Sampan - Philadelphia
Loved it, we had a group of 8 and everyone loved their meal!
Two of my friends were in town for a medical conference, and we decided to go to Sampan for dinner after receiving a recommendation from another friend. The three of us ordered the chef's tasting menu, and we could not stop remarking how each dish was equally as delicious as the one we tried before it. We enjoyed nine dishes total, and as we were leaving we all remarked that it was the best meal we have ever enjoyed in our lives. The food was unreal and the service was also the best any of us had ever experienced. Because I live outside of Philadelphia, I'll be back!
We did pre-fixe menu, great for large groups and served family style - delicious!
Wow....This place is a Gem....good food, excellent service, and the price is right. We were visiting Philadelphia for a conference for 4 days...and ended up going to Sampan 3 times. The servers and manager Jamie were great!!! We are going to find a way back! Don't miss it. The unique woodwork outside made us check it out, everything else made us come back, again, and again.
Always a fun atmosphere and great shareable food!
Fantastic service and great food! I thought it was busy for early Saturday, but now I know why.
We did the tasting menu. Awesome experience and food. I had friends visiting from out of town, and they haven’t stopped talking about it.
Always a nice experience, we had a party of 8 and got the Chef’s Tasting Menu. There was so much food and everything was so good. We had a spicy beef, duck, shrimp pad tai, tuna, edamame dumplings, chicken dumplings, roasted brussel sprouts, sea bass that was to die for and so much more. Always a great experience and service was excellent.
Will definitely be back, everything was very good!
Food is a little below average. It’s a fun place to go and the Happy hour menu is nice. That being said, food is not authentic but that’s to be expected since it’s fusion.
The two biggest problem I had with my recent experience here, was our waiter was a jerk. And second our food was very salty. After our meal, I just felt gross and bloated.
I don’t think I’ll be returning. With all the great restaurants around in Philly, there are much better options.
Food and Service was excellent! The menu has a special selection of Asian unique cuisine. The chefs 7 is a variety of small plates that are awesome. Enjoyed every selection. I highly recommend this place.
The friendliness of the staff was amazing. Felt really comfortable to be there.
My first visit to Sampan and won't be my last. The three of shared the tasting menu and it was varied and delicious. Fish, duck, beef, veggies. And the teeny ice cream cones for dessert -- delicious! Our primary server was helpful and charming as were all of the folks who served us.
Tasting menu is amazing! Great service from Nicolas with great suggestions for menu!
Food and service were solid.
Great food, super filling if you do the chefs tasting but really worth it. Huge variety of food. And great drinks. Had a great time
Very good food. We opted for the Chefs Selection, 7 course meal. And it was the best decision to make. The food was delicious and the service was amazing. Highly recommend this place.
Food was aesthetically pleasing, creative and tasty, but a little too salty. It needed more of some other types of seasonings rather than salt. Noodles that came with the dishes also were a little on the greasy side. We did the tasting menu which allowed for several plates. Plates are very small which I know is the thing for tasting menus, but I thought it was a little overpriced for what you got.
Service was excellent.
We had a reservation at 5:00. We were seated immediately. Music was a little too loud for an early dinner reservation. I can understand that volume at 8:000, but at 5:00 I thought it might be a little more mellow.
The manager gave us a free round of drinks because he needed us to switch tables for a reserved party.
They will not seat you until all of your party is present. I understand restaurants want to do this but I subtract points as it is an inconvenience for me. Food is always tasty here. Too noisy for me, it is hard to hear my companions.
Overall, the food is really good and the choices are very interesting. A couple of items were good but not as good as the previous time (edamame dumplings and the hamachi ceviche) and the lobster noodles were a bit disappointing and also hard to deal with because some of the lobster pieces' shells were not cracked, which made getting to the meat difficult and messy. I wish the place wasn't so incredibly noisy. It is very difficult to have a conversation and perhaps even enjoy the good food with so much noise, but that seems to be the trend these days!
Good experience. Service was spotty. Inattentive.
Good - unique food and very friendly/kind staff. GF options too! We'll be back the next time we're in Philly.
Somewhat forbidding exterior hides terrific restaurant. Great for after theater, since it opens at 4 pm on Sunday.
Amazing! Schulson Collective never disappoints!
Magnifique, could easily eat the entire menu and still go back. Good dranks too.
The server was great can’t remember his name, the rabbit rolls were awesomeee!!!
Food and drinks were phenomenal! It’s a great restaurant for a Friday or Saturday night outing. The only downside is the seating is kind of tight.
Very bad service. Seated 30 minutes late and the food came all at once
We had a great experience dining at Sampan! It took about 15-20 minutes to get seated after our reservation time because the restaurant was packed on a Saturday night- the staff was very gracious and bought us an appetizer to thank us for our patience. The food was delicious, as were the cocktails, and our server was very attentive and personable. Would highly recommend this place and will consider visiting again the next time I'm back in Philly.
Perhap Saturday night was not the best choice--but while the food was very good, the noise level was such that conversation was more or less impossible.
Food was excellent; service was wonderful and efficient. Great experience.
So much fun and loved all the food. Great experience!
Had dinner prior to going to theater nearby. The food was excellent service was great. However a bit pricey. Definitely catered to young crowd because the noise level was pretty high but I asked for a seat away from a lot of the noise and they did try to accommodate us.
Amazing food.. tried the tasting menu and it was well worth the cost. One down side is that the bar area is very small, and you can’t get happy hour drink prices once seated at your table. Great service and lots of options on the menu.
The food is really good. We were a party of 3 and did the tasting menu. I didn't think the portions were sized properly for our group. We left satisfied but wishing that we'd had a proper taste of some of the bigger ticket items like the filet and lobster. It did feel a little rushed like they were trying to just move us on through by bombarding the table simultaneously with our different items but it was explained that it's how they operate beforehand. Not a fan of that aspect. Lovely ambience, friendly server. I thought the Pad Thai was exceptional. I'll probably be back for that alone.
The food was amazing!! Everything was delightful! The customer service was excellent. Will definitely return.
I arrived a little later than planned and had limited time. They assured me that they could take care of me and that they did. I received my order within minutes and the wonderful staff continued to check on me to make sure that I had what I needed. I have to say too that the edamame dumplings were amazing, so much so that I had two orders! Joshua was particularly wonderful. I look forward to going back very soon!
