According to Zagat, suckers for sake swoon over the "hidden jewel" near Grand Central offering a "mind boggling" selection of rice wine "categorized by region", as well as an "understated, quiet" setting reminiscent of a "private club"; those in the know say it's "secret location" (in the basement of an office building) make it better.

Awesome food with attentive service. The only drawback was that the chocolate soufflé felt more like molten chocolate cake.

Best Sushi in town. Loved to be back at Sakagura and I'm already looking forward to be there again.

Have been going here for years and love this place. Was a bit off yesterday - service not great, food so-so - I had been raving about it so was a bit of a disappointment. That being said, everyone has an off day and I will be coming back. Get their early if you want the daily special!

We love this restaurant! This was our third time eating at Sakagura and each experience has been exactly the same -- great food, great service. Tartar octopus was fabulous, the dumplings are perfect , the fish very fresh and of course the sake options are unbelievable.

Great Sake selection along with yummy dishes.
Must go while in NYC. I’ve been coming back and forth since third day of their opening in 1996.

I ate here a year and a half ago and am glad that they have signage now. I had trouble finding it the first time but when I did it was worth it. I thought this time was just as good.
I commend the waiter we had as he suggested we switch the sea urchin for the salmon and the salmon was incredible. the sake flight are fun and tasty.

Amazing sake bar with glorious Japanese tapas. The sake selection is second to none. The food is very similar to traditional Japanese bar food, but elegant and amazing flavors and innovation. I eat here every night when I am in Manhattan. Must try on your trip.

Amazing food and attentive service. Didn’t even need to mention outright that it was a friend’s birthday; our server simply paid attention and brought us a lovely dessert with an awesome birthday presentation. Great experience and would highly recommend.

I asked from recommendation for sake. We loved the sampler sake where we could try variety of medium-dry sake among three of us. As always food was great, I highly recommend beef tataki, black cod, cold udon :)

Authentic setting, menu/dishes. Service staff’s English is below sufficient. No uni available and do not allow take out a salmon sashimi-order for my friend, which is odd! Maybe will give the dinner menu a try

My third visit, and it has been excellent every time. Love the authentic cuisine and opportunity to try things unavailable elsewhere. This time there were three special fish dishes available, fish that is usually available only in Japan.

I am 39.5 weeks pregnant and we decided to have a nice date night out before the baby arrives. Everything was spectacular. We were seated right away at a table that perfectly accommodated us and my full size belly.
Service was outstanding from start to finish and our food was delicious and impeccably timed.
Can’t wait to go back!

The food is consistently good. The space, in a basement, is a bit grim. The front staff are unnecessarily rigid and un-accommodating. They won't seat incomplete parties even when the restaurant is half empty. They seem to go out of their way to select undesirable tables when others are available.
I've resigned myself to putting up with the schtick, but it grows old....

As a person who has experience true, authentic Japanese food-- this place was very good. The sake selection was impressive. Food was pretty good. Service was good.

Only bad thing about Sakagura-- super expensive for authentic Japanese food, however I guess that was to be expected since it is right in the middle of the city.

We had read about this restaurant in a NYC newspaper guide and it was recommend by a local as a hidden gem. It definitely is hidden well and it is a nice little place in terms of decor and ambience but the portion sizes are very very very small, hence the 'tapas' label that came with the recommendation so we went to dinner expecting smaller portions but not that small. The quality of food was good but in terms of value for money I think in NYC there must be better experiences.

This is one of our favorite places in the world. You could transported to a different time and era where great sake and great food await. You simply cannot go wrong with any of their dishes. My favorites are the seaweed salad with seasme sauce. The Igidashi, the onsen tamago and the chilled tofu. I truly love this place. everytime I visit new york, I go to Sakagura.

This remains my go-to in NYC for sake. It's not a sushi restaurant but has outstanding warm stews and grilled items - all 100% Japanese in authenticity. But the sake is why you are there: the best of the best breweries are shown at Sakagura. Not to be missed.
