We waited 45 minutes to be seated tonight and it was honestly an awful experience. Another group who was 25 minutes late for their reservation were seated before us even though we were 10 minutes early for ours. After 35 minutes the manager promised us free appetizers for our wait but we received nothing. If we hadn’t been told that we were being compensated we wouldn’t have thought anything of it but it made an already annoying situation worse. Very disappointing. I’ll stick to happy hour.
We waited thirty minutes for our table and they gave us two free small plates. You decide if two edamame dumplings is worth that kinda crap.
Great place with a great ambiance. It was my boyfriends 21st birthday, and they brought complimentary ice cream. Great time.
Very enjoyable, will continue to come back!
Excellent food; great recommendations from server on what to get from the tasting menu. Only negative was the noise level. Music was too loud; could not hear what was being served to us by the staff. Softer music would be better.
Great restaurant with amazing food. Everything we got was delicious and the prices are very reasonable. Definitely recommend.
Went for my birthday , food was good but our waitress was terrible . Didn’t refill our drinks , forgot menus and didn’t take off food we never even ate or received . This was my second time in and it was nice but the service would make me second guess coming again .
The menu was unique and everything was delicious!
Sever was weeded, but it was pretty busy. Overall he was really nice though!
Called to say that I’d be late, had friends check in beforehand...hostess was a little standoff ish. Wouldn’t partially seat my party on account that I wasn’t present, so we had to awkwardly wait in a busy doorway.
I’m assuming who is the GM did come around and ask how everything was, which is nice.
Amazing food and Ryan, our server, was fantastic. We ate a little bit of everything and it was all excellent.
I’ve been to Sampan twice and unfortunately my experience on both occasions were underwhelming. Quality food but overrated and overpriced.
Amazinnng! Love going there and the cheesecake was so good I got it twice. Prices are awesome and food pretty good.
Interesting and sophisticated plates featuring Asian flavors with a dynamic flair.
Sampan never fails to impress. The menu of small plates, ranging from classic pot stickers to swordfish satay and everything in between have a modern feel, yet have a traditional Asian taste. Be aware, the lighting is minimal and the sound can get a bit loud. Must try the edamame dumplings (with a touch of soy sauce) and smashed cucumber salad (perfect palate refresher)! Also, the location cannot be topped. Sampan is surrounded by other great restaurants and bars so you can grab another drink after dinner!
Had to wait for our reserved table to be ready. Was told to wait by the bar and that they would come and get us when our table was ready. After 15 minutes we went over to ask if our table was ready, and they said "yes it is" and they escorted us to to our table. I received a notice from opentable the next day that I was a no show for my reservation. Obviously something went wrong.
We made reservations for 9:30, we got to the restaurant at 8:45, we didn’t sit until 10:10, even as larger parties who arrived after us were seated ahead of us. The restaurant did send over complimentary appetizers, but when we got our bill they were included in the price. Our server was very helpful and the terrible service wasn’t her fault, just makes you wonder why they would take reservations?
Had an excellent birthday dinner here!
Sampan has great food - and everything was delicious. However the service could improve. We waited over 30 minutes for a table
Great food, service but a bit noisy!
Amazing food but poor service and noisy dining environment.
The highlight of our meal was the service. The low light was the miniscule portions of the appetizers & small plates. The flavors of the dishes were good but not exceptional.
I made a reservation purely because the last time we tried to get here before a show, the wait was incredibly long for a walk-in. Sitting at a table, we couldn't order from the happy hour menu, but that turned out to be a blessing in disguise because we might not have tried all the things we tried. It was all amazing: especially the kimchi fried rice, cheesesteak bao buns, and peanut butter rice krispy sushi. Highly recommend & will definitely be back!
It was quite crowded and fairly noisy, but we were shown to our table in a timely manner and service was efficient. Food, as always, amazing!
Excellent meal and service. Highly recommend sitting at the bar counter facing the kitchen. Great place for a date night or sharing lots of small plates with friends and family.
We’ve been to Sampan many times — mostly drawn by the edamame dumplings. This time, we took some friends on their first visit to the city. The food was consistent with what we’re used to but the service was markedly worse — inattentive wait staff, wrong orders brought to the table, our plates taken away when we were still working on the meal.
Great food, great service! Would definitely recommend to a friend!
Wonderful as always.
Amazing experience as usual! Love the free flowing kitchen, incredible customer service, ambiance and let’s not forget the delectable dishes!
Great food, but if you want a quiet leisurely dinner this is not the place. Extremely loud and hectic, the predominantly black interior and uber-low light levels also make for an un-relaxing experience.
Tasting menu is a great way to experience the many flavors of this restaurant. Chic place, nice crowd for a Saturday night. Was in town for the weekend and was very satisfied with the choice for dinner. Hip part of town too.
Loved this restaurant! We did the tasting menu for the table and had one person with a shellfish allergy who were able to select numerous things within her allergy. We had the cheesesteak bao buns and ordered an extra order after the first was devoured. We also enjoyed the duck bao buns, edamame dumplings, wagyu beef satay, pad thai and every other course we tried! We were here for my birthday and brought out the soft serve ice cream with a sparkler in it! They had blueberry and thin mint both of which were delicious. The sake was awesome as were the mixed drinks. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants we've dined at in Philly. Highly recommend!
Was enjoying my food until found a hair in my fried chicken :-(
Hands down one of my favorite restaurants in Philadelphia. Asian-inspired Tapas. Highlights include the edamame dumplings, the General Tso's soup dumplings, the Tuna Crackers (which we got gratis because we had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated for our reservation, but the staff was very gracious and updated us frequently), the Kimchee fried rice, and the Wagyu beef skewers. The last item was so good, we got it a second time for dessert!
We also got a sake flight which was very tasty.
Table was ready on time. Server was really nice and knowledgeable! Food was excellent but came out a bit too quickly. We did the tasting menu and before we were done one course the next two were already coming out. Wasn’t a big deal just an observation.
We really enjoyed our food - ordered an assortment of appetizers/small plates and a side of pad thai. All was delicious! We went before going to the theatre, and our server did a fantastic job of pacing the dishes so we could enjoy each one and still finish in plenty of time. I would definitely go again!
The food here is always great. My drink (Kiku Mist) was delicious, but the glass was basically all ice. I got 3 sips through the straw and it was done. The seating is pretty tight and it’s VERY noisy. If you can get over the noise and being close to your neighbors, it’s a great space to hang and eat.
All food came out at same time, 4 dishes at once, 2apps & 2 main. Felt very rushed.
The food was amazing as always, but there service was a little slow at first but picked up 20 mins into the evening
