Sammy's Downtown Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Really enjoyed our evening at Sammy's, a nice menu with plenty of options. We started with two fabulous salads; grilled octopus and what they called a caprese salad with avocado, portobello mushrooms and grilled pear. Both were terrific. For entres, two at my table had pasta, one traditional with spaghetti and meatballs, and the other with different mushrooms and some chicken and I had the Veal Samantha, a play on Veal Milanese with a salad of tomatoes and mozzarella which was really tasty. The service however was not great. Our waiter took half of our order then said he needed to step away. He then went to another table, took their order, and then another table and didn't come back to us. After an extended period of time, I said that he still hadn't finished taking our order. He looked surprised but still said he had to come back. Finally after quite some time he took the rest of the tables order and left. I would say the entire process was in excess of 15 minutes. After he took our order he came back again to clarify one of the dishes saying he couldn't read his own hand writting! Much to my surprise everything came right. The busboy was terrific but I would not give the waiter a gold star. But even with the weak service, the evening was most enjoyable and I would surely go back to Sammy's Downtown Bistro again !
Myself and family members meet for lunch at Sammy's every so often; a few members from Scarsdale, a few from Greenwich and a few from NYC. This location is central and works for everyone. We are always consistently very, very pleased with the food. We all selected something different and every person was extremely pleased.
The service is fantastic....a lovely young female server could not have been nicer. Staff at bar equally as friendly and eager to please.
So, we continue to come for the terrific food as well as the warm, professional service we receive from the staff.
Sammy's will continue to be our "meeting place".
Thank you all @ Sammy's for a very lovely afternoon.
We went to Sammy's Downtown to celebrate my sister's birthday! We had a lovely time & the food was REALLY delicious !!! The waitress was adorable , very sweet & accommodating. The lemon cake dessert with ice cream that we shared was scrumptious . The restaurant was very comfortable . We did not have to shout to hear each other talk!! I am looking forward to going again very soon!! Thank you for a memorable day!!!
Delicious dinner. They put their own spin on the tuna tartar - I'd go back just for that. But everything was simply delicious. My halibut special livornaise was moist and tasty. My wife's chicken francaise was one of the best she's ever had - we just had all four of us talking about how wonderful the food was. Attentive service, an atmosphere that actually allows you to talk to each other, this place is a keeper.
Was just ok... loud, and not very gracious... there wasn't any "good evening" or "how are you guys tonight?" Felt rushed to get out of there... The experience was akin to going to a cafeteria....impersonal, like a factory. If the food and ambience were blockbuster I may not have cared so much but it was all just mediocre unfortunately ... maybe they were just having a bad night?
On the upside, this is one of the few restaurants in the neighborhood where the noise levels remain low throughout the evening. Also, for what it aspires to, the prices are reasonable.
On the downside, the plentiful staff were rushed and perfunctory when the place was only half full. All the dishes we had were (barely) acceptable but noting to write home about. The arugula pear salad was plain boring and the tuna tartare too acidy (served on a risotto cake that was on the edge of being burnt). The penne carciofi was way too greasy and the lobster ravioli were overcooked (the crabmeat on the side was good). Sad to say that the very basic lemon bundt cake was the best part of the meal - not fancy but very satisfying.
