A friend and i came here last Saturday. We had a reservation which was great because the place was packed! They were pretty busy but our service was unusually slow. I think we were at sort of a forgotten table. I've been here before at the bar and had a similar service speed level, so that may just be part of the charm. A great place to go for a fun and unique bar scene and the drinks are always delish!
The interior and ambiance were perfect, food was pretty good, but service was terrible! We will never go back because of the rudeness of the waitress, but if that had not been the case this place could have been a go to restaurant for us. We were ready to order more drinks and dessert but were so put off after or meal we had to leave.
Enormous whiskey list. The bartenders are constantly coming up with new concoctions. I've been back several times and often entertain out of town friends here.
My favorite place in Somerville, food is always excellent and the vibe is crucial.
Excellent food and drink, and a cozy atmosphere that invites you to stay for a while.
My son suggested this place for his 27th birthday. My husband and I, our daughter and her fiance, son and his girlfriend plus our other daughter and son all enjoyed it very much! The menu is limited but what they had was delicious. They have a big whiskey menu and many other drink choices. It was special for the occasion and my son was very happy!
Really friendly staff, great service and great food. The speakeasy vibe was very cool too. I will definitely go again.
Always enjoy coming to this restaurant. The fact that there is no obvious sign makes it seem fun, and being in the basement adds a mysterious touch. The drinks are awesome, especially if you are looking for a cocktail. And the food was great- my date has been raving about his steak tips since we've been there. Lively bar and good service, I would definitely recommend this place for a romantic date.
So Saloon is well known for it's vibrant bar scene and excellent beer/wine/whisky etc selection but where it stumbles is the food. Although I appreciate a limited menu, to find out on a busy Saturday night that they have run out 3 items on the menu is dissapointing. In fairness the chef did try and make it up to us by providing a couple of side dishes...but still. Also, service was really slow, again appreciating that it was a busy Saturday night. I would recomend going to Saloon to eat - just not at the weekend.
Loved the ambiance, food, service but not the noise.
Not an experience for a group.
Music should be lower and fewer speakers. Could not enjoy a discussion
Did not realize it was a whiskey bar so it was not really my thing. The place itself is really nice and different. The food, which we didn't have, sounded/looked really good but small menu. The drinks were too fancy as we were looking for a desert type of drink.
awesome drinks. Legit cocktails. A cool spot with nice decor. Occasionally will get filled with college kids drinking miller lite. Only had apps here but pretty solid. I think the same kitchen as foundry
I've been a fan of Saloon for years. Great drink variety, just a handful of delicious menu options, and more than enough secrecy and classic charm to know you're somewhere special.
I had no idea how good the food was. Fish is marvelous. I had swordfish, which I can never cook myself. It is difficult, it was soft and juicy, no idea how they cook!!! Absolutely delicious!
Such an unexpected surprise!
Went on a Sunday night after plans elsewhere fell through - what a find! Great secret supper club feel, really good craft cocktails and great selection of bourbon and whiskey.
Anyplace that features devils on horseback as an appetizer is bound to have some great, albeit limited, items on their menu.
Will be back again.
I went with a group to this restaurant for my friend's birthday. Great cocktails, though on the pricier side. The food is very different but great for trying out new appetizers. This place gets very crowded but has a fun and hip ambiance. Very cool place to visit in Davis square!
Saloon offers one of the nicest drink menus around, but it is pricey.
The atmosphere is very enjoyable and I like that there is no sign on the street. Some people find it hard to find, but the bar wasn't crowded at all, thankfully for us.
The waitress did a good job at handling our table of 8.
Unfortunately they were out of the cocktail I ordered and the kitchen closes at early at 10pm, so I cannot comment on cocktails and food.
My husband and I love Saloon and thought of it immediately when my brother was visiting and doing research about bars with a modern Speakeasy feel. We had an early reservation, which wasn't all that necessary for 6pm, but things picked up within an hour. The server let us take our time with ordering and dining. The drinks were great- an Old Fashioned for my brother and The Stranger for my husband. I went non-alcoholic and a delicious mocktail creation of simple syrup, lime and mint variety was presented to me.
The hors d'oeuvres were fantastic- Devils on Horseback, Fried Pickles and the Chips Benedict, this amazing Pork Belly, Egg poutine-style dish!
The entrees my husband and brother got were both fantastic (the 1/2 roast chicken and the Short Rib Pot Pie). My entree was a bit adventurous and didn't prove to be a winner... Chicken Fried Rabbit Leg- the meat was so tough, I could barely cut through any part of it! What I did manage to carve was farely bland. In the end, I sort of gave up on the dish, apart from the accompanying cheddar biscuit, kale and gravy, which were delicious. My husband assured me that he has never had any rabbit like that before.
We still love Saloon, because it really is a feast for all of the other senses, too. The rich decor isn't to miss and the lively music is just right, as well as the buzz of enjoyment from all the other patrons. We'll be back, but I'll leave the hare to chasing the tortoise...
It was very quiet with an intimate feeling when we arrived early in the evening for dinner. Service was excellent, and the food was a surprise: very good and quite original. Clearly the chef is trying. As the time passed however the place filled up and the noise level increased until it was hard for us to talk to each other. If you like lively, then go closer to 8pm. Otherwise go at 6pm. Overall it has a fairly young vibe, especially as it filled up. Clearly a local favorite.
I love the fact that it is basically hidden. Food and drinks were outstanding!
Great bar, not much of a restaurant. Make a reservation because it can get packed.
For someone my age (37), you'll definitely want to get a table as the standing room is quite crowded... but once you do... you'll feel like it's the roaring 20's - classic cocktails, energy, good balance of guys and girls, and perfect for late night bites. Love it every time!
