Sammy's Trattoria Ratings and Reviews
Given the expanding dining scene in Baltimore there are some improvements that can be made for Sammy’s to be a bit more appealing and competitive within the market. We switched some silverware with an unoccupied adjacent table due to some residue on our utensils, a water glass we were given had a large crack, and our appetizer was served in a chipped plate.
The freshly baked bread and seasoned oil for dipping was delicious, but unfortunately was the highlight of the meal as far as quality ingredients.
The pasta included with the spaghetti and meatballs was not fresh, homemade but rather pre-made. Where many newer establishments me their postal daily, doing the same at Sammy’s would be a step in the right direction.
To their credit, all portions were enormous and you will not leave hungry.
Sammy's never disappoints. The food is always authentic, fresh, and tasty and they have a good wine list. My husband comes from an Italian family who always begs to go when they are in town. They agree that it is the best around. I am gluten free and NEVER feel like there isn't plenty for me to eat and enjoy. There are naturally gluten free options like risotto and several entrees, but Sammy's always has gluten free pasta that tastes pretty darn good as well.
My husband and I have dined at Sammy's a number of times before the Symphony-the food is good, bar service is quick and it's a quick walk to the show.
We made reservations for TWO HOURS before showtime and our food arrived after an hour and a half, forcing us to eat quickly and run to the show. During that time, our drinks were not refilled and no apology was offered.
I understand that we were dining during the holiday season, and that the waiter has no control over the kitchen, but the food preparation was slow and some of it was cold when it came out. I'd recommend dining elsewhere if you're eating at Sammy's before another engagement (even if you think you're giving yourself plenty of time).
Seated in the basement dining room--not the nicest location. Food was good on the whole (6 guests, 6 different entrrees; most of us were happy with our dish). Service was spotty, but the staff were pleasant and friendly. I would eat here again if an occasion presented itself.
Impromptu dinner at Sammy’s turned out quite well. Due to the time constraints, we only had time for a quick bite and these bites were delicious! Garlicky olive oil and warm bread to start, house salad generously dressed with Parmesan, shrimp toast for me (good lumps, tasty sauce that did not overpower crab, minimal amount of crusty bread), and scrumptious sausage and peppers for hubby (appetizer that could easily be an entree: charred, not greasy sausage, creamy peppers). Black bottom cheesecake - light and soft filling, classic chocolate dough) and berry tea completed this very satisfying meal. We split salad and desert and still left full. Lovely ambiance, very good service - on the spot suggestions, very quick delivery, engaging and friendly staff. We’ll be back!
Se had a wonderful evening meal before the Chicago concert. Great parking across the street - a very friendly parking guy! we love the atmosphere, the prices are quite reasonable, and we will be back again! Thanks for a special evening - Clem and Jean Gaines, Columbia.
Went prior to concert at Lyric. Had reservations 2 hours before event. Restaurant was severely understaffed to handle large number of reservations due to event. We're out of many wine & menu items. Took an hour to be served salads. 2 of us got our salads 30 minutes before the other 2 in our party- same with entrees. Diners at neighboring table never received their entrees after 1.5 hours. We're told they still had to pay. Will never go again prior to event
We were a party of two and seated in a basement room with no ambiance but plenty of noise. A very large table for over 30 was next to us. Our server was very frantic preparing for the large party. The restaurant was seriously understaffed in this particular room. Our entries were nothing even close to outstanding and the wait from time of order to good served was excessive. We will not go back.
I will never eat at Sammy’s Trattoria again. I made a 6:00 pm reservation on OpenTable and was told when I arrived at 6:00 pm that no table would be available for at least another 45 minutes. I had concert tickets and couldn’t wait another 45 minutes. This is the second time I made a reservation at Sammy’s Trattoria and was told when I arrived at the reserved time that no table was available. Sammy’s should be removed from OpenTable. Sammy’s is unreliable.
Disappointed that gluten free pasta was not available after calling in advance. Server was nice but not knowledgeable of menu options. It was a busy night with slow service. Three people seated at table for two made for crowded dining. No incentive to return.
Very busy night so our entrees took over an hour to arrive from when we ordered. I know it's all made fresh but that seemed like an unusual amount of time to wait. It would have been helpful if our waitress was a little more attentive - i.e. "any more bread?" or "anything else to drink?" or "sorry it's taking so long" etc. Pretty basic stuff. But otherwise the food is very good.
