Sampan - Philadelphia Ratings and Reviews
Here we are, Valentines 2018 and we're at our favorite place, Sampan. I made a small request to the hostess Kenzie, hope I spelled it write, asking to sit at the corner table by the window, I mentioned we had gotten engaged at that table 2 years ago. Without any hesitation she said no problem and were sat there right away. Proving she was the utmost professional, she made a mention to our server, Kaihly what I told her and she came to the table with complimentary champagne. Same thing happened last year when we returned for our first Valentines as a married couple. But enough with the accolades, could keep going on, let's talk about the amazing food. Each visit we have the Chef Tasting menu, and it never disappoints.
The food is ridiculously amazing!!! Each course was better than the one before. From the Pork Belly Buns to the Filet Mignon, which BTW, was the best filet ive ever had. Truth be told I work in a high end steakhouse and wish we cooked our steaks as well as these were cooked. They cut like butter!!
Like I said to my wife, I've never repeatedly eaten at the same restaurant, and have been "Wow'd" each and every time. I hope Sampan ( and Kaihly) will be there for a long time to come, so we can return each and every time we have an occasion to celebrate!!!
Thank you Sampan for being the best you can!!
We arrived 10 minutes prior to our reservation and had to wait a half hour by the front door for our table. It was obviously extremely busy. management apologized and told us the table had been there for over three hours and they were going to ask them to re locate if they were done eating. We finally sat and had our order taken at 9:30 pm , we opted for the seven course tasting menu. By 9:54 we were completely done our meal and being asked what we wanted for dessert. After not seeing my friends for several months and then being totally rushed through dinner after waiting for so long, this was a total let down. My water was never re filled, my coffee came with no spoon or sugar and then an attitude when we asked , as if an inconvenience. It was a night we were very much looking forward to and we just did not enjoy ourselves. Food was delicious, portions were ridiculously small, filet didn't even have two slices for each of us. There was five extremely small slices for 3 people ....Just a very unexpected experience. Would not return or recommend
We had a 7 pm reservation for 8 people. Our table was not ready upon arrival and we stood in the fairly crowded bar area. We were finally seated close to 7:30 which caused a bit of anxiety as we were going to a 9 pm show. Once seated however, the service was very good. To save time in making choices we decided to go with the tasting menu. Once that was decided, the food come out very fast and was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the pork bao bun, the swordfish satay and the brussel sprouts. The mini ice cream cones, especially the chocolate orange, were delicious. There was one small error in that we made our server aware of my husband's avocado allergy but the tuna rice cracker was served with the avocado. This was quickly remedied with a new serving of the same minus the avocado. She also threw in an extra dish that was not part of our tasting menu. The food was plentiful and the leftovers packed up for our hungry college student.
It was way overpriced for what they give you, and we had dinner reservations at 6PM booked a week ahead, but we couldn't be seated until 10 minutes later, which normally wouldn't be a big deal, but the food was not worth the wait and huge crowd at all.
For example, the kimchi fried rice-- it was more like warmed rice mixed with kimchi juice, shrimp, and one tiny piece of actual kimchi. The rice didn't even have the "fried, crispy" texture fried rice should have, so it literally just felt like warmed soft rice, not fried rice.
We also ordered the general tso soup dumpling, and the dough was almost raw. You could very easily pinch off a chunk of dough and roll it into a ball because it was so dang soft and undercooked. The inside did not really contain much "soup" either. It was just mushy and there wasn't really much flavor, which was hard to accept considering they called it "general tso".
My boyfriend and I really had high hopes cause it always seemed nice from the outside, and we genuinely wanted to like it. So I'm really sad and reluctant to admit that we had such a largely disappointing experience. We felt bad especially towards the end because, while it wasn't the waitress's fault, the last thing we ordered never came. My boyfriend and I would never come back here ever. (If it's any context at all, I'm Korean-American and my boyfriend is Irish).
Sampan was outstanding. We were a little late to be seated but the manager immediately came and addressed us. Once we sat down the service was great and the food...well beat Asian food I have had. Recommend if you are looking for a nice dinner with your spouse or significant other or with a group of friends for an occasion, make a reservation and go enjoy!
Sampan was awesome as always. The food and service were fantastic and we can't wait to return. The edamame dumplings are great and gets lots of press, but the chicken wings are amazing and should not be missed. The tables were a little backed up and so they didn't seat us immediately, but they were very attentive, the manager checked in on us, and they definitely made it right. All around, another great night at a wonderful restaurant.
Food was great and ambience was perfect for a special occasion. Making a reservation was disappointing due to being seated 20-30 minutes after the reservation time. However, everything else was perfect and they even remembered the rose on the table that was requested.
