Sammy's Trattoria Ratings and Reviews
We were a party of two and seated in a basement room with no ambiance but plenty of noise. A very large table for over 30 was next to us. Our server was very frantic preparing for the large party. The restaurant was seriously understaffed in this particular room. Our entries were nothing even close to outstanding and the wait from time of order to good served was excessive. We will not go back.
I will never eat at Sammy’s Trattoria again. I made a 6:00 pm reservation on OpenTable and was told when I arrived at 6:00 pm that no table would be available for at least another 45 minutes. I had concert tickets and couldn’t wait another 45 minutes. This is the second time I made a reservation at Sammy’s Trattoria and was told when I arrived at the reserved time that no table was available. Sammy’s should be removed from OpenTable. Sammy’s is unreliable.
Disappointed that gluten free pasta was not available after calling in advance. Server was nice but not knowledgeable of menu options. It was a busy night with slow service. Three people seated at table for two made for crowded dining. No incentive to return.
Very busy night so our entrees took over an hour to arrive from when we ordered. I know it's all made fresh but that seemed like an unusual amount of time to wait. It would have been helpful if our waitress was a little more attentive - i.e. "any more bread?" or "anything else to drink?" or "sorry it's taking so long" etc. Pretty basic stuff. But otherwise the food is very good.
Sammy's is a neighborhood Italian restaurant that transports you to a friendly but somewhat sophisticated European destination as soon as you walk in the door. The staff are amazing, food outstanding and the portions are large at an amazing value.
I recommend to any and all--there are small tables that are intimate, large tables for families and larger groups, and everything in between.
Sammy's is an authentic Italian restaurant with a family vibe and lots of energy. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed amazingly flavored entrees and a bottle of prosecco for my mom's birthday. My only "complaint" was that the food took a while to come out, however, when it arrived it was piping hot, perfectly cooked and seasoned and was well worth the wait. It also made me feel like we had a more authentic dining experience because we could take our time and savor everything.
I ordered a BoMbay GIN martini on the rocks. The drink was served without ice. Rather than taking it back and fixing it the waitress grabbed a glass of ice. Then it turned out it was not gin but Grey Goose vodka. Then they brought the wrong entree. When the correct entree came the side of pasta was cold. Not warm but cold When I complained to the host on the way out I was brushed off with the comment that they would try to make it up next time. On the other hand, my wife’s meal was fine as have been other meals when we ate there.
Sammy's is outstanding. From Steve at the front of house, through the parting espresso, all is magnificent. The food is great, and it is especially fun to enjoy house created specialties, such as crab bruschetta and sausage with pepper and onions. Great wine, too. You all should go there.
Made a reservation through open table for a 6pm reservation as we had tickets to the Speakers Series at the Meyerhof at 8. When we got there on time, there were 8 people ahead of us in line. There was only 1 person at the front desk seating. He seated the people in front of us and then began calling people behind us by name to seat them. When he finally got to us, I told him we had a reservation through open table. He said we weren't on the list and he didn't know how we got one as they had closed Open Table. I showed him my confirmation and we got a table begrudging. Waitress came a couple of minutes later and we ordered our wine, appetizers and entrees. We told her we had tickets at 8 and she could bring us everything at once to expedite things. We got our wine and then sat there for 1 ½ hours waiting for our food. We were at the point of leaving when the food came. 2 tables next to us didn’t receive their dinner at all before we all had to leave. One of them only got an iced tea and when they told they waitress they were leaving, she presented them with a bill for the ice tea. Other table complained to the host that they had been there for an hour and a half and his response was that one should expect 2 hours to dine there, the kitchen was backed up and if their food came out he would have it packed to go. They left in disgust without food or paying. Our bill was incorrect by $32 as we were charged for a bottle and a glass of wine instead of just 2 glasses. By scarfing the food and getting a correct bill, we just made it to the lecture on time. Food wasn’t bad, but misrepresented on the menu somewhat. We ordered a caprese salad and an arugula one. The caprese was a miniature arugula salad with a round of buratta and 2 grape tomatoes cut in half—no basil anywhere. Rest of the food was decent, but we won’t every go there again
We ate there on October 24, 2017. At the restaurant's suggestion we made reservations more than 2 hours before a show at the Meyerhoff. The show was at 8:00 just a few blocks from the restaurant. We sat down at 5:45 and had ordered before 6:00 and before most other diners had arrived. We waited almost an hour for the food, had to eat in a rush and had to leave in a hurry without dessert. This is my third time there and it's been the same every time. I do not blame the wait staff. They were hustling as much as they could. How can a restaurant that has a full house of reservations on show nights consistently plan so poorly with cooking and food delivery ? Don't go there unless you want to be stressed out BIG TIME worrying whether you will make it to the show on time. It's not worth it.
