Saltus River Grill Ratings and Reviews
Made a date with my fiancé for Valentine’s Day for 8:45. We got there at 8:30 and were told that it would be a 15 minute wait (as expected) but we were welcome to get a drink at the bar while we waited. Not a whole lot of people at the bar but still took 5 minutes for anyone to come over to take our order. She also offered us a menu and said that they were out of salmon but the other sushi and oysters were great if we were interested. We told her we had a table and would order them there. She said ok and we went on our way to be seated. When we were sat, we were told that the menu items were not available an that only the pre-prepared 4 course menu was available. It was $75 per person which is fine but I didn’t want that much food and for $75, I expected better selections. We ended up finishing our wine and left. Would not recommend for any night they have a predetermined menu. Also, ask if the menu is available other than that the bar. I’ve been here before for everyday dining and never had a problem. But I will never go back for a date now.
Valentines date with the wife. Everything was great. Went with the special Valentines menu.
4 courses with 3-4 items to chose from in each course.
Price was a little pricey but it is Saltus. Upscale and top shelf. Place to go to impress.
Would definitely return for any special occasion.
Forgot to serve the second course; went directly to the main course after salad.
The check was incorrectly tallied...to my favor, but wrong nonetheless. (We corrected the mistake. For the many mistakes of the night, they did "comp" a glass of wine.
The fish (stuffed flounder) was over-cooked and and the crab meat stuffing was blah.
Excellent dining experience with a couple of exceptions.
The steaks were cooked perfectly, but did not arrive very warm. The kitchen uses sous vide technique, which makes for delicious and perfectly cooked steaks. However, the process requires that the steak be served on warm or hot plates. Three at our table commented that the steak was great, but being too cool, made them less satisfactory.
The wine prices were very high, in our opinion, more than 3 times what the normal retail price is, for the wines we knew. We most often see 2 times the retail price, to sometimes 2.5 times. We usually have wine with dinner, but we passed this time.
The crab cake appetizers were the best we and our guests have had...they were perfect.
We shared a dessert among 4 of us and it was excellent as well.
We had a great time and would recommend it to our friends, with the above comments as exceptions.
We had family in town and all seemed very pleased with their entrees, starters, sides and desserts. Our service was exceptional; very personable without being intrusive and intimate knowledge of menu and preparation of dishes. My individual meal was the shrimp and grits which I was unable to eat but a few bites due to excessive salt. I didn't mention it because I'm not certain it just wasn't my sensitivity to salt. It was no big deal and everyone else really enjoyed the food.
Food was excellent but the service was poor. Our appetizers were served in a timely manner. However, they seemed to forget our main courses. It took over an hour for the main course to arrive and by the time it came I was tired and ready to leave. Really too bad because the grouper special was excellent. The restaurant was not very busy when we first arrived. We have had similar service issues in the past with large gaps between courses and inability to get the attendtion of our waiter. Because of the uneven service, Saltus is not our first or second choice for local dining.
Wonderful Staff from the moment we walked in! There was someone there to literally open the door for us and the staff continued to impress through the whole meal. Food was WOW and no doubt some of the best Sushi in the area....... period! Not our first time dinning here and definitely not our last!
Great Crab Bisque and Caesar salad! Server Garner and his helper were very attentive, prompt, professional and polite! Salmon with Bernadine sauce had great flavor and good but a bit overcooked than medium; but still enjoyable! Chocolate dessert was
Divine!! Nice evening and look forward to another time.
I misread menu thinking fried oysters and was step above raw. They gave me friend oysters even though not on menu. Also gave me a free dessert. Can't believe how accommodating they were. Had the most outstanding gal who served us. Thanks for going above and beyond to serve me.
One of our favorites, but tonight was a disappointment. Restaurant Week in Beaufort, but not busy at all. Server was not involved with her clients. We had a drink, ordered meals and wine. Food was room temperature and sent back. Not much warmer when returned. Never asked if we wanted more wine. Never asked if we wanted
D an after dinner drink. Just an off night at one of our favorite restaurants. We'll be back, but only because we've had so many excellent meals here.
Had visitors from out-of-state and took them to Saltus for dinner. As always, impeccable table service but was disappointed with the food itself. the bisque was watery; the salad had very little crab in it; and one dessert was actually returned as it was not at all good. Disappointing considering the relatively high prices. Have had very positive experiences in the past, but this one was a bummer and I was somewhat embarrassed that my guests were dissatisfied.
This was our second visit (in two nights)!
I just wanted to see if Saltus Grill was as good as my first impression. It was better!
Ordered lthe market fish whi ch was Carolina sole steamed with scallion and fennel in parchment over rice. I have enjoyed sole in many fine resturants, but I must say this was the very best hands down.
My thanks to Kathie the night before with her description and especially to Devon for confirming my choice.
This is a fine resturant for the discerning gourmet..

Our first visit was delightful. Tried the restaurant week menu and it was delightful. I love that they have a changing seasonal menu along with a few lowcountry standards. The soup du jour and crab bisque were outstanding. My favorite part of the meal was the country pate appetizer that I shared with my husband. House made to perfection and served with toast made from an artisanal bread also baked in house. The service was impeccable. The menu was creative, I look forward to returning. It is a bit pricey most entrees in the $35 range,
Food and service were very good although the restaurant is getting a bit tired esthetically. Bathrooms need a serious uplift with holes in wall in mens bathroom and stalls that are dirty. Would expect more from this establishment.
Management should walk around with staff and look for areas to improve, be it cleaning, carpets, walls...
We have been to Saltus River Grill several times in the past and were always extremely pleased with the food and the service. However, our visit on New Year's Eve was a disaster. A cocktail was served while being splashed all over the table, they ran out of certain items at 9 pm (on New Year's Eve), each time a plate was brought to the table it was presented to the wrong person, our wine glasses were refilled once with only one glass being filled, leaving the other two completely empty, the fish was fairly bland, the chicken was delicious, but the accompanying items in the dish were practically nonexistent ... and it was incredibly expensive. Having gone there in the past and having lovely experiences, this was a huge disappointment, especially considering the expense and the fact that we were celebrating New Year's Eve.
