Five Horses Tavern - Davis Square
The Table at Season To Taste
. Enter through a sleek wood door underneath the blinking Davis Square Theatre sign.
Food was superb - braised pork shank was the best!! As the bar/restaurant filled up, the noise level was too loud to hear across the table. Servers were very busy yet helpful.
We celebrated our Anniversary here after a co-worker recommended. We loved the vibe and the food. When we arrived for our 6:30 reservation we were seated promptly and the space was quiet - the longer we were there the more crowded it got. By the time we left at around 8:30 pm the place was packed. Our food was spectacular and the cocktail menu was really interesting. I'm 13 weeks pregnant and the bartender was really nice about making me mocktails so it felt authentic. Definitely, recommend.
What a cool place! The menu was small, but everything we had was delicious and filling. AMAZING cocktail and whiskey list.
Awesome location and great ambiance. The room is cozy and inviting. The drink menu is amazing if you like whiskey and bourbon. The food is ok but the menu is small but with the right set of options. This place is all about the drinks.
Menu is limited but good, food wise not ideal or designed for vegetarians or pescatarians, but overall a really fun basement dwelling with an extensive drink menu. Cool red booths, but lots of hard surfaces and very dark. It is super loud post 7pm. We were there for St. Patrick's day most recently and it was too loud, not enough staff, took over 10 minutes to be recognized and served water, had to ask for it. Once the server did attend to our table he was great. The vibe is fun, not good for children or teens or if you want to have a conversation without shouting. Will go back, just not on St. Patrick's day- if you want rowdy on this holiday- go! It's Davis Square, Boston, a great place to celebrate with friends.
cool atmosphere, early west. Great food. Have only basic liquors no Southern Comfort
Can never get enough of the Arancini and the selection of whiskey. Wow!
Ambiance was so fun! The speakeasy setup, the old dark wood work, antique mirrors pairs perfectly with the traditional prohibition craft cocktails. Get the flask for two from the bar great way to stay on theme!! The food was also spot on. Definitely coming back!
Great ambience and bar setting. Food is yummy but on the heavy side - would be nice to see fresh veggies/salads and/or lighter appetizers on the menu. Staff friendly and welcoming.
I'm already a whiskey lover but the things they do with their whiskey in cocktails can make even non-whiskey lovers appreciate it!
Food and ambiance were both great!
I entered special (birthday) instructions when I made the OpenTable reservation, but they were not implemented at the restaurant. That was disappointing, but everything else was great.
Everything was amazing the drink and food and ambiance were great but the music was too loud
bustling speak-easy style bar with extensive liquor library and short to-the-point bar food menu. Oysters were very fresh
Cocktails were decent. Food was phenomenal. I got the rodeo burger. Will definitely be back.
Make sure you know where you are going, this basement restaurant was hard to find. Limited but interesting menu. burger and fries were very good as was humus. service was horrible. Place was 1/2 empty, we had 4 people help us - all were slow.
The Saloon delivers on the ambiance scale, but overall dinner value is subpar. Very expensive small drinks and main entrees with poor portion size - not a winning combination.. Four (4) scallops at $32.00 with no appreciable sides to speak of. Much better dining can be found in Davis for the money.
Food was excellent. I only put 3 stars as value because it is a pricey restaurant but excellent and worth it for special occasions. Creative cocktails and excellent liquor list with skilled bartenders. Only once in 6 times visiting has the food not been great; this was not one of those times; everything was excellent. Classy place being one of the original Boston area speak-easies. Architecture and atmosphere is very pleasing. Our experience this time was kindly waited on by two servers, one of whom very kindly offered to swap out a cocktail I tried but wasn't fond of, and suggested his favorite whiskey as soon as I looked at the list; I took him up on that and it was a good choice! Overall a very nice experience and I'm more than certain I'll be back.