Choose this restaurant as a casual date night after visiting the Observation Deck. Upon entering we were immediately greeted and seated. We had an amazing waitress who explained the menu thoroughly while also offering her personal top choices. We ordered two drinks and they were not watered down. That’s a MAJOR plus for me. This a small plate restaurant, however, most dishes feeds 2-4 people depending on preferred portions. My personal favorite was Rib Tips and Chicken Stir Fry. Prices were a little high in my opinion , but the food was delicious and ambiance was well worth it. Just writing this entry I can’t wait to go back.
We brought my 92 year old father in after time at The Franklin Institute. He was a foodie before being a “foodie” was hip. He loved everything he had, and thoroughly enjoyed himself. Wait staff is always outstanding. Always a solid choice for great food and great service.
We were hoping to get reservations at Doubleknot- our favorite restaurant- but it was booked up. So we decided to try Sampan. Although not quite as "adventurous" as DK, it was excellent. The lobster didn't quite live up to expectations nor did the shrimp- both could have used a little more taste. However the pork bao bun was even better than the duck scrapple bao bun at DK. Overall, the meal was not quite as good as DK- but damn close. Our one gripe was that the food was coming out too fast (not a complaint that you hear very often). We asked that they slow it down a little, but our request went unheeded. The manager asked how everything was going, so I let him know about our request. He apologized and sent over an additional dessert at the end of our meal- a very nice gesture. Our waitress was very attentive as well as the wait staff who removed empty plates almost immediately.
Have been to Sampan a couple of times, recently revisited with friends & realized how much I miss the place. Quality of dishes have always been consistently excellent. My go-to dishes are: Korean chicken wings, kimchee fried rice, & brussel sprouts. If you want to try a bunch of things on the menu, I'd suggest the Chef tasting (You will be stuffed). It won't be too long before I return, Sampan.
Not the best experience
We waited for over 30 min for our drinks at the table and ordered the 7 course menu- we had to ask for our drinks three times and then all the food- as in Every course- came out before we even got our cocktail?? We sent some
Back and they actually brought it out again after we asked them
Not to over and over
Such a hot meSS!
Manager gave us a free drink but it was a hot mess-
The food was cold and other than the sea bass- I’d never eat there again
The place wasn’t even busy and they gave us seats on opposite corners of table at chefs table - and that’s WITH w reservation made way in advance
I eat in the area a lot and never been so disappointed in service
It has potential food wise but service has to be fixed in a big way
Tonight I finally had the chance to dine at Sampan, I'm not sure if this is considered a 5 star restaurant but it felt like it!!! The atmosphere is great and so are the workers. We were seated immediately. The noise level is loud but it's one of those type of places, and it is very dark inside, bring a flash light lol for the menu. Everything move quick here. The menus are very simply put and once we ordered I can't even explain how quick the food came, the food was great we ordered roasted Scallops (I would do without the sauce on the plate), Brussel sprouts, Wok Charred Lobster (the way the noodles work in this dish is amazing they're originally hard but once mixed they're soft, the chef honestly should try pairing the scallops with these type of noodles it would be a banger)and had Rice Krispy Ice Cream Sushi for dessert. All the workers worked on cue. When we were done one worker cleaned our table while our waiter was helping another table, he saw them clean the table off and as soon as he was done he came over and made sure we were ok and handed us the dessert menu. It really was perfect. I think it's good for first dates, after work or even just spending a night in town. There's bar seating here as well if you're looking to just drink the bartender look like he was mixing up something sweet!! The price range is great. The seating is a little cramped and sometimes share a table with the person right next to you, but whatever. Give it a try!!! I suggest reserving on open table, while we were checking in people were pouring into this place.
My wife is SE Asian so we are more discerning when it comes to Asian food. We ordered 5-6 small dishes. The food is best described as Asian Fusion. Some dishes were good, including the pork belly buns. The kitchen is open and I don’t believe I saw any Asian chefs, maybe a factor in the short comings of some of the traditional Asian dishes. The papaya salad was quite weak. We requested some more fish sauce to improve the dish and received a sweetish sauce. The waitress, who was familiar with fish sauce, explained that is what we hey use for fish sauce. I would NOT recommend ordering the Pad Thai noodles. They were very weak, worst of all the fried tofu was like cardboard. I would recommend the Brussels sprouts which were excellent. We did not think restaurant was as loud as some have said.
Excellent experience. We were a work group of 12 (+1 last minute) arriving after a meeting in Center City. We chose Sampan because of it's location. We were happily greeted and told we would be seated shortly, and we were. Our orders ranged from small snacks to dinners, some drinks and desserts. Everyone was helpful and efficient, and everyone except our server (who couldn't seem to muster up a smile) was friendly.