Brick, dark wood, leather seats and a super-chill vibe. Attentive wait-staff like Shea, who helped us with our orders. NICE Whiskey selection with informed staff who can give a quality suggestion. They didn't have my Irish Whiskey of choice (Tullamore dew) but Shea knew it and gave a great suggestion of one of their Irish Whiskeys that I might like (Tyrconnell) ... and I did. ALOT. The food was quite good. My wife and I thought that the Chips Benedict (fries with pork belly and a fried egg on top) was a revelation. Like Bacon & eggs? Imagine those flavors... on FRIES. Yeah. Yummy. All in all, a nice night. Good food, good booze, good vibe. We'll be back soon. This week to be exact :)
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience! The food was delicious - Be sure to get a warm, freshly baked pretzel when you go! Extensive whiskey and bourbon list to choose from. Many creative and unique cocktails.
Dinner at Saloon was a lot of fun. Some of the tables are a bit wobbly and it can get pretty noisy later in the night, but food was really good. The Devils on Horseback appetizer is amazing, and both the steak and the duck were excellent. They also have very good drinks, but the cost adds up quick. I'd definitely go back, though.
I was from out of town. Pittsburgh, PA. Here on business visiting one of our offices in downtown Boston. A colleague suggested dinner and suggested it at the Saloon which meant either taking the subway or a cab. At first, I thought no, let's stay downtown. I am sure glad we did not. The food was excellent. The drinks are spectacular and the staff is outstanding! You have to try the appetizer Devil in the Saddle-dates wrapped in bacon with a smoky flavor along with some feta cheese. Exquisite.
We love Saloon and try to tell only cool people about it. It has the studied feel of a speakeasy, and delivers on both comfort food and throwback drinks from yesteryear.
First, you won't find it unless you know exactly where to look. (That cuts out the riff raff!)
Second, food like their spare ribs, pork collar, or spiced duck legs are mouthwatering tender and delicious.
Third, lots of drinks with rye, bourbon and even absinthe. A favorite of mine is "Steel & Gunpowder".
Celebrated my birthday there and the vibe was great from the moment we walked in: the waitstaff make you feel like they've known you forever and are happiest when you are. Ask for Sarah.
My wife and I went on a date here.
Corn bread probably the best part of the dinner. Had pieces of pork belly on it. Amazing.
Charcuterie was greeat.
Steak well cooked and salted.
Salmon was great though a little inconsistently cooked.
Tom Collins and flask of punch were great.
We had a table reserved for 10. Service was very friendly and food was great. The hostess is a riot. I really liked her. Our waitress was wonderful as well. Only complaint was that it got busy later in the evening and it took a really long time to get a glass of wine to go with my meal. I was almost done when I received it. But I realize it was very busy. Overall great experience.
My boyfriend and I went here because we found it in a Bourbon Review article. We split a couple appetizers and one entree. The beef trio sliders were awesome, cheese plate was delicious, and the beef entree was a little chewy but still tasty. The drinks list is impressive, offering bourbons we've never heard of! Highly recommend for a date night or a night out with friends.
This establishment was everything I expect, and never find, when I go out. Everything about Saloon was classic, understated, and beautiful. We were greeted by the hostess and then take to our table, nothing unusual about this first part, but then she collected our coats and hats. This may seem trivial to a lot of people but I should have to drape my topcoat on the back of a chair or waste space on the table so I can take my hat off.
We were just here for drinks and appetizers so we tried the dates stuffed with feta wrapped in bacon...these were to die for, we had to order a second plate. The sweetness of the date was barely noticeable in this savory appetizer. I normally do not care for feta cheese, especially on its own, but the feta here complemented the other flavors perfectly.
Finally, came here for their whiskey selection which is long and varied. They have whiskey from all over the globe. They also have some creative, well-made cocktails.
Had a dinner for two on a Saturday Night. It was slightly crowded but not unbearable. The server was quick and attentive. Appetizers were absolutely incredible. Lamb shank was the special that night and it was one of my favorite meals I have ever had. The cocktails are also exceptional justify a visit even if you will not be eating.
Too noisy and a young crowd. Not for a sophisticated bourbon drinker! Nice service!
I booked a reservation for eight about a week in advanced for 8pm. When we got there we had great service and by the time we left the bar crowd had arrived. They ran out of soft pretzels, which were delicious. Great food, good service. We did have a problem with the noise level and had a hard time hearing each other across the table, so needless to say my throat was sore the next day. Love going here and would definitely recommend it.
The steak and risotto were both just ok, fairly bland. We went at 9pm on a Friday and it was probably the loudest restaurant we'd ever been to. They needed at least one more waitress on to handle the packed dining area. Our waitress was sweet but service was slow with several mistakes. The cocktails were hit or miss. Likely won't be going back.
My dad was visiting so my husband and I took him to Saloon remembering how wonderful the food had been during a previous meal. The food was excellent and the waitress was great about suggesting drinks based on our preferences. We were very surprised that the scene turned very club-y/bar-y by 8:30 (there were still many people eating dinner.) The music was way too loud to enjoy the end of our dinner, unfortunately.
Great cocktails, great food, and a beautiful room. But at night it's so loud you can't hear yourself, let alone your neighbor.
We went on a Saturday night at 8:30. Fabulous food, wonderful cocktails and a large variety of beers, wines and liquors. The waitstaff was great, very attentive and knowledgeable; fun bar scene and good music but overall too noisy and music a little too loud; we were a group of 8 and couldn't really have a conversation unless it was a person close to you. Difficult to talk and hear over everything. Overall GREAT and I'll definitely go back but perhaps with a smaller group and during the week when it's not as busy and loud?? Highly recommend.
Quality of the food was very inconsistent, quantities were poor value.
The deconstructed cheesecake was a pathetic joke.
Awesome. Period. Great whiskey selection, great service.