We were grabbing dinner prior to an event at the Meyerhoff, however, we ended up going without dinner!!! We had a reservation, which should have allowed enough time to make our show. However, after waiting one and a half hours for our entrees to arrive, we just had to leave.
The waitress was bringing in our food as we were walking down the stairs to leave. She did offer to pack it up for us but it would have been impossible to take it in to the event. We had told them when we first arrived that we were on a deadline, and reminded them several times during the wait.
First time visiting Sammy's before a show. What great food. More than I could comfortably consume in one sitting but they were great about boxing up. Give yourself at least two hours before a show to eat there and know that it fills up FAST! Totally worth it.
we were going to the ballet so this was close. We decided to sit at bar for Happy Hour no problem with the wine We shared the salad which was fine. The main course was not good. I had the clams in white wine that had no taste . My friend had the crab toast appy which she had to send back because it was burnt. Waiter offered desert but charged us for it. I would never go back
Restaurant was understaffed for crowd before Speakers Series lecture. Well over an hour before food came. Bread arrived with entree for friends arriving late. Waiter was very nice, and apologetic. Eggplant parmesan was unevenly cooked/breaded, and greens were undercooked.
We had a good dinner but first were seated at an awkward spot in an empty basement. While other people were getting seated in the lively first and second floor. Eventually the basement filled up but it was very hot and very noisey. We got over it because the service was so good. Although - they didn't have a drink menu but I was recommended a martini which they make all the time - a Brazilian martini. I guess there is one? But perhaps I couldn't see it? So weird. My seafood fra diovolo was delicious. Date had the Scallops Truffle dish. The scallops were good but the risotto was a little clumpy and meh. Drinks were good. I won't go back because I felt it was a little subpar to be separated, not have a drink menu, and to have 1/2 good food.
I always order the same thing here because it's just so darn good but this time I strayed and ordered linguine in clam sauce. OMG the clams were abundant, tender and fresh as was the pasta. Yum! Now I think I might just try something new every time I visit!
This is a mixed review of sorts.
My wife had the lasagna bolognese which she has had before and thoroughly enjoyed as usual.
My sister-in-law had a pasta in vodka sauce with chicken and was also very happy with it.
I usually have the Duck ravioli which I've always enjoyed but this time I decided to change and had the Clams Vongole in White sauce. I'm afraid this was sort of disappointing. On the positive side there was an abundance of clams. What didn't measure up however was the sauce. I've always found that the best clam sauce has a definite taste of the clams themselves and tends to be somewhat on the thin side. This sauce was rather gelatinous, had an abundance of garlic (which kept repeating on me later) and simply didn't measure up to better white clam sauces I've had, usually in NY, in the past.
Overall, definitely a good restaurant and affordably priced but didn't quite measure up to meals I've had here in the past.
Overall, this restaurant was good but a bit disappointing in terms of what we expected for a pretty highly rated restaurant. Our group ordered mainly pastas and they were good but not memorable. I would say the food was a notch better than olive garden. One of us ordered the chicken marsala and it was not very good. Cheesecake Factory makes a better marsala. The best part of the restaurant was the service and the bread and oil that is complimentary. Definitely not a place we will return to.
Let me start by stating that I hate giving bad reviews but this place earned it. When we arrived we were brought downstairs to the basement. It was charming but essentially an echo chamber. The waitress arrived looking a bit on edge and asked what we would like to drink. I ordered a bottle of wine for my wife and I but before my daughter had a chance to order she left to get the bottle. She returned with the wine and 4 glasses. I let her know my 18 and 14 y o daughters were not drinking wine. She nodded and told us we would have to wait for the other waitress who had THE bottle opener. The food was the worst part. It was all bad. I'm pretty certain the meatballs were not prepared on site. Same with the chicken alfredo. My daughters pizza was burned and the Gorgonzola sauce that accompanied my steak tasted like mayonnaise. Best part is when we asked for more bread they gave us stuff that was clearly a few days old. Unfortunately the food was only cheap in terms of ingredients. Waste your money somewhere else!
Sammy's is an authentic trattoria with a unique menu and cordial customer service. We were treated very well by our server and "Pauly" our bartender. They use quality liquor when making the specialty drinks, and quality ingredients when preparing our meals. Thank you for delightful eating experience.
Went to restaurant with reservation. Restaurant was not crowded with many empty tables.
Waited over 5 minutes for a waitress to tell me someone will be over soon. A few minutes later that same waitress came over and asked for our reservation. We then waited till she set a table for 2 and we were seated. Since being seated, other customers came in (3 partys of 4) and were seated after us. We waited and waited and no waitress came over. Meanwhile those other parties received water, drinks, and bread. Finally I looked at the bartender who motioned to the waitresses. They seemed to argue and no one wanted to come to serve us. Finally after no one came to our table, we decided to leave the restaurant. It was our first time there. We went because of friends recommendations. We will never go back
