it was a romantic dinner spot but it was more like a bar trying to be a restaurant and not succeeding at either. We won't be returning. Not when Livermore has many other restaurants to offer.
First time here. The ambiance is that of a sport bar, not my favorite, but They have outdoor seating in the front with a couple of fire pit tables. We were able to sit at one of these tables. It was a buitiful night and the ambiance outside was wonderful. The food was great and the wait staff was attentive and friendly, which added to our positive experiance. We chose from the Tapas menu and was not disappointed. The food was very very tasty. We ordered the sliders, Joey's shrimp bruschetta, Ahi, and oysters. For dessert we had the Cheese Cake Xango....Loved it. Every dish was delisious. We were not disappointed. We will be back for sure
Dined at Sanctuary because I LOVE their posole. Posole was wonderful as usual. Everything else that night was a disappointment. Service was very slow while I watched the staff talk among themselves. Asked if they had wifi, was told someone would come over and give me the info, that never happened. Ordered the sliders, the jalapeno peppers included the seeds and was so spicy we could not eat them, even after we removed the peppers. Might have to find somewhere else for posole :(
Party was fun, buffet was just ok. Go somewhere else if you are looking for an amazing meal, come here after for drinks and dancing. Service was excellent, our waitress Stephanie was wonderful, despite the very busy evening. The wine that came with the buffet was good, but the food was the same as you'd find anywhere, standard salad, steak, chicken, potatoes etc.
Great food, just really loud and our waitress left us part way through
Served local wine which was good. Several tv's were on, with football games. Definitely a sports bar.
We had dinner here before seeing a movie with friends. We were a bit early so our table wasn't ready but the host moved some tables around and we were seated right away. Service was prompt and the food was great. We had salmon with rice and a big salad that came with the meal. They have a special if you join their text "club" you get one $2 well drink. happy hour prices were also good at $5 for special cocktails. the happy hour appetizers were also $5 but extremely small and more one person appetizer. Fun place to go before or after the movies!
Great food, atmosphere in the downtown Livermore area. Outdoor dining is great, right on main street. Food is excellent , great wine selection and IPA Beers.
I took my mom in here for a Mother's Day lunch. I was definitely let down. This place is just, "ok." Prices are decent. Food is ok. Nothing special. The part that got me was that it wasn't busy and it took 30 minutes to get our coconut shrimp appetizer. I took 2 bites (because there wasn't much in there to begin with) and all of the sudden my main dish came. They didn't bring my mom's with it either. That came a few minutes later. Honestly, grab drinks. Skip the food. That's my recommendation.
I stopped in to say hello to a friend and have a glass of wine. We we're there for two hours sitting in the outdoor area. Was a beautiful day friendly service top-notch wine. made reservations for dinner that same evening and came back with five more friends. Will definitely visit the sanctuary when I am in town again!
This was a third or fourth visit to Sanctuary and have not to be disappointed. Was a special occasion with one that I hope to soon be a couple. The food was perfect and the tacos, oh yeah ! Great selection of food and appetizers, along with a great wine selection. Staff was courteous and spot on.
What a pleasant surprise. The food at Sanctuary was VERY GOOD. I had the pork tacos and my guest had the burger with a fried egg. We both added the side salad and still our meals were under $10/each. What a fantastic bargain. (btw...my sangria was delicious) I will definitely have to go back with my husband. I actually brought home one of the 3 tacos for my husband and he loved it!! Love it when we find a neighborhood gem.
It was cramped, loud, and reservations still gave me less than poor seating. The food was not very good. I would rather have drinks and tapas as Coco Cobana. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
The food and service were great. I especially enjoyed the tacos
We were expecting more of a lounge vibe, it was more like a sports bar for dinner. Very loud, and many TVs on. Atmosphere definitely does not match up with dinner pricing. No zen like feel. Open bar tables and lowtops for dinner service mixed in with Club like booth seating. Food was good but service was very spotty. The same mixed drink came served in different size glasses each round, although they were the same price. The
Went here for a girls day out. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the fire pit table. Service was great! Food was delicious. It was a little pricey. I think if the prices were more reasonable, it would be busier. Overall, we had a great time and will definitely be back.
