Sampan - Philadelphia
Great place! We had a large party and restaurant was very accommodating. Food was amazing! I’m favorite restaurant in Philly.
We went for Restaurant week, after having been to Double Knot, but were unfortunately underwhelmed at Sampan. The food was generally good and well-seasoned, but the pork (we had pork bao buns and the charshu pork entree) was dry and chewy. The Korean bbq satay skewers were also too chewy. Also, our table was not ready until 20 minutes past our reservation time, and then all of the dishes came out very (too) quickly after ordering. This gave the impression that we were not really valued as customers. Overall, if you think you want to try out Sampan, just go next door to Double Knot. Much better.
We came to Sampan for Restaurant Week prepared to have seven selections and a dessert each as described on the website. It ended up being seven selections served family-style, causing us to only have three small dishes each as one of us cannot eat red meat and the other cannot eat fish. The tables aside us also came with the intent of having seven small plates each. Upon ordering our shared plates, the service was very rushed with us having three plates at a time rather than spreading them out plate by plate, finishing our meal in less than 40 minutes. Some of the food was very appetizing (e.g., soup dumplings, bao buns), though. Overall, the quantity was a bit less than expected and we had to get another meal afterwards. This is a good place for happy hour as I’ve attended in the past with friends and coworkers, but the Restaurant Week experience was not up to par with our expectations. I’d still recommend that people attend as all other experiences I’ve had there were top-notch.
Went for restaurant week, everything we tried was delicious. Pork bao bun and shrimp pad Thai are must tries. Love the color changing lights.
I didn’t like the long wait even with rsvp. Also the food wasn’t as good as the previous times I came here. The Korean bbq satay and glazed salmon were the only 2 dishes that were great out of the 6.
We made a 7 P.M reservation for Restaurant Week and were not seated until 7:30. It was too crowded to stand in the entryway waiting on the table without touching elbows with your neighbor. The staff were all doing their best to keep everyone satisfied despite the delay. We had a drink at the bar to kill time (my gin and tonic was definitely more G than T and I'm not complaining!) and were then squeezed into a very cosy table. As a vegetarian, I was able to choose 5 dishes of my own and my guest did the same with the regular menu. This was still the $35 each rate, even though we didn't split 7 dishes between us (a great deal!). The atmosphere was lively and fun, and overall we had a great time. If you don't mind a slight delay or a cosy space, then I think you will as well.
We love Sampan. The happy hour can't be beat, and the tasting menu is perfect for a group that loves to eat. We were there for restaurant week and Patrick was our server. He was phenomenal. Friendly, attentive, fun, and really helped make our night great. I can not say enough about how his service made our experience memorable.
We visited to have the chef's tasting for restaurant week and had a wonderful meal. The Pork Bao Buns are our favorite. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the BBQ Beef Satay is melt in your mouth good. We like to guess the soft serve flavors that come at the the end of the mean and we could not detect any pineapple flavor in the "vanilla pineapple" ice cream we got, but aside from that, everything was perfect.
We will be back, of course.
Loved it we had a great dinner and love the food. Would go back again. Cheers to Sampan for always having great food.
Food was exceptional but the 3 stars is due to service. I had a reservation for 8pm but did not get seated until closer to 9pm. The manager FINALLY offered the group of women seated at our table a round of the drinks at the bar if they would get up after my group stood around for 45 minutes. He didn't offer us drinks when we were finally seated but sent a plate of "snacks" to the table which was really a bite sized piece of food for each person in the party. We would have preferred a complimentary bottle of wine or something more substantial.
A restaurant shouldn't accept reservations if they can't manage them.
Good food and service.
Great service and food. We did okay with 5 plates for two people. I really appreciated that the waiter asked about any food allergies. Service was great overall and the ambiance was cool for a weeknight out.
The Kontai Road drink was delicious. Food was fresh and every dish was a hit. The pork belly was especially delectable. The ambiance was perfect.
CC restaurant week menu was perfect
It was fantastic! My only comment being that I do felt like we were being rushed out a little bit. I understand they were busy but still. Otherwise great food and overall great service.
I had a reservation at 8:15 pm but was not seated until around 8:30 pm. I did not even notice the wait because me and my date grabbed a drink at the bar while we waited. Even though I did not complain, the manager was kind enough to send us a free appetizer. I thought that was very sweet considering we weren't even upset. I've gone to the restaurant countless times. One of my favorites in Philly. The ambiance, the food, the vibe...love it all!
