Sampan - Philadelphia Ratings and Reviews
This was by far one of the best experiences I've had at Sampan. Major kudos to Lamar and Vince who were the bartenders on duty a couple of nights ago. They were attentive, made great Old Fashions and even catered the music to me and my guest who was there to celebrate her birthday. Great job to whoever hired them. Give them a raise!
Visited for the first time on the first night of Center City's Restaurant Week for my birthday. My party of three was seated right on time and had prompt, great service. The special tasting menu selection was great and had adequate options for my vegetarian companion (more non-meat entree selections would be recommended, though). Although the portions were small, by the end of seven courses, we were all pleasantly full. The food was exceptional, I can't wait to return and will definitely recommend to others for a chic dinner in the city.
We had a girls night out during restaurant week and decided to try Sampan for the first time. It was wonderful. The food was amazing... edamame potstickers and the tuna on rice cakes were two favorites. We also loved the filet and the vegetable rice. Our server was so attentive. We ordered 2 bottles of wine and when they realized they only had one bottle left, they offered a different (amazing) bottle at the same price.
We did have to wait a bit for our table but the hostess was so apologetic and even gave us two appetizers on the house for the trouble. It was little details like that, combined with outstanding food, that made this place terrific. I will definitely go back.
We have been to Sampan on a few occasions prior to attending events at the Academy of Music.
The restaurant is a short walking distance from the theater. The food is excellent. We prefer to do the "7 Selections" option so that we can sample several of the dishes in one sitting. The meal comes out at a slow pace, so if you are attending a show you should leave a decent amount of time to eat. Also, if you let your server know you have theater tickets, that will help to move things along. The place is always packed (even at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon when they open!) so be sure to make a reservation. We use Open Table since they have 15 minute incremental seating times and provide notifications for your reservation.
I get that it's their esthetic, but it's super dark inside. If you're going to use Edison bulbs, please have additional lighting for the menus and for sake pouring. The food was a little too saucy, but the flavors were solid. The spicy cucumber salad was awesome. The broccoli was phenomenal, the Brussels sprouts were a tad bit better than average, and the edamame dumplings were meh. The oyster mushrooms were a little too sweet, but the Korean BBQ satay was perfect. Pad Thai had good flavor wise but way too saucy. Crab Rangoon was disappointing as was the ceviche.
This place was incredible . First date with an incredibly young lady. We ordered great choices from the menu and were surprised at how prompt the service was. The ceviche was so good I did not want to eat it there, I had to take it home. Yes I’m weird like that. She ordered Brussels sprouts and vegetable dumplings/pot stickers and the sauce was incredible. This is now our place and we will be back!
My first time here. Arrived at 8Pm, was seated right away as I had reservations. However, place was packed, lots of walkins and they all were waiting. Loud, noisey. The food made up for those shortcomings. Excellent and tastey dim-sum like menu. Highly recommend.
Great experience! I continue to come back to Sampan; the menu offers many different delicious options great for sharing. The cocktail list is also very good. Only downsides are how dark it is in the restaurant and because the food is "free flowing" we ended up with too much out at once and so a few of the dishes were cold by the time we were able to eat them. My recommendation is to do stagger ordering to help prevent that. My major recommendation are the Korean BBQ Beef Satay, Chicken Bao Bun, Edamame Dumplings and the Ice Cream Sushi!
Have reviewed Sampan before with 5 stars, this time I cannot give that top rating. The food was not as good as in the past. We were seated literally in the worst table in the restaurant with a back door to bar area opening and closing all throughout our meal. We always do the Tasting menu and enjoy the pacing of each item. However, this time 2 and 3 courses were delivered at once. Our waiter was very apologetic about the extremely bad location and the cold draft we had to sit through, so it was nice that he felt our pain! We will go back and hopefully sit in a better, more comfortable location and not do the tasting menu again.
Fantastic place! I love Sampan. We went here for New Year's Eve, and we were seated right away (we had a reservation for 10 pm, we arrived at 9:50, and they sat us). The food is consistently great and most of the prices are pretty reasonable, especially considering the location. The people who work here are very friendly and attentive.
Celebrated New Years Eve last night at Sampan with my boyfriend. We did wait 20 minutes over our reservation time, however since it was NYE we expected the wait. Food was delicious as always! We ordered edamame dumplings, ceviche, crab tacos, chicken bao buns, fried rice & the wok lobster. It is one of our favorite places & we always have good service.
Sampan is one of my favorite places to dine. I haven't been in a year so it was time to revisit. I booked a reservation for 11 people because it was my birthday. There was a delay for our table but the host offered us two free appetizers once we were seated. With the exception of me and two other guests, dining at Sampan was everyone else's first time and everyone enjoyed the food. I had the Chilean Sea Bass and it was phenomenal! My fiancé said he can't wait to go back and try other options on the menu. I can't wait as well:)
We were in town and made a reservation for our anniversary - did want something not too formal and dressy. It was pretty crowded when we got there but they were still able to seat us 15 min prior to our reservation . They recommended to get a drink at the bar first since they had $4 drinks for Happy Hour. Service was great and we trief the tasting menu and were very happy with our choices. They serve small plates to share, which we like a lot. Would definitely go back.
All style with zero substance, the food and cocktails were store bought and awful. Cocktail had to be sent back as the premixed syrup was just a sugary mess. The duck was dry and without flavor, and the only flavor in the duck bao was the store bought hoisin sauce. Dry, flavorless pork belly. The “filet mignon” was like eating canned gravy and beef, was well done despite being supposed to be medium rare, and was disgusting. Of note, the service was great, but the lack of good food or drinks and how overpriced they were, i would never recommend this place.
We had a wonderful time at Sampan! Our waitress was spectacular and knew the menu inside-out. We chose the tasting menu (7 courses with soft serve at the end), and six of the seven dishes were a home run. We loved the hamachi ceviche, the edamame dumplings, the kim-chi fried rice, the short rib lo mein, wagyu beef skewers and the pork belly bao buns. All wonderful. The lobster dish was too tame for my liking and the lobster seemed a bit tough -- additionally there were greens in the dish that kinda killed the overall vibe for me. However, 6 out of 7 certainly isn't bad! Also, the soft serve that was provided was a fun treat - the candy cane soft serve was awesome but the chocolate caramel lacked in caramel and was simply OK. I had the same cocktail, twice -- Eastern Rebellion? It was named something like that, but I loved it.
Overall, highly recommend and I would certainly consider coming back on a future trip to the city.
