Still the freshest and best sushi in the Twin Cities!
Happy hour was inexpensive, but the sushi was disappointingly small
We enjoy trying new menu items every time we eat there. Also love the daily specials.
We always go for family birthdays and the service and food never disappoint!
Very nice time.
Great place to go if you like sushi but your partner doesn't, or vice versa
We were disappointed with the service, we were celebrating a birthday and our waiter did not come back to inquire if we wanted another drink or a refill on the hot tea. The food was great as always but the service we below par. We have had much better experiences at Sakana prior to our dinner on 3/21/18.
Very poor, waiter was the best thing at the restaurant. No one could figure out how to give us credit for our visit. On another occasion they charged our credit card for two tables, hot food not hot yet greasy and rest was bland.
We only had sushi and Udon, so I can't speak to the broader menu. I will say they have an unusual mix that gives far more options than the typical Japanese/sushi joint if you have someone in your group who isn't a Sushi lover. For the Sushi lovers, our groups reaction was "good, not great". The presentation was very good. The selection very good. The flavors were good, but not quite what we've seen other places. All in all a very good meal but not "special ocassion" level.
I had made reservations at 6:30pm on a Saturday and once my boyfriend and I got there, they were super busy and we had to wait an additional 5-10 minutes for a table. I was fine with it but the waiting area was pretty small and tight, not a ton of room for all the people waiting for tables. Once we were seated, the waiter was great. He came and checked on us a few times before we decided on what to order. The food was good for the prices but beware, the ambiance of this place is LOUD. It was very lively and you could tell people were having a good time. There were parties of all ages and a few crying babies, but overall this is somewhere I would most definitely dine again!
Though the food was good. The restaurant was not ready for the evening. This small restaurant had 10 reservations for 7pm alone, with 10 others coming in every 15 minutes. They also did not have enough wait staff. We got there at 7 and did not get seated until 7:40. It was another 20 minutes before we were served drinks and about an hour later we got our food. This was not because our server was slow... the food was slow and they didn’t have enough folks working. Everything was so slow that we did not leave the restaurant until after 10. This was not because we were having such a fantastic time... it’s because we had to WAIT and WAIT and WAIT for everything. This is not the first time I had this problem here. And believe me, it’s NO BETTER at lunch.
Love this place!
The fish here us always fresh, very generous cuts (usually) as well. We frequent Sakana due to the quality of the food, and also the amazing service. We are regular diners, and the entire wait staff and owner all greet us by name (NORM!) The salmon is top notch The 'secret' menu needs to be requested to see a wider selection of special rolls. Eating at the bar is the way to go, just don't sit in my spot!
It was Christmas Eve. Service is normally very good, but this time it was not. Waited a very long time for our sushi even though it was not busy. Waiter forgot our miso soup.
Holiday get together
We went there for a birthday, and had a great time. Service was very good, server was knowledgeable, explained a few menu items and a special which we did get and it was excellent. Four of use had different melas from sushi rolls to pad thai dinners and everything was great. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a Japanese folder experience with enough menu options to satisfy the food junkie to the pickey eater.
My favorite sushi restaurant. The food is always good. It is never too loud, so you can actually talk to the people you're with.
We love trying new sushi restaurants. Unfortunately this was just a bit underwhelming. The staff did not educate us or ask us if we had dined there before. We typically spend $100 + on sushi and enjoy indulging on various different rolls. These were just okay. Nothing to write home about.
I was here once before. Met a friend for Happy Hour earlier this year. It was GREAT! She has been back since and brought her husband, but I haven't been able to return until this visit. So, first time for my husband. (Needed to use my Groupon since it was expiring that day!) I told him that the rolls are out of this world. (I don't think he believed me since I am not generally a "roll person!") Anyway, we ordered the "Sushi & Sashimi for two" upon consulting with our waiter Matt. We were not disappointed! Also, since the Saki is only served cold or hot, we didn't know what to get (since we usually order what is recommended for room temperature Saki.) Our waiter pleasantly offered to bring samples. We settled on the Pine Forest Saki served cold, which wasn't too dry or too sweet. Just right! Happy hour seems busier than the dinner hour, but without several visits can't say for sure(?) But our waiter was really relaxed and helpful. My only criticism is that they don't have Bento boxes for dinner, but there are plenty of other places to go in the Twin Cities for that. Like I mentioned earlier, this place has turned me into a roll person, and if I wanted to have Bento here, I can always do lunch! Also, lunch is cheaper than dinner, and being very much of a "working class income," the only way I can really afford dinner here is with a Groupon. But great value! And Happy Hour and lunch here is more than affordable. Love it!
