Located in the heart of Davis Square, Saloon is inspired by the iconic New York City pre-prohibition establishment. With a focus on brown liquors and local beers, Saloon calls reference to a time when drinks were serious and uncomplicated. In the early 1900s, the saloon was the standard institution prominently found on street corners across major cities in young America. The bar program at Saloon features whiskey-based cocktails inspired by the era's classic drinks.

Saloon Ratings and Reviews
Going to see a movie at Somerville Theater so wanted to grab a bite and a beverage in the Davis Square area. Saloon had OpenTable availability so we grabbed a table. Not disappointed. Really interesting subterranean experience. Great décor. A little dark and the background music level was a little too high for easy conversation. Super cocktail and beer menu. My wife loved her cocktail. Decent wine selection. We stuck to the appetizer menu. Everything we tried was very good. Highly recommend the pork belly tostada. Charcuterie and cheese plates were very nice. Creative yet affordable. Our server was very nice and attentive despite a sudden rush of diners. Good date night venue. Would like to go back and hang out at the bar.
After making reservation through OpenTable (and receiving the confirmation) and calling earlier in the day to confirm and see about modifying it, we arrived at our reserved time to a non-existent reservation. They reassured us they would be able to find a place for our large group regardless and asked us to wait "10-15 minutes" while they made it happen. After waiting 45 minutes past our original reservation time, we again inquired how much longer it would be or if it wasn't looking possible so we could just find another place to eat that night. We were again assured it was nearly ready and offered free appetizers to make up for our wait. Surprisingly true to word, within 15 minutes of the second inquiry we were seated. Unfortunately, the service and food were equally disappointing as the reservation service. No free appetizers were ever offered as promised by wait staff, they had run out of several dishes by the time we were able to order, the food we did manage to order was unusually subpar (I've had better steak at Texas Roadhouse which is saying something...), the appetizers we did order took 45 minutes to come out (with our meals and which we received almost exactly two hours after the reservation was set for) and our waitress was no where to be found through most of the 90 minute meal (the birthday girl managed to be able to order just a single drink through the dinner). Being frustrated and thoroughly ready to leave after the main meal was finished and again no waitstaff were in sight to order more drinks or food dishes, we had to go to the wait staff station to request our check. This was a thoroughly disappointing night and way to celebrate someone's birthday. Would whole-heartedly not recommend for meals... at least on the weekend.
Had a big group --- was originally 8 but turned to 7 --- and after having gone to Saloon four times before this visit for drinks /only/, I will probably visit again for food /only/. Service was attentive, no BS. Drinks were strong (duh, this is Saloon) and genuinely perfect. Apps were delicious and meals were cooked to perfection. Great job, Saloon!
The food just isn't very good. The steak, for 29, was fine but small and a quarter fat. The chicken was overcooked. The bread on the cheese plate was dry and they covered that up by pouring olive oil on it--not worth eating. The ambiance is very cool. The cocktails were not good either and my husband's came in a glass chipped all around the edge. The place was not busy except for a Christmas party breaking up as we arrived. Don't see this place lasting very long.
Definitely worth checking out! Good cocktails, great whiskey selection and nice menu selection. We had caramelized Brussels which were amazing!! Peppercorn crusted steak was cooked to perfection. Being a Friday night, the energy level was to be expected, but it was hard to carry on a conversation. Happy we went!
Everything was spot on. The food was prepared well. Loved the fall salad with squash puree. Probably the highlight of my food experience. The fried chicken was properly cooked, but needed salt. The apple slaw was bland. I'm not a smoker, so nothing was preventing my tastebuds from experiencing the food. I was disappointed in the flavor of the dish though everything else was great. My friend had a burger and fries--crushed it. Server was excellent. I'll definitely be back, but I think I'll ask for salt and pepper for the table in case it's a more common thing. I give it 5 stars overall because it was an A level experience even if I wanted better flavor from my dish.
I absolutely love Saloon. The service is always great, from the host to wait staff. The drinks are always made with fresh juices and are perfectly balanced. The food is always on point and satisfying. I highly recommend this speak-easy gem in the middle of Davis square.
We came here with my son who lives nearby. It was hard to find this place even when we were standing in front of it. It was very loud and noisy, but the food was delicious. I would definitely come here again, maybe on a night that isn't quite so lively. It was hard to carry on a conversation.
Went to Saloon for a belated birthday dinner. Had read a ton of reviews about the quality of the drinks but not too many reviews about the menu. Luckily, we were pleasantly surprised with our dinner. My husband had the spicy fried chicken, which was delicious. I had the salmon in curry sauce, which was also very tasty. My only complaint about our appetizer, the mission figs and chorizo, was that is was too small. It was so good, we just wanted more! I would recommend Saloon as a great spot to meet for drinks, or to have a casual, but quality meal. Would definitely go back!
I have been to the saloon many times and I always have a good time. I am constantly recommending the place and I have always had a good experience with wait staff etc. This night was different, we struggled to get good attention from the waitress and the music was incredibly too loud and could not hear anyone in our group of 7. I will try and give it another shot, but I will be hesitant.
