We came for a special occasion with an exceptionally large group and the meal/service was spectacular. We were probably not the easiest group to serve (loud, disorganized, etc.), but the staff was extremely helpful and accommodating. We basically ordered the whole menu, and the food was fantastic. Drinks were great as well from beer to wine to cocktails. Highly recommend.

This is THE place to go for Asian tapas in Philly! The food was creative and delicious! We got the $45 tasting menu which allowed us to taste at least one item from every part of the menu. It was so much food but worth it to try as many plates as possible!

Choose the tasting menu, the food was pretty good, but small portions. Service was a bit impersonal and slow. Overall it was nice, but for the price I was expecting more in comparison to other restaurants' tasting menus at this price point.

Typically I go to Sampan for happy hour & enjoy the food & cheap prices. ($45/2people) Today I went to Sampan & was only given the “resturant week” menu which made me spend 4 times the amount I normally would spend. $195/3 people)
I will go back, but not during Resturant week.

I stumbled upon Sampan when looking for a restaurant to celebrate my teenage daughter's report card. I asked a few friends if they have attended and heard so many good things that I decided to make reservations during Philadelphia Restaurant Week.

As we entered the location, I absolutely loved the atmosphere. The décor and lighting was very nice. The hostess was very friendly and immediately pulled up my reservation. I was seated within 3 minutes.

The only drawback to the night was that we were not aware that the entire table had to participate in the Restaurant menu but it was not a major issue.

The menu had a great variety.

Each selection we chose came out very quickly and all of the food was absolutely delicious !!!! Our waitress and the other staff brining out the food was very nice and accommodating.

My husband and I ordered one of the Whiskey Scorpion Bowls. The bartender did a great job with the drinks.

Although a bit expensive for 3 people, the whole experience was worth it.
I will definitely be returning.

Sampan is always delicious. We had a reservation for 8pm, and didn’t get seated until about 830, which was frustrating. However, the restaurant was very apologetic and sent some appetizers to our table at no cost. It was very generous of them. The meal was great. Be prepared to sit and chat, since he food comes out as inconsistent times, but on the plus it’s always fresh and hot!

Amazing place!! Very crowed during restaurant week but the food definitely made up for that. Also, did an amazing job with crowded scene. Great customer service, the manager checked in with us every now and then.

Came during restaurant week with my roommates. The hostess was really nice and understanding to us despite being more than 15 minutes late. It was really crowded, but not suffocating. You get 7 dishes which are portioned to how many people are eating. Ambiance wise, there was a lot of energy and it was really lively. Definitely a great place to bring friends to catch up and have a fun time. In terms of food:

Small (Great)
Chicken bao bun - Chicken was crispy, and the bun was fluffy. The sauce had the perfect amount of spiciness without it being overwhelming.
General tso dumpling- great soup (definitely embodied general tso flavoring), dumpling meat was average

Satay (Great)
Korean beef - Very tender, light char, and flavorwise was so great. Think a higher quality/flavor of Hmart's seasoned beef

Cold and Hot (Okay)
Rock shrimp - Slight zest, not really crispy (definitely was fried), but tasted fresh

Meat (Miss)
Short rib - both the meat and noodles don't come together well. The meat falls apart easily but no distinguishing taste. The noodles were just there and did not add any value.

Fish (Good)
Roasted scallops - Cooked well, and surprisingly not rubbery! Sauce complimented dish really nicely !

Sides (Okay)
Shrimp pad Thai - Average, not much shrimp and was a bit watery.

The night ended with bite-size soft serve of vanilla and chocolate-mint which was so good!

Made this reservation for a casual work dinner. I was not in attendance but received great feedback the following day. The resonating note being that the food was amazing and that they'd love to go back.

This was by far one of the best experiences I've had at Sampan. Major kudos to Lamar and Vince who were the bartenders on duty a couple of nights ago. They were attentive, made great Old Fashions and even catered the music to me and my guest who was there to celebrate her birthday. Great job to whoever hired them. Give them a raise!

Great service!
Appetizers ( crab taco, egg roll) delicious.
From there it went down hit.
Everything tasted like either Soy sauce or Teriyaki sauce.
Food was barely warm.
Very disappointing meal.
The tiny ice cones were yummy!

I went for restaurant week with my wife and tried the chef’s tasting menu ($10 off/person during RW) and it was a perfect amount of food for both of us while also allowing g us to sample the menu. The atmosphere is great for dates and the staff was very prompt and courteous as well.

