About Saloon Restaurant
Entering the Saloon, a family owned restaurant since it opened in 1967 is a bit like stepping into Philadelphia's past. Dark oak paneling, shiny brass and authentic local antiques create a warm congenial and casual atmosphere. The choice of two comfortable dining rooms each with its own vintage bars make dining and conversation a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Both bars feature a delicious and moderately priced food menu. The menu is Italian with seafood specials such as grilled octopus and dover sole. Saloon steaks and veal chops are legendary. Many prefer a plate of fried long hot peppers to compliment the steaks. All desserts and gelatos are made on the premises daily. The Saloon is a Philadelphia neighborhood bar and restaurant with a national reputation. And the parking is FREE!

Saloon Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
A restaurant with character, lots of old times, fun things. Wait staff was good but we were often asked twice .. Did we want a drink, did we hear the specials, etc. food was very good, presentation not so great.
Glad we tried it, though! Tiramisu was fantastic!
I love the Saloon and bring clients all the time. However this time I asked for a table by a window or somewhere that a business lunch meeting could be held so it was a little quieter. Although there were a few tables near front windows and tables that would be more out of the way we were put at a table right in the middle of the noisy first floor dining room. My guest arrived before me and were already seated when I got there so it was too late to ask to be moved. Every other thing at the Saloon is always fabulous but I was a bit disappointed by this after making a specific request.
Iconic South Philly spot. Great food and extremely attentive surface. One exception was the birthday fail. Specified b-day when I reserved, even called to ask, but I didn't mention anything while there and neither did they. Maybe I also feel that the dollar signs listed on Open Table are low -- this is definitely a 4 $-sign place...
First of all, we love The Saloon but not just for the food (which is very good but not great). We do not live in Philadelphia but have a son who does. This is our 4th visit to the restaurant and the reason we keep coming back is the service, the staff and the beautiful restaurant itself. We have consistently been treated extremely well and have every reason to believe all who visit will be treated likewise. It is rare to find such a great staff. Our hat is off to whoever trains them.
One hint, try and eat on the second floor, it is spectacular.
They were very accommodating, we were running late from city road closings and they allowed us later than reservation. They had a large list of specials and a very nice menu selections. The food was great( we have been there many times never had a bad meal). We were celebrating an Anniversary and we had great table to have quite conversation. We had appetizers to dessert. Save room for dessert large selection to chose from. We even took another home because they looked so good.
We had a bad meal at Saloon about 15 years ago. Decided to try it again. Have to say they are consistent.
- Water guy had trouble remembering that one of us ordered Pellegrino. 4 times! Must have given our bottle to another table so then tried to fool us by filling the bottle with club soda and passing it off as Pelligrino. Really?
- Wine list lists 2015 vintage. Brings up 2014. That’s all they have. It’s not quite as good vintage. Waiter tries to ridicule us by our preference for wanting the “newer wine” that was on their shockingly limited list.
- Waiter brought the wrong entree. Kept the rest of the four waiting 10 minutes til the 4th entry was served.
- Also brought the wrong appetizer. Waiting, more waiting.
Don’t even need to discuss the overcooked, oversalted food or unfriendly attitude.
This was my first time in many years and I was really looking forward to the meal. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Actually, three people ordered the same dish plus different salads.
The Saloon was cozy, great service and quiet enough to have a conversation.
Actually, the next night we called to make arrangements to pay for our kid’s dinner and Evan was very professional and accommodating .
This was the first visit to Saloon for my wife and I and we will definitely return. The interior is very cool and feels like you are in an old-time movie.
Service was very attentive without being intrusive. Was impressed our waitress Rachel knew the huge amount of specials by heart without a cheat seat.
I had chicken with hot& sweet peppers. Very tasty dish with just the right amount of heat. My wife got the eggplant. She said it was good but not great. Eggplant was done right but tomato sauce was too sweet for her taste. We both got Saloon salads which had avery tasty dressing and the right amount of fontana cheese. One minor complaint was at $13 it was a bit expensive. We felt both of our entrees were priced fair.
The place has extensive wine and mixed drink offerings. We got Santi Pinot Grigio which was perfect for our meals.
For dessert we shared a mixed fruit cobbler with vanilla gelato. Excellent finish to an excellent meal.
Will be back!
It is an outstanding neighborhood restaurant. One with a long history of consistently high marks for excellent service and food. The only downside is even with reservations there is typically a significant wait. However it is highly worth the wait. Bon-appetit!!
My second time at this Bella Vista institution. Food is superb. Service fast and discrete. Ambiance, well, it's The Saloon. Everyone is having a good time, the walls and ceiling are hung with all kinds of old signs, clocks, an old coffee mill, etc. Lots of stained glass lights, carved wood beams, gorgeous bar. You can happily spend a couple of hours here. It's a little pricy but worth it.
