Sam's Anchor Cafe Ratings and Reviews
Fantastic location and fantastic food! My wife used to come here when she lived in San Francisco over 20 years ago and wanted the Crab Louie salad. It was still on the menu! Crab cakes were delicious, service was super friendly and perfect location for catching up with friends and their kids. The weather was glorious and the views from the deck were awesome. Will certainly return the next time we're in San Francisco!
Our service was horrible. The server wasn't rude or anything, it just took us forever to get anything. Some things just never came out at all - I had to go up to the kitchen area to bring back bottles of ketchup, malt vinegar, forks and knives, water, etc. It was just all really bad, and the food had clearly been sitting for a long time - we just didn't have time to wait for another option.
We arrived early and were happily seated immediately. Service was prompt and attentive. The menu is mostly classics, but they are done very well. And the chef went out of his way to accommodate my dietary restrictions, which is rarer than it ought to be. The cocktails were good, but, again, not inventive. The setting is so charming and the day was beautiful so the view of the Bay was a knockout. I'd recommend this spot anytime and will be back again myself.
Bring your sunglasses and a hat if you sit outside for brunch. Service was ok. Had to ask twice for a couple of things. My girlfriends plate had a hair on it that wasn't hers...at least they took that off the bill. Still came to $170 for 4 adults 1 child. $200 with the tip.
I came in for my birthday this past Saturday and made a reservation for 2. The host seated us and gave us menus. After 10 minutes passed without anyone checking on us or even taking our drink order, we walked out and had a much better evening elsewhere.
Food and Value ratings are N/A as we didn't stay.
We love this place BUT, we have been to Sam's five times in the past several months and the service is atrocious. Even when they are not busy. I don't get it. It ruins what otherwise would be a good experience. More specifically, it takes forever for the cooks to get the food out to the table.
I ordered the huevos rancheros for Sunday brunch and they wanted to scramble the eggs. No, it should be over easy. It was only one egg and a small plate for about $14, so I didn't think it was worth it. Also, I paid an extra $2 to add avocado (so the bill for my dish was approx $16) and the avocado was only a sliver (about 1/8th the size of the avocado). Save your money and go elsewhere!
After touring the Marin headlands, and Fort Baker, a friend and I had a wonderful lunch here. The trout bites for an appetizer were AMAZING, and the lobster roll was all I'd hoped for. Paired with a couple bloody marys, and a great seat outside, it was so much fun. Always enjoy it!
Good value on the menu, and beautiful location. The Menu though did not have many interesting items - ie the Eggs Benedict had Salmon Roe....
Ended up eating a hamburger and WAY over salted potato chips.
A little disappointing, but the ambiance was worth it.
I have been to Sam's many times before. You go for the outside seating and atmosphere mostly!
On this occasion, everything was fine. The waitstaff seemed to be a bit frazzled and brought over 3 salads when we ordered two. It didn't occur to me that once we got the bill and paid for it ( which totaled $79 for 2 salads, two drinks, bread) that we were overcharged. Since we split the bill and were chatting away- didn't know until it was too late!!! So when you go on a busy Sunday- CHECK YOUR BILL!!
Sam's patio on a sunny day is hard to beat for relaxed friendly ambiance. I wish they served espresso drinks (hence the 4 stars) but the yogurt with fruit and granola was just perfect for brunch--delicious fruit, just the right amount of yogurt, and scrumptious granola--and the service is always friendly and knowledgeable.
Delicious and fun place to celebrate our twins' 24th birthday. Nice view, good service and very yummy meals. The noise level, however, was ear-shattering, and our party of 5 had to shout to be heard across the round table. Would be a good idea to put in some sort of sound absorber on the ceiling, perhaps. But even with the noise, that wouldn't keep us from going there again because it was so good.
Great restaurant with good food. A little pricey, but maybe it's to be expected given where it's located. Reservations made in advance will only seat you inside, so if you want to sit on the patio outside, you'll have to put your name in when you get there and maybe wait a little.
The service was very poor. We were seated on the deck for dinner and sat for at least 10 mins with no one to offer us water or any kind of service. My husband went to the outdoor bar to get us drinks. When we left without any dinner, I went into the ladies restroom and it was so bad! It was so messy with toilet paper all over the floor and trash over spilling onto the floor. I told the waitstaff when I left but, I would say they did seem to care.
I would say they have a great deck for drinking.
Haven't been there in over 30 years so we were looking forward to it; a bit of nostalgia. Service was OK. Had to ask for bread separately. Food was OK, nothing to rave about. Served us cold stale coffee, when we complained they corrected and gave us fresh cups but we had to ask for cream which took another trip by the waiter. Price was not bad but a bit high for the food quality and the portions. I wouldn't order the tomato soup again, tasted like it came from a can, no character. Salads were nothing special at all. Crabcakes were good but not great. Contained plenty of crab but portion was small. Maybe its always been this way and my memory is bad, was disappointed but I'd try it one more time and be more careful about what we ordered.
What a great place! Our large group returned from Angel Island to have lunch at Sam's. We were greeted with smiling faces from the hostess and staff. The service was excellent because the servers knew their menu, could make suggestions, and didn't get our drink orders wrong. The food selection is great. Order the garlic bread--So delicious with the cheese!! Eat it alone or with a meal, but order it. I have to praise the manger because earlier that day I had to make a change to our reservation and Julie was more than happy to accommodate my frantic situation. Sam's Anchor Cafe made for a great finish to a great day.
What a great place to cap off our day to Angel Island. The waiter was great in taking orders from over 30 of us. I noticed when the food came...it came out to all of us within a few minutes leaving none of us sitting there waiting for our food.
The food is so comforting good. Everything everyone had was great.
Always a fave, I love this place! Really worth noting that when you book online, you are booking an indoor table. They don't take reservations for the outdoor deck seating. Worth getting there early, put your name down, and sit in their lovely bar and have a drink while you wait for an outdoor table!
