Salt House Tavern - A 75-seat, contemporary tavern housed in an old printing press warehouse built in the 1930’s. Exposed brick, original hardwood floors, 12 foot windows and oversized rusted iron girders. It's really hard to rate their food - it was wonderful but incredibly over salted.
The soup had such wonder flavors that I doubted my first impression of too salty but then the entrée was definitely too salty and ....so was the dessert! I figured out that it was the "maple walnuts" that were the problem, pushed them to the side and loved the panne cotta.

I highly recommend this restaurant but warn you to insist that little or no salt be added to your order.

I've eaten here several times, but the menu selection, which used to be somewhat imaginative, and food quality have gone downhill. I struggled to find something that appealed to me at lunch (the only meal I have had here). Not much healthy; I ended up with the fried chicken sandwich. It was unoffensive but hardly pleasing. Expensive for what you get.

We chose the Salt House after an Internet search - we were both in San Francisco on business and wanted a good restaurant to meet up. Our waiter was superb, especially on recommendations for wine. And that's how we got introduced to "Orange Wine" - wine made as the ancient Romans made it. So we enjoyed a terrific meal, a great wine and got a live education in wine history. All good value!

We went for a later dinner and were absolutely floored by the food. We had the bass and the salmon (I think, might have to confirm) and they were cooked to perfection. We did start with the shishito peppers, and they were just fantastic. The wine list was also good, and we split a bottle that was delicious. I would definitely come back.

I've eaten here twice before - once for business and once for pleasure- and both were quite good. This time there were a lot of missteps. We added a person the night before and had to move our res up by 15 mins, but when we arrived, our table wasn't ready and we had to wait until our original res time. Annoying but not a big deal as the people at the table wouldn't leave. The hostess was nice and kept us informed, even offering us a cocktail while we waited. Finally we were seated at a table upstairs. It was really hot up there. Someone (not our server) came and took our drink and app order, I guess to get us going while our server was occupied. A different person took our entree order, and then different people ran the food to us. Not my preference, but ok. The apps came out fairly soon and were fine, but then we waited almost 45 mins for our entrees! They came twice to tell us there were almost ready and that the kitchen was backed up, and they did send out another round of apps after the second apology for the wait. However, they didn't bring us additional plates, so when I put a spoonful of nuts into my hand not realizing they'd been deep fried, I scorched my palm, so badly I had to ask for a glass of ice to wrap my hand around! Gluttonous of me? Sure, but by now it was past 7:45 and I'd been waiting for my dinner for an hour. When the food finally did come, it was fine. We ordered a few desserts and they, too, were good. All told, we were there for 3 hours because of the entree delay. It was a bit embarrassing as I'd chosen the restaurant and my boss and coworkers were there. I didn't think it reflected well on my choice!

This was my third visit. The first time I just had appetizers. I went back a second time and was blown away by how great the food was. I went back for dinner on a Saturday night. I ordered the Halibut and my husband ordered the Short Ribs. Both meals were terribly disappointing. They were over cooked, dry and devoid of any flavor. Our server was very nice, but got very busy and we were left waiting at the end. For the price, I don’t think it is worth another meal.

This was one of the worst dining experiences I have had. Food so salty could not eat -short ribs dry and salted way too much. Salmon belly inedible. Fortunately they didn’t charge for 1 entree. Cocktails good but they had only one bartender for a crowded room long wait

Came in for the first seating at 5:30. The waiter answered a number of questions for us but didn't seem completely happy to do so. Or maybe in general he just wasn't super friendly. We ordered some bites, appetizers and a main meal. Within 20 minute the appetizers and all the main meals were on the table. No staging of the meal whatsoever. So the leisurely dinner we wanted to have together was over in 45 minutes. Since we were there to catch up, we felt we had to order tea to sit there the amount of time we wanted to talk. Eventually they put the bill on the table as a hint for us to get up. Seems like 1 hr and 45 minutes for a meal of that cost isn't an unreasonable expectation.

The food was good but small portions on the appetizers IMHO. They had a scallop appetizer for $15 that came with ONE scallop. And it wasn't even very good. Fortunately the rest of the meal was tasty. Overall I like Salt House, just not the best experience this particular time.

Love the place, have been dining there for years. Unfortunately the menu changed a bit and we got grilled shrimp salad. It wasn’t the best choice. But shishito peppers were the best!

I made reservations for this restaurant on a whim since I had been in the area the day before and noticed it. The restaurant was beautifully designed and cozy which I always like, it had an industrial/rustic feel.

The food was creative and delicious so we had fun picking new menu items and trying them out. I would highly recommend the sourdough batard, the octopus and the salmon belly. They were all winners!
