About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for business meals
  • Innovative
Turn the corner from Cross Street and find this striking and iconic red-brick building which dates back to 1872 and promises good food, good beer, and a great atmosphere. Sam's has a history which spans a staggering three centuries… and we've managed to retain a large part of that history inside.
The cuisine mirrors our heritage, with classic British dishes such as mouth-watering corned beef hash cake, or homemade steak and kidney pudding made with fresh lamb's kidneys. Other dishes have been given a modern twist, hence the comparison to Mrs Beeton for the 21st Century, try our roasted pork fillet, served with purple sprouting broccoli, a sweet apple grain mustard purée & a savoury pig jowl hash brown.
Fine wines are one of the things which set Sam's and our other chop houses apart. The wine list has been judged Manchester's best in many of the city's Food & Drink festivals of the last decade. Compiled and constantly updated by our wine buyer and sommelier George Bergier.

A recent addition to the bar is a life-sized bronze statue of the famous Northern artist L.S. Lowry, who was a regular. He sits quietly, propping up the bar in the spot favoured by the man himself, casting a watchful eye over the customers who come through the door. He has been quite the celebrity, being photographed constantly and yet remaining unfazed by all the attention. Come and take a picture with him – he won"t mind! Lowry's presence has put Sam's firmly on the map as the quintessentially British restaurant in Manchester and is a constant reminder of the history behind the chop houses.

Really nice atmophere, busy (was a Friday night, so not suprised there!), love the surroundings & the decor. The food was just amazing - pork belly literally melted in the mouth, and the white chocolate cheesecake with honeycomb.... awesome! Everything arrived beautifully prepared and nicely presented. We both enjoyed our meals and left with empty plates and full bellies! All made a bit sweeter by the amazing 50% off voucher we had! Service was a little slow when it came to ordering drinks, but it was a busy Friday night, have to make allowances. Only slight criticism would be on members of the team with facial piercings serving food - I don't think there's anything 'health & safety-wise' about it, I just don't like it, personal thing.

This was our second visit to Sam's Chop House in a week! We used to visit regularly many years ago when working in Manchester. Pleased to see that the food and service remain of consistently high quality. There is a good selection of wines and real ales. On this occasion "Black Sheep" ale was not on tap but the recommended replacement "Rev James" was a fine substitute. It is clear that the food is prepared using the finest and fresh ingredients and the portions are not for those who have tiny appetites!

I had lunch last week at Sam's with my son.Our intention was to go just for mains but when we saw the menu we quickly changed our minds to have starters, mains and puds all of which were excellent .I wanted to change one of the veg on my main and the waiter was very accommodating.Service was attentive but not overbearing and the beer as always was great.Ambiance is warm and welcoming and all the staff are knowledgeable.I'd strongly recommend Sam's for food, beer and wine any time of the day.

I visited this place with two other people and was seated straight away after booking a table. It was so noisy you couldnt even talk amongst yourselves. The service was very slow. We sat there for around 20 mins before a staff member came to take our order. Once we ordered it took 40mins for the starters to arrive and when it did the pate was that cold it was like it just came out of the freezer and didn't have time to defrost. My boyfriend ordered a goat's cheese tart with a "walnut salad".... Three rocket leaves and a few nuts lashed on the plate next to a very tiny tart. Very poor. The mains on the other hand were very nice, but again took too long to arrive. Then it came to the bill part.....compulsory 10% service charge was added, which I didn't like as I thought the service was bad. Fair enough if there was a group of 8 or more but there was three of us. Then they brought it in a wallet with the American Express logo on it, but didn't accept American express as a payment (why advertise the logo if you don't accept them) I wouldn't come again. Far better restaurants around with better service which is also quieter. The Amount we paid for the meal you could of paid the same elsewhere and got better service and chose to leave a tip if you wanted to not forced to.

Me and my boyfriend came here for the first time on New Year's Eve and the food was perfect, honestly the best meal I've ever eaten. Couldn't have asked for anything better.

We had a late lunch with friends during the festive season. It was such a lovely occasion with no pressure to move on so we could just enjoy the food and the ambience and of course the company. The food was lovely although the wine was a little expensive but hey its Christmas.

Arrived well before our booked time, and, despite the fact that the restaurant was very busy with Christmas parties, were quickly accommodated. The staff were attentive, given the demands of the other diners. Our order was taken in a timely manner and the food arrived without too long of a wait. Dessert and dessert wines were served without much delay after the main meal. Given that we chose to eat during the "after work Christmas office party" period, we were very satisfied with the service and food, and look forward to returning at a quieter time of year!!