Sammy's is a neighborhood Italian restaurant that transports you to a friendly but somewhat sophisticated European destination as soon as you walk in the door. The staff are amazing, food outstanding and the portions are large at an amazing value.
I recommend to any and all--there are small tables that are intimate, large tables for families and larger groups, and everything in between.
Sammy's is an authentic Italian restaurant with a family vibe and lots of energy. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed amazingly flavored entrees and a bottle of prosecco for my mom's birthday. My only "complaint" was that the food took a while to come out, however, when it arrived it was piping hot, perfectly cooked and seasoned and was well worth the wait. It also made me feel like we had a more authentic dining experience because we could take our time and savor everything.
I ordered a BoMbay GIN martini on the rocks. The drink was served without ice. Rather than taking it back and fixing it the waitress grabbed a glass of ice. Then it turned out it was not gin but Grey Goose vodka. Then they brought the wrong entree. When the correct entree came the side of pasta was cold. Not warm but cold When I complained to the host on the way out I was brushed off with the comment that they would try to make it up next time. On the other hand, my wife’s meal was fine as have been other meals when we ate there.
Sammy's is outstanding. From Steve at the front of house, through the parting espresso, all is magnificent. The food is great, and it is especially fun to enjoy house created specialties, such as crab bruschetta and sausage with pepper and onions. Great wine, too. You all should go there.
Made a reservation through open table for a 6pm reservation as we had tickets to the Speakers Series at the Meyerhof at 8. When we got there on time, there were 8 people ahead of us in line. There was only 1 person at the front desk seating. He seated the people in front of us and then began calling people behind us by name to seat them. When he finally got to us, I told him we had a reservation through open table. He said we weren't on the list and he didn't know how we got one as they had closed Open Table. I showed him my confirmation and we got a table begrudging. Waitress came a couple of minutes later and we ordered our wine, appetizers and entrees. We told her we had tickets at 8 and she could bring us everything at once to expedite things. We got our wine and then sat there for 1 ½ hours waiting for our food. We were at the point of leaving when the food came. 2 tables next to us didn’t receive their dinner at all before we all had to leave. One of them only got an iced tea and when they told they waitress they were leaving, she presented them with a bill for the ice tea. Other table complained to the host that they had been there for an hour and a half and his response was that one should expect 2 hours to dine there, the kitchen was backed up and if their food came out he would have it packed to go. They left in disgust without food or paying. Our bill was incorrect by $32 as we were charged for a bottle and a glass of wine instead of just 2 glasses. By scarfing the food and getting a correct bill, we just made it to the lecture on time. Food wasn’t bad, but misrepresented on the menu somewhat. We ordered a caprese salad and an arugula one. The caprese was a miniature arugula salad with a round of buratta and 2 grape tomatoes cut in half—no basil anywhere. Rest of the food was decent, but we won’t every go there again
We ate there on October 24, 2017. At the restaurant's suggestion we made reservations more than 2 hours before a show at the Meyerhoff. The show was at 8:00 just a few blocks from the restaurant. We sat down at 5:45 and had ordered before 6:00 and before most other diners had arrived. We waited almost an hour for the food, had to eat in a rush and had to leave in a hurry without dessert. This is my third time there and it's been the same every time. I do not blame the wait staff. They were hustling as much as they could. How can a restaurant that has a full house of reservations on show nights consistently plan so poorly with cooking and food delivery ? Don't go there unless you want to be stressed out BIG TIME worrying whether you will make it to the show on time. It's not worth it.
We were grabbing dinner prior to an event at the Meyerhoff, however, we ended up going without dinner!!! We had a reservation, which should have allowed enough time to make our show. However, after waiting one and a half hours for our entrees to arrive, we just had to leave.
The waitress was bringing in our food as we were walking down the stairs to leave. She did offer to pack it up for us but it would have been impossible to take it in to the event. We had told them when we first arrived that we were on a deadline, and reminded them several times during the wait.
First time visiting Sammy's before a show. What great food. More than I could comfortably consume in one sitting but they were great about boxing up. Give yourself at least two hours before a show to eat there and know that it fills up FAST! Totally worth it.