I invited friends to join me for dinner--my husband and I have enjoyed several meals at Sakana. I ordered what he usually orders which is a pineapple stir fry served in a half of a fresh pineapple. I was surprised when my meal came in a bowl and made with canned pineapple. I should have said something at the time, but since I was with friends new to the restaurant, I let it go. I think I should have been told the meal was different than the menu and/or compensated for a dish made with canned and not fresh fruit. My meal was still good and my friends loved their choices, but mine was just not exactly what I had ordered.
Extremely prompt. Probably a little too much so. Appetizer came out within maybe 2-3 minutes of ordering sand another 2-3 minutes until main course. Hard to complain about being too prompt, but it was. Didn't seem to bee rushing us out, but the pace was a bit much. Other tables definitely lingered and socialized, so maybe just me. Waiter was nearly perfect in terms of being attentive, knowledgeable, and present but never overbearing.
Great food for the price. I highly recommend the Bento box for lunch.
Great waiter who was very attentive....Mitch was his name. We have been here approx. 4 times in the last 3 months and it is always consistent and very good. The sushi is fresh and the entrees are sizable
Not good by any means. fried rice was bland and not fried to brown. white in color. pad thai was smelly like dead fish and had soggy noodles. sesame chicken was tough and chewy. portions were small. Will not be going back any time soon.
My wife and I really enjoyed the sushi and the spare rib appetizer. I also was pretty impressed by the range of red wines. The only mild disappointment was my wife's Kobe beef dish, which was a little overcooked. The food and wine are both pretty reasonably priced. All in all, a very nice neighborhood place for us, and a place I could recommend driving to as well.
The service here was horrible. The staff were not genuine and took a long time to assist us in ordering. When I arrived, no one waited me until five minutes after. The waitress didn't even lead me to the table. Staff were not very professional. They were on their phones and watching T.V
Mom treated the family to a Japanese dinner and Sakana made it special. Everything from the summer roll appetizers to the sushi was outstanding. The chef's choice of sushi for the table was superb. Mom raved that the rice was prepared expertly and the fish was very fresh. The Spicy Mango Shrimp and the Miso Cod was enjoyed by the non-sushi eaters. Service was spot on, friendly, knowledgeable, and timely.
Excellent sushi!! All we ordered was wonderful. The Yum Yum roll was perfect - we got two. :)
Servers need to be improved - should be more friendly. They appear to be arrogant
My husband I had dinner here on a Saturday evening. Cozy little sushis spot. Rolls were very good, want to go back and try more specialty rolls as there were many unique ones on the menu. Our server was fantastic. He was friendly and efficient. Stopped by and introduced us to their new sparkling saki with a free shot. Would try more of those as well. Specialty drinks are a little spendy. Will be back.
Hands down THE BEST SUSHI IN THE TWIN CITIES. We've been to Sakana several times and we've never been disappointed. Ask for the forbidden sushi roll menu! The chipotle roll is delicious!
Love the fresh food and clean atmosphere at Sakana!
Second visit. Sushi rolls are great! Pad Thaiis solid. Lots of different SE Asian specialties
Great food, small place, huge rolls, fresh ingredients.
The supreme sushi makes up for an otherwise unremarkable atmosphere. Prices are on par with the area. I can't speak for the hot food but the sushi was very well done and extremely tasty. Large menu with lots of options. Tempting to try the pad thai, maybe next time. Make reservations because seating is limited. Would return.
It's a wonderful conenient place to get together with wonerful food. The fish is always so fresh it makes eating it a real joy.
Our meal was fresh and wonderful. Happy hour pricing is great!
Dinner was terrific. Every thing serves was a work of art PLUS it tasted great!
Great food, great service
We enjoy our neighborhood sushi restaurant, it's such a treat to be able to walk to it. The food and decor are decent, their maki roll sushi lunch is a pretty good deal so that's what we go for. However, when we visited the restaurant on Saturday Dec 31, there was much confusion with the service. I called a couple of days ago to verify that the lunch deal would be available on Saturday, but the waiter at first said it was and then he said it wasn't. We protested and he eventually made it available. The web site and the menu say contradicting things about whether the bento lunch is available on Saturdays or not, so that created more confusion. Then we had to straighten out who ordered which meal. So the most recent visit had some room for improvements. That said, again we enjoy having a sushi restaurant in the neighborhood, and the experience was still pleasant enough over all.
