About Sakagura

According to Zagat, suckers for sake swoon over the "hidden jewel" near Grand Central offering a "mind boggling" selection of rice wine "categorized by region", as well as an "understated, quiet" setting reminiscent of a "private club"; those in the know say it's "secret location" (in the basement of an office building) make it better.

Great chocolate souffle, still good food, and service, before provided hot-towels, no more.

Fantastic experience. We ordered daikon radish salad, salmon and sea urchin sashimi, and beef on hot stone. Everything tastes fantastic. Sake was very good too. Only wish the server had asked us if we prefer our sake warm or cold. That would be more authentically Japanese

Great sake list. Really feels like you’re in a Japanese setting. Food was great, but portions are small to keep that in mind!

We reserved Sakagura for the thanks giving dinner and we sat at the bar.
The food was ok but far from being the best Japanese restaurant I've been to. The dessert were nevertheless spectacular!
Service was a disappointment. The waitress seemed to be annoyed by us, she never smiled once throughout the dinner and when I asked for a suggestion for the sake, she just pored me a glass without giving any options. The restaurant has a very good reputation but I think it's now a little bit overrated since the staff seems to take it for granted.

Very nice ambience. Good service; interesting menu and generally very good food, tho sashimi could be bettered.

Quite pricy, especially the sake

What an incredible meal! The black cod was unforgettable. Each and evry thing we ordered was memorable and brought my experience of Japanese cuisine to new levels of appreciation and sheer enjoyment. The fluke sashimi! The shredded beef back ribs!
Our server guided us through three different beautiful carafes of sake. New appreciation for all things Japanese. Will be coming back!

Service was great. Food was good but not amazing for the price. Sake was really good but pricey. Could probably find best value for the same price.

I went for an important business meal and had reservations. It took 15 minutes to seat us. Then, we were seated in the corner of the back room facing a filthy exit door, even though there were attractive tables in the front. When I asked if we could sit there, I was told “those are for VIPs”. Don’t go unless you are a VIP.

It remains my go-to place for the best non-sushi Japanese food in the city. The sake options are endless and of a very high caliber. Outstanding in all respects.

Amazing Sake list. Fresh, fresh sashimi.
Grilled octopus was delicious. This Japanese Pub is definitely worth the trip to an underground space to enjoy one of NYCs more affordable, fresh and tasty menus.

Had the feel of an authentic Japanese restaurant, i.e., below street level, hidden in the basement of office building through a narrow hallway...

We like family style dining, i.e., a bunch of small plates in the middle that are shared, with each diner having their own plate and bowl of rice. However, we found portions very small, so for a party of five, you have to order two of every small plate. And little things, like a very small pickle sampler with 4 carrots (each about 1/4" thick), 4 daikon pickles (each about 1/4" thick), 4 small omeboshi; when we had a party of five. A more thoughtful restaurant would have included 5.

Food was very good, but we have had similar in other restaurants for half the price. So not great value for the money. However, for a business lunch that is expensed....

Feels like you've been transported to Japan! Great food! The service is very fast and efficient. The server was very nice. The highlight for us was the eggplant dish. There are a million sakes on the menu, and the server suggested one that I really enjoyed.

Consistently great Japanese food and the best sake list anywhere in NYC. A bargain at lunch with the "lunch sets" but beware of the evening menu which has no "sets." Dinner can become very expensive by ordering a large number of tiny dishes.

It was bit loud and crowded but the ambiance of the place was good, also I really enjoyed the food but the portion I thought it was little less than I expected.

Overall, if you’re going for tasting food, I HIGHLY recommend it !

This was our first time lunching at Sakagura and we were pleasantly surprised. We would not have found this restaurant unless we read the reviews on open table. It was located in the basement, a hidden gem for authentic Japanese food. The lunch special for the week goes very quickly, apparently on 30 serving and then no more, but for $12 you can not go wrong. Too bad we were too late ordering, but got something else and it was very fresh and tasty. Would definitely go back and try dinner when in NYC or even try and snag one of the daily lunch specials.

This was my first experience at an authentic Japanese restaurant and I was very discounted, the server was very impatient with us and didn't give us much direction when we asked for help ordering, also it's so expensive for such little food that you feel like you spent a ton on just appetizer quantity food! I will hand it to them on their sake selection, that was the only thing on point!