Friends and I went to Sampan for Restaurant Week and loved it! The food was SO good and we loved that we could all share and pick at different plates. Seating was a little cramped but intimate and had a nice atmosphere. Overall excellent meal/service and would definitely go again!
Sampan is a nice low key spot with great food and an elegant atmosphere. There is also a nice bar with a happy hour menu for those who want something more lively. The bar is separated from the dining area . Great for a date. The tasting menu is fantastic, alot of food, and well worth the cost. Good for sharing.
The four of us went there for Restaurant week. We had the 7 course tasting menu. We enjoyed every item we had the food was fabulous. We will definitely be returning. I can’t say enough about this place. Loved it!!!
Very nice place the food was very fresh and prepared to a tee ,it was a fine take on Asian dining in the United States.
Had a really great experience at Sampan. We came for restaurant week and had an amazing meal. Each dish was better than the last. It was an incredible value for such amazing food.
Very nice evening!
Restaurant deal offered a lot and we left very full.
Food was amazing!! I love this place and it did not disappoint, as usual!
The food was amazing and the wait staff was very attentive! Will definitely be going back again
We went for restaurant week, and we left extremely full. We would highly recommend! There were generous portions of our seven courses. Our favorites were the Korean BBQ beef satay, hot chicken bao bun, crispy Brussels sprouts, and crab wonton tacos.
Scott made my sisters first dining experience at Sampan something she talked about the entire drive home. When a restaurants food and atmosphere is dynamic and then to top it off have high quality top of the line service is always like finding the golden ticket to get in at Willie Wonka’s.
It was awesome
Took my 80 year old "foodie" mother! She loved it! I had to order for the both of us (she couldn't see the menu, too dark). But, our waitress was wonderful! Very friendly and patient...
We had a lovely "pre-theater" dinner ....
Delicious food (limited gluten free - but all items glorious) and great service!
fantastic experience and food however food came out a little too quick
Hostess could use some social skills and to come off of her pedestal. It's a super hip spot, but no attitude needed. Definitely took some of the fun out of things. Not impressed.
I had a reservation for 7:30pm, however, we weren't seated until 8:15/8:20pm. To me, it's unacceptable. The reservation was for 10 people, and we were sat in a booth which was barely giving us enough elbow room. Mind you, there was an empty table right next to us that was eventually offered to us to spread out- but at the end of our dining experience. The whole evening felt unorganized and lacked professionalism. I have dined here many times and have thoroughly enjoyed myself. Last night was quite the opposite: dishes were mixed up, orders weren't correct, and we were all squished. I don't typically write reviews, but I was celebrating something special, and my evening felt quite the opposite.
Food taste, variety, and presentation were excellent. Terrific selection of sake. Noise level a bit much.
Sampan is one of our favorite places in the city, and this visit did not disappoint! This was our 5th or 6th visit, but the first in a few years. As always, we got the chef's tasting, and we leave the decisions up to the staff. Every single dish was wonderful. A few highlights were the rock shrimp, the sea bass, the pad thai, and the wagyu skewers. But to be honest, there were no lowlights. We have yet to have a bad dish at Sampan. Our server was excellent - attentive and knowledgeable, but not overbearing. We cannot wait to come back!
We were a party of 4 with a reservation crammed into a 2 top. After a short wait we were promptly reseated so the problem was corrected. Didn’t start well but food was great and it ended well!
The food was great but I had to wait for my table for like 20 minutes even though I booked a table
Delicious, creative , excellent! I can't wait to come back. We highly recommend the General Tsos Soup Dumplings, Cheesesteak Bao Bun, Swordfish Satay, Spare Ribs with lo mein and the XO fried rice!
Amazing food, exceptional service, great energy! I loved it.
The food at Sampan is always so delicious. The duck was phenomenal as was the wagyu beef. I could eat the crispy brussel spouts every day.
I made the reservation for NYE at Sampan simply because I walked by the day after Thanksgiving with my mom and she suggested I'd give it a try for our NYE dinner. I am so glad that I did! The food, we did the tasting menu option, was amazing. My favorites were the short ribs with noodles and the Brussel sprouts. While NYE was super busy, our waitress was attentive and had helpful suggestions for what to order and how each dish would compliment the other. We will definitely be returning on future trips to Philly.