I brought my family here for an early dinner. We started with drinks and an appetizer that came out nice. Then we waited about an hour for our food to arrive after we order, which was ok since we were enjoying our drinks and the server was very accommodating. However, when the food finally did arrive all four entrees seem to be burnt or cook so much it appeared dry to the taste. (We ordered the tri-tip sandwich, a burger, and two orders of the tri-tip skewers, all of which were tough to get down.) Yes, we were disappointed but did not tell the server since she was so busy we didn't really see her for the remainder of the evening until the check came late. The bar crowd had begun to arrive and we understood it was probably our cue to leave.
Sanctuary is a friendly, contemporary wine/food venue with great service. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable with a very nice selection of wines and food from appetizers to entrees to dessert. The music has a lovely finish to the ambiance and is just the right level to dine, talk and enjoy. Cheers!
Went here with a group of friends on a Friday night. It was pretty quiet early in the evening and can accommodate group seating more easily then. Later at night, after 8 PM, you'll be fighting for a table, so reservations definitely recommended. After 9 PM it gets pretty crowded since they have music and the crowd gets progressively younger. The food offering isn't huge but reasonable though a little mediocre. The focus is on the drinks and atmosphere. The patio isn't huge but if you can grab a table, it can be an awesome place to hang out.
That's it. The server was very friendly but we had to get up and get someone to help us twice, once for salt and pepper for fries and once to see if we could change tables (it wasn't busy ). My husband thought the food was great, I thought it was so so. I would go back for a late nite out drink and snack.
was really looking forward to trying Sanctuary for dinner, had small plates only in the past. The menu was limited. The pasta was really over cooked, but a good size portion unfortunately. My wife had the beef kabobs, those to were over cooked. No one in our party of 7 really raved about any of their choices. Service was slow and very not very energetic. First lousy experience so I'll probably try one more time.
I wasn't sure what to expect from a 21 and older restaurant in Downtown Livermore but it was perfect. Not too loud, no obnoxious people, great wine, and fantastic food. My friend and I went for a girl's night and the chicken pene pesto pasta was delicious. Most definitely will be returning.
My friends and I seek out informal restaurants with great food for dinner and quiet enough to have good conversations. A friend recommended The Sanctuary, but it all sounded wrong--to me the name suggests a dark grotto with cobwebs, and she said it was a sports bar with tvs on the walls, but it was quiet. But we took her suggestion, ready to back out when we walked in the door if it didn't feel right. We were quite amazed! It was bright and cheery and quiet, the menu was imaginative and the food outstanding, even excellent desserts--in a sports bar? The service was also outstanding. We all agreed we wanted to come back.
I like their range of food. You can get light appetizers, salads, fish, or burgers. I also enjoy their drink menu. This place is good for lunch or dinner and turns into a lounge with music on the weekends. I like the diversity of this place. You can sit at the bar, on the couches, at bar tables, or even outside.
I fell in love with this place a couple years ago when I tried their Autumn Chicken. They incorporated butternut squash (which I love). Not sure I have seen it on the menu since but I always find something I like.
We made a reservation yet were seated at a couch with a coffee table. We were willing to overlook it and be switched to a table. We were there to have dinner and there were a few tables inside as well as on the patio. The waitress responded with some attitude as if it would be very difficult to make space for us. After 20 min we asked for the check for our drinks. Only then did they begin to say we could have one of the empty tables. We said we were fine and would like to leave. The waitress, after we asked for the check walked to the bar and began talking to the bar tender. She pointed at our table and he looked over. He continued to stare at us off and for the next 25 mins. It was the most unpleasant experience. Never again!
Nice atmosphere, but no place to hang a coat, as the chairs are barstools.
I guess I was a little disappointed with this restaurant because I was expecting a "nicer" place to celebrate our anniversary. As it turned out, the place is pretty casual. The food was good enough. My husband really liked his blue cheese mushroom hamburger. I ordered the mushroom ravioli, which were pretty good as well. The single glass of wine I had was a bit on the stingy side. The best part of the evening was the dessert - a crispy deep-fried shell filled with cheesecake and then rolled in cinnamon sugar. Yum. Overall, I would try this place again, but maybe for lunch or late night.
Downtown Livermore is such a treat. With so many places to choose from, if
a restaurant doesn't have good food it certainly won't last.
After 35 minutes of concerted inattention we just had to walk out and find someplace where we could be acknowledged. One star for food really is NA since we were unable to submit an order. Pathetic.