Taking someone here for the first time makes you look like you’re the coolest person ever. Very speak easy vibe. Food menu is limited, but has something for everyone - we filled the table with appetizers and were perfectly happy and satistiated. Service was relatively quick and responsive, do not come here if you are in a rush - good things take a bit of time. Hero tip: order two orders of the potatoe wedges - they are that good
Overall great, love the ambience. Pork shank was amazing. Great cocktails.
always love the atmosphere even though it can get busy and loud at times
A phenomenal speakeasy style bar! Went for the drinks but would come back again for the food. A fantastic experience all around!
Food was good but overpriced, cocktail was only OK (and $16!) We love Saloon for drinks with friends, but will probably not return for a dinner date
Go here a lot the food is always great and it takes you to another place with the décor and mixologists!
Saloon has gotten a bit more hit or miss lately. Some of our group's cocktails were good while others were a little off. Food was delicious as always, if overpriced, as always. Service was incredibly slow and the server offered no apology or explanation.
This restaurant is a WINNER! We were a very diverse crowd of 6. 4 Octogenarians and two mid-life boomers. Two people love spicy/ vegetarian/ some are strictly carnivores, and others enjoy well seasoned food. This place met everyone's idea for a terrific meal. We were all extremely satisfied with our dishes and I received accolades for directing this group to Saloon.
This is my 4th time there and I'm always surprised by how delicious and comforting the food is. Keep it going.
Went here with some friends for my birthday it was a nice atmosphere, but louder than I wanted. Also maybe slightly over priced , but normal for area... food and drinks were good
Met up with an old friend visiting from out of town. Our server was attentive an knowledgable. We ordered a second round of cocktails since the first was so good! Got a few smaller plates to share and finished everything, really great variety of rich dining options.
Open Table said they were serving Dinner till 1 am. Sadly the Dinner menu got over at 11 pm. And once we got there, they weren't so sure if they even had waiters to handle a group. Is it because we went late night ? But still Open Table said they were serving dinner till 1 am. Otherwise I would have booked a proper dinner place else where. My rating 2/5 for misinformation.
The service we received was phenomenal! The sous chef even came and sat next to my husband to discuss his dietary needs.
The food was delicious and the ambiance was wonderful.
We will definitely be back.
Love Saloon. Great food, lovely bourbon/whiskey selection, killer old fashioneds (and other cocktails), and knowledgeable staff.
Went for a 30th birthday based on the extensive whiskey selection. The birthday person was ecstatic! The food far exceeded my expectations... would go again in a heartbeat. The only negative was that he asked for two beers off their list and they were out of them both.
Second time going to Saloon, and it was just as amazing as the first time. Our server, Joe, was pleasant and provided excellent service. It was super loud, but also a Saturday night so expected. Definitely going back.
Great service, not rushed, good food, fun birthday celebration
Friendly service, got a little slow when business started rolling in. Very good beer selection with thoughtfully curated drafts readily available. Small bite options were a little problematic as one of our dining party has celiac disease and another keeps kosher, limiting our options, but we had enough and were satisfied with what we had. Noise level made conversation a little challenging, and the low-lit ambiance makes for an atmospheric hangout, but not necessarily the easiest place to read a menu.
We have been to Saloon several times, and it's usually pretty good (especially the cocktails), but variable in food quality. We had an enjoyable experience this time and there was nothing wrong the food, but we couldn't help noticing that it's awfully easy to run up a bill that's more than when we get a great meal at a fine dining restaurant.
Clean, friendly restaurant. I like the speakeasy feel, but the place is a little darkly lit. Can use some candles on the table or something like that. Romantic, though, that's a plus.
Longest bourbon, rum, and whiskey menu I've ever seen.
Excellent service! I called a few moments ahead of my reservation, asking if I could push it back 30 minutes, they were entirely able to accommodate me and very nice, very understanding about it.
Environment was cool, speakeasy, trendy vibe but not overwhelming at all. Food and Drinks were delicious. Menu could have been a little bigger but everything we had was fantastic so more nitpicky than anything.
The service was some of the best I've ever had/seen and Ive worked in the F&B/hospitality industry my entire career. The server was available whenever we wanted but not pushy in anyway. Also very honest with his recommendations.
I highly recommend based on my experience.
Excellent food, atmosphere, and service.
