Located in the heart of Davis Square, Saloon is inspired by the iconic New York City pre-prohibition establishment. With a focus on brown liquors and local beers, Saloon calls reference to a time when drinks were serious and uncomplicated. In the early 1900s, the saloon was the standard institution prominently found on street corners across major cities in young America. The bar program at Saloon features whiskey-based cocktails inspired by the era's classic drinks.

Saloon Ratings and Reviews
The Saloon delivers on the ambiance scale, but overall dinner value is subpar. Very expensive small drinks and main entrees with poor portion size - not a winning combination.. Four (4) scallops at $32.00 with no appreciable sides to speak of. Much better dining can be found in Davis for the money.
Food was excellent. I only put 3 stars as value because it is a pricey restaurant but excellent and worth it for special occasions. Creative cocktails and excellent liquor list with skilled bartenders. Only once in 6 times visiting has the food not been great; this was not one of those times; everything was excellent. Classy place being one of the original Boston area speak-easies. Architecture and atmosphere is very pleasing. Our experience this time was kindly waited on by two servers, one of whom very kindly offered to swap out a cocktail I tried but wasn't fond of, and suggested his favorite whiskey as soon as I looked at the list; I took him up on that and it was a good choice! Overall a very nice experience and I'm more than certain I'll be back.
Taking someone here for the first time makes you look like you’re the coolest person ever. Very speak easy vibe. Food menu is limited, but has something for everyone - we filled the table with appetizers and were perfectly happy and satistiated. Service was relatively quick and responsive, do not come here if you are in a rush - good things take a bit of time. Hero tip: order two orders of the potatoe wedges - they are that good
This restaurant is a WINNER! We were a very diverse crowd of 6. 4 Octogenarians and two mid-life boomers. Two people love spicy/ vegetarian/ some are strictly carnivores, and others enjoy well seasoned food. This place met everyone's idea for a terrific meal. We were all extremely satisfied with our dishes and I received accolades for directing this group to Saloon.
This is my 4th time there and I'm always surprised by how delicious and comforting the food is. Keep it going.
Met up with an old friend visiting from out of town. Our server was attentive an knowledgable. We ordered a second round of cocktails since the first was so good! Got a few smaller plates to share and finished everything, really great variety of rich dining options.
Open Table said they were serving Dinner till 1 am. Sadly the Dinner menu got over at 11 pm. And once we got there, they weren't so sure if they even had waiters to handle a group. Is it because we went late night ? But still Open Table said they were serving dinner till 1 am. Otherwise I would have booked a proper dinner place else where. My rating 2/5 for misinformation.
Went for a 30th birthday based on the extensive whiskey selection. The birthday person was ecstatic! The food far exceeded my expectations... would go again in a heartbeat. The only negative was that he asked for two beers off their list and they were out of them both.
Friendly service, got a little slow when business started rolling in. Very good beer selection with thoughtfully curated drafts readily available. Small bite options were a little problematic as one of our dining party has celiac disease and another keeps kosher, limiting our options, but we had enough and were satisfied with what we had. Noise level made conversation a little challenging, and the low-lit ambiance makes for an atmospheric hangout, but not necessarily the easiest place to read a menu.
We have been to Saloon several times, and it's usually pretty good (especially the cocktails), but variable in food quality. We had an enjoyable experience this time and there was nothing wrong the food, but we couldn't help noticing that it's awfully easy to run up a bill that's more than when we get a great meal at a fine dining restaurant.
Environment was cool, speakeasy, trendy vibe but not overwhelming at all. Food and Drinks were delicious. Menu could have been a little bigger but everything we had was fantastic so more nitpicky than anything.
The service was some of the best I've ever had/seen and Ive worked in the F&B/hospitality industry my entire career. The server was available whenever we wanted but not pushy in anyway. Also very honest with his recommendations.
I highly recommend based on my experience.
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday, since he's really into whiskey. The hostess was really accommodating and let us sit in a more intimate seating area (since it was really quiet that night!)
The drinks/cocktails were SO good, we loved the speakeasy vibe, the red leather cushions, and the dark lighting. The oysters were a bit odd-tasting--I've had SO much better, but the ribeye + chicken milanese were worth the order!
We had a wonderful night, though, and I'd go back!
The food here was outstanding. It is a great dark ambiance in a speakeasy/saloon style restaurant and cocktail bar. The drinks and food were outstanding and I would recommend it for a date or a get together with friends. If you're looking for a bright, open ambiance, this is the wrong place.
I took my boyfriend there for St Patrick's day and he was just as amazed as I was, it was our first time and the atmosphere was great and the history behind Saloon and it being one of the first pre prohibition bars in Massachusetts was amazing. Also they have over 200 different selection of whiskey which was great. We will be coming back with our friends.
Hard to enjoy a birthday dinner with family and friends when the bouncer won't let the birthday girl in because her ID expired on her birthday. Would have totally understood were it a 21 year old or college kids. But we're in our 30s - our 60 year old mother was with us. It was just ridiculous. We won't be back.
Interesting, cool space. Very nice place for a get together with special friends or those you want to be special friends with. Dinner entrees were good, but not great. I think if I go again I would just get a couple of appetizers from the relatively limited menu. Cocktails and drink menu was outstanding.
Complaints - the place was very dark (really hard to read the low contrast fine print menu) and there was basically no cell service down there. How about some wifi or a cell repeater?
This place has a fantastic burger. Try the fantastic burger. It's fantastic.
The wifi doesn't work, but I think that may be intentional. They have no TV's and no cell service. The wifi network exists and you can connect to it, but it doesn't have access to the internet. I think they're trying to force people away from their tech - which is laudable. I just feel like I'm missing an arm sometimes.
