Salt House Ratings and Reviews
Salt House isn't just great food, it's a great experience. The gritty loft feel makes it extra charming - yes, there is a pretty loud atmosphere, but you can easily still have conversations without screaming at each other. Ask the Maitre for a table on the mezzanine of you want a little more private/romantic table. Wouldn't go with groups more than 5, it'll be hard to converse. Food, again, is great, no massive portions. Definitely leave room for dessert.
I've been disappointed in so many restaurants but Salt House has renewed my faith in the SF food scene. The lamb dish I had was superb! The wait staff was friendly and efficient. The only thing that took away from the ambiance was the blaring noise level but, all in all, the Salt House was a wonderful experience.
Wait staff was great, hostess is a gem. Unique appetizer choices. The entrees rocked. The New York Steak (rare, of course) sits atop my 'tastiest domestic land animal consumed' list. My wife had the Sole (which means I got half when she filled up). Finally a restaurant that realizes less is more with egg batter and Sole Dore! Energetic does not start to describe the noise level. Still worth it though for the food!
Each of us had a different fish dish. All three were just ok, not great. Fish was grilled perfectly, but was placed atop other ingredients & sauce that was basically just salty and uninteresting in spite of the beautiful presentation. The wine list had too many unfamiliar wines offering no description & the waitress was sweet and efficient, but not really helpful. Appetizers & before dinner cocktails were amazing, but overall, the meal was not worth the money we spent(alot)!
Everything we ordered was great. I loved my entree but would've been totally happy if I got my dining companion's entree. Our drinks were amazing and the wine our server helped us pick out was perfect for both of our entrees: fish and lamb. We will definitely be back soon!
Although we went during lunch time and it was busy, our service was rather slow. For example, the first time our waitress came over we told her we were ready to order but she left and didn't return for ~10 mins. I also caught our waitress looking at our table when we were done eating but she didnt come to check on us for some time. It was also pretty obvious we were done because I had my napkin covering my plate and my other 2 companions had empty plates.
From the time we sat down (reservations was at 12:30pm), we did not receive our food until ~1:15pm. We also had to flag 2 people other then our waitress to request our check since we couldn't get our waitress' attention.
The service was great - everyone was really nice and helpful (we dealt with the hostess, the bar server and the waitress). All the food was tasty, but the poutine (fries with cheese and short rib gravy) really stood out. We couldn't stop eating them. My friend really raved about the salmon.
The noise level in the restaurant is pretty much deafening...we were fortunate because I asked for a 'quiet' table....and were seated upstairs.
Just don't understand why restaurants seem intent on preventing their guests from carrying on an intelligent conversation without screaming.
WE ARE THE CUSTOMERS!
The restaurant has a great ambiance. The service was top notch. Very friendly staff and great for recommending items from their menu. The food was the true star. I have never experience so many flavors with my meal from the appetizers through the dessert everyone at the table was talking about how great each dish was and we wanted to share the dish with other people around the table because we felt that we had ordered the most incredible item on the menu. It is a great restaurant and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience great tasting food that is creative and not your usual food combinations with dining out.
The restaurant doesn't have a good choices for dine about town. They only have 2 choices for appetizer, main course and dessert. I order the salad for appetizer, pork for main course and panna cotta for dessert. The dessert taste good but the rest is just okay in my opinion. Nothing special or fancy about the dine about town. My over all experience with dine about town, I would give salt house 3 stars.
This was my third time eating at Salt House, but the first time I've had lunch here. The food was outstanding (as it has been in the past). They also have a great cocktail list, all with a unique blend and mix. The only one negative (and this was ever so slight) was that we felt a little rushed, but eating lunch during a workday I'm sure they're used to people getting in and getting out quickly.
We had dinner at the Salt House on Monday for the first time. It was a great experience from the gentleman who seated us until the last sip of coffee with dessert. The food was fun and delicious, the service was seamless and even though they were busy and the place was full, we never felt rushed.
We will definitely be looking forward to our next visit!