Visited for the first time on the first night of Center City's Restaurant Week for my birthday. My party of three was seated right on time and had prompt, great service. The special tasting menu selection was great and had adequate options for my vegetarian companion (more non-meat entree selections would be recommended, though). Although the portions were small, by the end of seven courses, we were all pleasantly full. The food was exceptional, I can't wait to return and will definitely recommend to others for a chic dinner in the city.

We had a girls night out during restaurant week and decided to try Sampan for the first time. It was wonderful. The food was amazing... edamame potstickers and the tuna on rice cakes were two favorites. We also loved the filet and the vegetable rice. Our server was so attentive. We ordered 2 bottles of wine and when they realized they only had one bottle left, they offered a different (amazing) bottle at the same price.
We did have to wait a bit for our table but the hostess was so apologetic and even gave us two appetizers on the house for the trouble. It was little details like that, combined with outstanding food, that made this place terrific. I will definitely go back.

We have been to Sampan on a few occasions prior to attending events at the Academy of Music.
The restaurant is a short walking distance from the theater. The food is excellent. We prefer to do the "7 Selections" option so that we can sample several of the dishes in one sitting. The meal comes out at a slow pace, so if you are attending a show you should leave a decent amount of time to eat. Also, if you let your server know you have theater tickets, that will help to move things along. The place is always packed (even at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon when they open!) so be sure to make a reservation. We use Open Table since they have 15 minute incremental seating times and provide notifications for your reservation.

I get that it's their esthetic, but it's super dark inside. If you're going to use Edison bulbs, please have additional lighting for the menus and for sake pouring. The food was a little too saucy, but the flavors were solid. The spicy cucumber salad was awesome. The broccoli was phenomenal, the Brussels sprouts were a tad bit better than average, and the edamame dumplings were meh. The oyster mushrooms were a little too sweet, but the Korean BBQ satay was perfect. Pad Thai had good flavor wise but way too saucy. Crab Rangoon was disappointing as was the ceviche.

This place was incredible . First date with an incredibly young lady. We ordered great choices from the menu and were surprised at how prompt the service was. The ceviche was so good I did not want to eat it there, I had to take it home. Yes I’m weird like that. She ordered Brussels sprouts and vegetable dumplings/pot stickers and the sauce was incredible. This is now our place and we will be back!

My first time here. Arrived at 8Pm, was seated right away as I had reservations. However, place was packed, lots of walkins and they all were waiting. Loud, noisey. The food made up for those shortcomings. Excellent and tastey dim-sum like menu. Highly recommend.

Great experience! I continue to come back to Sampan; the menu offers many different delicious options great for sharing. The cocktail list is also very good. Only downsides are how dark it is in the restaurant and because the food is "free flowing" we ended up with too much out at once and so a few of the dishes were cold by the time we were able to eat them. My recommendation is to do stagger ordering to help prevent that. My major recommendation are the Korean BBQ Beef Satay, Chicken Bao Bun, Edamame Dumplings and the Ice Cream Sushi!

Have reviewed Sampan before with 5 stars, this time I cannot give that top rating. The food was not as good as in the past. We were seated literally in the worst table in the restaurant with a back door to bar area opening and closing all throughout our meal. We always do the Tasting menu and enjoy the pacing of each item. However, this time 2 and 3 courses were delivered at once. Our waiter was very apologetic about the extremely bad location and the cold draft we had to sit through, so it was nice that he felt our pain! We will go back and hopefully sit in a better, more comfortable location and not do the tasting menu again.

Fantastic place! I love Sampan. We went here for New Year's Eve, and we were seated right away (we had a reservation for 10 pm, we arrived at 9:50, and they sat us). The food is consistently great and most of the prices are pretty reasonable, especially considering the location. The people who work here are very friendly and attentive.

Celebrated New Years Eve last night at Sampan with my boyfriend. We did wait 20 minutes over our reservation time, however since it was NYE we expected the wait. Food was delicious as always! We ordered edamame dumplings, ceviche, crab tacos, chicken bao buns, fried rice & the wok lobster. It is one of our favorite places & we always have good service.

Sampan is one of my favorite places to dine. I haven't been in a year so it was time to revisit. I booked a reservation for 11 people because it was my birthday. There was a delay for our table but the host offered us two free appetizers once we were seated. With the exception of me and two other guests, dining at Sampan was everyone else's first time and everyone enjoyed the food. I had the Chilean Sea Bass and it was phenomenal! My fiancé said he can't wait to go back and try other options on the menu. I can't wait as well:)
