Sampan - Philadelphia Ratings and Reviews
We were seated 30 minutes after the time our reservation was for, which happens commonly at this restaurant. When I told the hostess that this has happened before, she made an excuse and didn’t even apologize for the lateness. This takes away from the quality of everything else (
I’ve never had a bad meal here. Food is always spot on. However, this time was a terrible dining experience. I placed my order around 8 pm (5 people, huge order) and I think everything ordered was rushed to my table by 8:15pm. What kind of experience is this? Have you ever heard of coursing out a meal? This shouldn’t be like eating at Panera or Shake Shack. I’m spending over $60 per person, I expect some kind of dining experience. Don’t rush me out of there. If it was my first time, I’d never go back.
I love love love the food here. However some small plates are really small and overpriced whereas with others you get a lot of food. The price is good and you can try a lot. However the restaurant on a Saturday night is too loud, too quiet, and they rush you out.
This was our first visit and we went with the 7 course tasting menu. Each bite was well presented and, more importantly, very tasty. By the end we had plenty to eat and the miniature twin soft serve cones were a perfect palate-cleansing finish. The servers were friendly and helpful. All in all, we will put in on our go-to list when we are in town.
Birthday meal among 11 friends. They gave a sparkler in ice cream cone which was nice. 9 arrived on time but they didn't want to sit us until whole party was there. Doorway was chaotic.. We were all present moments later for our reservation and still waited about 20 min for the table to get ready (and people to leave where we were supposed to sit). We couldn't even get drinks at bar bc it was too crowded. (Happy hour is insane because the offer is only good at the bar).
Food tasted good. The lobster was difficult (one was not cracked all the way and we had to really work it out), and meals are shared and come out as they arrive. Smart I think so everything is hot. Drinks were unique but took a long time (over 15/20 min). We had a big group but seemed like the bartender could use help. A few had simple orders, like straight whiskey or plain RC soda products. Duck is good, all bao buns were good too.
The color changing walls are a nice touch and if you can sit at the kitchen prep area, that is cool too.
I like this restaurant and have been many times but honestly probably won't come back unless it is 2-4 people and we can sit at the bar. (Note if you can't get there by 430/445, I wouldn't bother as the bar is not that big).
Phenomenal from start to finish. The drinks were fantastic! We didn’t want our dinner to end. You can’t go wrong with the chef’s tasting, 7 selections and in house made ice cream?! Amazing. The staff was attentive and friendly. It’s our goto spot when we visit Philly. Thank you to Sampan for your hospitality and giving us another excellent dining experience.
I would like to thank the friendly staff for a great time. My girlfriend and I showed up late for our reservation. (Totally my fault) they accommodated us even though I inconvenced them. I appreciate that and will definitely be going back. (Food was great too!)
just a great experience. we were early for our reservation so we were given the option to be seated early at the chef's table, which gave us a view into the preparation of the dishes. Our server was really great, there when we needed her, and not there when we didn't. food was great, fun vibe
This was my 2nd visit to Sampan, and both visits were excellent! I recommend the chef's tasting, as it allows the chef to showcase his or her best dishes. Even with one of our party having a shellfish allergy, they customized just his tasting to his dietary restriction and didn't force everyone to do the same thing. Great place and I'll be back when I'm in Philly next time!
We were seated 30 minutes late. The waitress was rude and forgot to bring out a dish that we ordered. When we asked her about it she seemed annoyed that we "still wanted it" and begrudgingly got the chef to pack it up to go. The food is good but the waiting staff and host staff need a lot of work.
My husband and I ordered a couple of small plates for appetizer and each ordered an entry. I finished my very small fish entry before they even brought his. We prefer to eat dinner at the same time and not watch each other. The food tasted good, but portions size were pretty small. I’ve Ordered a drink w/vodka but only tasted Ginger Ale .
Our waiter wasn’t very attentive at all.
We were a little disappointed this time and have been to Sampan many times before. This was for a birthday with around 13 people so we did the tasting menu. Many of the dishes were super spicy and things came out of order. We got the Edamame Dumplings after the sea bass and stir fry. Seemed odd. Some of the dishes lacked flavor that we are used to getting. I was disappointed with this particular night there.
The food and service were excellent and the ambiance was great - but not for a group dinner where you hope to talk to anyone other than the person next to you. It was just too loud. I would definitely go again, but not with a large group that is trying to connect with one another.
Went with another couple for special date night. We did the tasting menu. A little bit pricey, but probably the best way to enjoy a variety of menu items. We ate Wangyu beef satay (excellent), General Tso's Soup Dumplings (excellent), Kung Pao chicken wings (very good), Filet Mignon (very good), vegetable fried rice (excellent - not on the tasting menu, ordered as a side), shaved Brussels sprouts (very good). It was served with mini ice creams for desert. The tasting menu provides a portion of each menu item for each person at the table. Really fun night with good food. It's a little bit dark in the restaurant, but truly enjoyable experience.