Hadn't come here in a while. Used to love this place, but this time, the music (which was a genre seemingly incongruous to the decor, menu, etc. of the restaurant) was so very loud that I had to shout to my dining partner and had to ask her to repeat herself several times. Entirely ruined what would have otherwise been a pleasant dining experience. I'm disappointed in what used to be such a interesting restaurant, and I don't expect I'll be returning any time soon. :-(
I went to dinner expecting to enjoy a decent meal, but , as soon as we sat down we were told"all we have are burgers"!! I wouldn't have gone there if that was written anywhere , not on the website, nothing mentioned about a limited menu!! Left hungry and disappointed !!
What sets Saloon apart is the ambiance and the bourbon. Once you find the place (look for the little white globe light) and head down the stairs, you are deep in the belly of an old-school bourbon bar. Dark wood, dark leather, and dark spirits abound. They don't necessarily have rare and fascinating bourbons, but they have an amazing variety of bottles you might want in your home bar, and you can try before you buy. Taste a classic Manhattan with different spirits, or love on their bespoke cocktails - the Back Disaster was full of mezcal yumminess. I go here about once a month, mostly recently to introduce a friend to what is amazing about bourbons.
We've been to Saloon a number of times, and we went again for our anniversary dinner. Every experience has been really great, especially the first one, when the director of beverage personally guided us through our whiskey flight.
We like sitting in the more enclosed area past the archway, to the right of the bar. It's a bit more intimate, although standing patrons from the bar tend to spill in there during busy times. The food is tasty - it's a small 2-page menu of comfort food and higher-end items. We loved the charcuterie board, and I had the rodeo burger for the second time, cooked to perfection with delicious truffle-parmesan fries.
The servers are fun and knowledgable, friendly and very responsive. There's a good cocktail list, lots of beer selections, and a TON of whiskey options, obviously.
Big disappointment. Chose Saloon in large part based on the menu posted on line only to discover a completely different and extremely limited food menu at the restaurant. When we asked our server if the menu was limited because it was Valentines Day she said no. She went on to say that they were aware that the online menu was different and that the issue wasn't new. No apologies, just "are you ready to order?" The good news is that one of our companions had the Open Table App and was able to book us a table at Five Horses which is around the corner and which I'd recommend. Would never recommend Saloon for anything because I felt like I was the victim of a bait and switch.
Our son recommended Saloon after he found himself there one late night. We went for my birthday and the food was absolutely delicious!!
Started off with buffalo Brussels sprouts and oysters. The oysters were sweet and disappeared in a 2 minutes. The Buffalo Brussels sprouts were outrageously delicious and would get 2 orders the next time - one just for myself.
2 of us had the steak tips which were tender, juicy and delicious.
1 of us had the scallops and they were the same - tender, juicy and delicious. The squash side was equally delicious.
1 of us had the burger - which was unbelievable!
The beer selection was excellent.
Our waitress was spot on and fun. Whole place was vibrant but not too loud so you could talk easily with your table mates.
Will definitely go back with our friends who are foodies!
I had been by for drinks and liked the place, was looking forward to having food.
When we sat I realized the menu was cut by most items (because of Super Bowl?). Our server then "miss-entered" the order so we waited an hour for 3 steak frites and chicken wings. Trying to get another drink was an effort in futility. When our food did arrive my "medium rare" was "well done" and our server didn't seem interested in asking how things were. I would have sent it back, but was starving and already embarrassed I had picked the spot.
We paid and left.
We will not return.
A friend and i came here last Saturday. We had a reservation which was great because the place was packed! They were pretty busy but our service was unusually slow. I think we were at sort of a forgotten table. I've been here before at the bar and had a similar service speed level, so that may just be part of the charm. A great place to go for a fun and unique bar scene and the drinks are always delish!
The interior and ambiance were perfect, food was pretty good, but service was terrible! We will never go back because of the rudeness of the waitress, but if that had not been the case this place could have been a go to restaurant for us. We were ready to order more drinks and dessert but were so put off after or meal we had to leave.
My son suggested this place for his 27th birthday. My husband and I, our daughter and her fiance, son and his girlfriend plus our other daughter and son all enjoyed it very much! The menu is limited but what they had was delicious. They have a big whiskey menu and many other drink choices. It was special for the occasion and my son was very happy!
Always enjoy coming to this restaurant. The fact that there is no obvious sign makes it seem fun, and being in the basement adds a mysterious touch. The drinks are awesome, especially if you are looking for a cocktail. And the food was great- my date has been raving about his steak tips since we've been there. Lively bar and good service, I would definitely recommend this place for a romantic date.
So Saloon is well known for it's vibrant bar scene and excellent beer/wine/whisky etc selection but where it stumbles is the food. Although I appreciate a limited menu, to find out on a busy Saturday night that they have run out 3 items on the menu is dissapointing. In fairness the chef did try and make it up to us by providing a couple of side dishes...but still. Also, service was really slow, again appreciating that it was a busy Saturday night. I would recomend going to Saloon to eat - just not at the weekend.
