About Salam Restaurant
Whether grilled on a kebab, baked in a meat pie, or mixed with pine nuts and bulghur wheat as kibbeh, lamb is the cornerstone of the cuisine at Salam Café, where it excels in all its iterations. The menu is primarily Syrian and Lebanese, a sampling of which can be ordered as Maza, a complete meal of appetizers: standards like tabbouleh and falafel along with less traveled fare like white Syrian cheese and sfeeha, tasty pita pizza topped with cheese, vegetables, or ground lamb.

I still love this place and have recommended it, to friends, and on Open Table. Here are some caveats, based on a recent visit:
1. the flat bread can be too dry and crisp (although the restaurant will bring more bread, this takes time.
2. One of us asked for olive oil for the flat bread, and the oil did not taste fresh.
3. The restaurant seems to have a small staff, so customers should plan accordingly. When the restaurant is more than half full, it can take a while even to get the main course, appetizers, or a glass of wine. (Plan accordingly. Going early helps.)
Still, the 3 of us agreed that the food was worth waiting for. The restaurant was mostly quiet.
This was ou r third visit to Salam, and they never disappoint. The food was great as usual, and ambience was awesome as well. It is always a pleasure to be able to sit and not have to yell at the rest of your party at the table. Always a pleasure to visit Salam.
Best kept secret in Manhattan. Excellent all around. Cozy, lovely atmosphere. Delicious, authentic food. The lamb and curry dishes are the best the city has to offer. The best vegetarian options next to fish and meat in a restaurant. Wine list and beer list are small but great options. Also short but great list of unique cocktails that complement the dishes. Service is fabulous and friendly. It's family friendly because it's not a bar scene, but it's also a romantic atmosphere with lovely middle eastern music playing. Great for a casual dinner with friends or business as well. Family owned and run! Besides the extras - it all comes down to the food. The food is fantastic- and great value.Wonderful established village neighborhood go to!
I was at Salam twice last week, both times it was quiet, which my friends and I greatly appreciated. The couscous royale, which I ate on the first visit, is spectacular, and although I'd wanted to try something else on the second visit, I'd been dreaming about that couscous and couldn't stop myself from ordering again. The others loved their meals, too. The pita is a little tough by the time it is served, but that's a minor complaint given the overall quality of Salam's food. If you read my reviews, you may wonder about my high ratings: I choose my restaurants carefully, for their food, service, and sound level (I like quiet),
I truly enjoyed my experience here. The restaurant is spacious yet cozy, the food was wonderful and the servers were lovely. Pita bread was a little stale but that is my only complaint and not a deterrent at all. I will visit again and often as there is so many amazing things on the menu and I won't rest until I've tried them all! Highly recommended. :)
Salam has been around for a while, and it hasn't changed much, so it can seem a little dated, but it sustains itself as a very solid restaurant. The menu is long and the food is good. Service is unobtrusive and, well, serviceable. It's a very fine thing to have Salam in the neighborhood
We enjoyed the generous portions and tasty Syrian food here with straightforward, direct service. The salad with cucumber, tomatoes and olives was exceptionally good and the yellow curry with potatoes and chicken just spicy enough. My spouse loved their merguez sausages (the best he's had). We will return!
This is one of the very few restaurants left that is quiet, with charming ambiance and good, reasonably priced food. It is family-run, with a few Syrian specialty dishes. We ordered an appetizer and 2 entrees, but found it was too much food. Next time would do 2 appetizers, an entree and dessert.
The food here is very tasty, but the service really leaves something to be desired. My friend and I met for an early dinner and we were basically the only patrons in the restaurant when we arrived and the waitress really made us feel like we were putting her out by being there. The food is really good though and its very well priced. Plus its a quiet place to catch up, so I'd go back and I would definitely eat there again. However, if they had some friendlier wait staff it would really make a difference!
My friend and I went to Salam on a Saturday night. It was at 50% capacity. There was no manager and only two servers managing the whole scene. Needless to say, it took forever to get the littlest of the things. The final nail was when we had to wait for 30 mins! to get out dessert. We finally got up and paid the bill at the counter. The food is okay, but nothing spectacular to rave about. You have better Mediterranean restaurants in NYC.
The atmosphere with mosaic tables, eastern decor but not overly done. The food is flavorful, fresh and generous. We were three at the table and shared pita bread and hummus for appetizer and then had Chicken Couscous, Lamb Kufta with vegetables and basmati rice and Lamb Tagine with a side of Couscous. The food was wonderful, with vegetables that were cooked but still had a slight crunch, not cooked to mush or raw as so many other restaurants present. We have been here many times through the years and it still is a go to restaurant. The waitperson and front of the house is the wife of the chef and she was attentive without hovering and amazingly handled the entire restaurant herself with one bus person. This included a large private party in a separate area. We were amazed. This restaurant is a winner.
Generally when I eat at Salam it's with one friend and we walk out feeling so stuffed. The portions are generous and there are so many interesting things to try. This time we were a group of 5 and we got to sample several appetizers and a few main dishes. Delicious! And the service was attentive without being intrusive.
The knowledgable waiter helped. I wish I'd remembered to ask for a table against the wall (they were taken). Sitting at a table in the middle of the restaurant feels exposed and a bit unpleasant, but that said--the restaurant is quiet and the food acceptable. A better table would have felt more romantic. I do not recommend the deep fried onion appetizer, which although tasty (in a fast-food sort of way) was unacceptably greasy.
This was my first visit to Salam but it won't be my last. We had four different dishes and each one was excellent, exquisitely spiced and super tasty. The lentil soup was to die for, the chicken bastilla, lamb with coriander and the Macdool (spelling) were out of this world. One friend who never takes leftovers asked for the half bastilla she didn't eat, to be packed.
