The Saint John Ale House offers progressive pub food in a casual, relaxed dining room, in our pub and on our waterfront patio during the summer. We take pride in knowing where our food comes from and use locally grown and seasonal produce, meats and fish from New Brunswick farmers in many of our menu items and daily specials.

Join us for a few drinks in the pub, or dine in our restaurant. If you're interested in an all around fun night out in Saint John - we look forward to hosting you!

We had a great time in the restaurant upstairs, despite our kids being a handful that night, we sat a little out of the way as to not disturb other guests. Our server was friendly, accommodating & quick with our orders. The burgers were amazing! Even had some food to go as the Chop Chop menu was just too good to pass up. We wolfed that down a few hours after the kids we're down. Then both of us ended up happily, in a food coma.

This places was very unorganized when busy. When we arrived it was not busy at all we ordered right away a it took 20 mins to get simple appetizers, 30 mins to get the water we ordered at the beginning, 2 hours to get our meal, and 20 more mins to track the guy down for a bill. People that came long after us had their food and left before us. The prices were way to high for the food you get and they charge 1.25 to 3.60 for every extra. For a few bacon wrapped scalps, a burger with a salad and the tiniest burnt steak I ever laid eyes on it cost over $80 and no drinks. For the steak meal they basically filled the plate with onions and mushrooms to make it look like a big meal and as I said it was a tiny piece if steak likely 2 to 3 oz, it was dry and burnt and I had ordered medium. The beat and goat cheese salad was a bowl of beats with a few leaves on top and the burger was ok but not for the price. Also as someone with celiac it worries me when the server is putting the wrong food infront of people as it show they are not very concerned about the contamination and not being vigilant about dietary issues. I will never be back I would not recommend this restaurant to friends.

They accommodated our large group to the best of their ability and provided great service. We appreciated the atmosphere and the sizable beer list, as well as the taste samples to make sure we enjoyed the beer enough to order a full size. The apps made a good addition to the beer-heavy evening and were very enjoyable. The atmosphere is comfortable and nice enough for an occasion, but still relaxed.

St John Ale house is a very mediocre experience. The first time I went they mixed up my salad, but I didn't realize and it was a decent salad. The second time, I came with a group and ordered the salad I should have got previously, the beet and goat cheese salad. I mentioned to our waiter since we had the same one previously that he had mixed up my order and he didn't seem to care. I then ordered the beet and goat cheese salad and when it was served, at first glance it looked good but then as I started to eat it and discovered that were only around 20 leaves of lettuce on top of a mound of large chunks of beets. There were approx. 30 large pieces of beet with goat cheese surrounding it. THIS IS NOT A SALAD. My friend who also got it and I complained and asked for more lettuce but the same waiter that mixed up my order before, said that that is just how it comes and he wasn't willing to bring us what we needed to be satisfied. Overall this restaurant has potential, but the waiter who refused to get us more lettuce and joked about our request should not have been hired, and they should learn to deliver to their customers so they can be satisfied. And as for the salad, do not under any circumstances order it.

I booked online and called to confirm my reservation of 9 as I was hosting business guests from out of town (BC and Texas). The person I spoke with confirmed that my reservation was there at 12:24pm. However, when I arrived for 1:15pm the ladies working on the boardwalk entrance advised they couldn't find a reservation, even after I explained the above to them. They were not very accommodating given that there was clearly a mix up. I had to prompt to ask for seating for our group and even still there was no real initiative taken by the hosting staff to make things any more convenient. When I asked if we could push the tables together so that our business party was not all sitting at separate tables, I was told it couldn't be done. One guest ordered the Lobster roll, but then was told it was going to be a while before it could be made. (Perhaps just unfortunate timing). The waitress took our drink order and returned with drinks in a reasonable time frame, but never came back to check on anyone to see if they wanted another while we waited for food. Even after food, drinks were empty for a bit before she came back to check on us to establish the billing breakdown.

I have always enjoyed previous personal experiences at the Ale House, but was definitely disappointed in this particular experience and will not book for business purposes in the future.

SJAH is written up in Fodor's as a 'gastro pub'. That seems to completely miss it. The menu is like any other of the pubs on the St John's waterfront and there was nothing 'gastro' about the execution of the items we had. We were greeted promptly by our server who handled drinks fine but it took almost an hour to get our appetizers. The server came back twice to apologize and assures that he was "on the kitchen", but the wait was ridiculous. Of course, they made up for it by then rushing our entrée orders so that we hadn't finished the appetizers by the time those were being placed down. Of the appetizers, the nacho-style kettle chips were indifferently prepared and the bacon wrapped scallops were over cooked. Of the entrees, the fish and chips had ok haddock but terrible chips. The quinoa salad was fine. We had much better meals within 50 feet of this place on other evenings in the same trip.

I have been to Saint John Ale House many times over the years and always have come away with a feeling of less than satisfied. I think they take advantage of their fabulous location right on the boardwalk in Saint John and forget that customers also want good food and service. Our server never brought us knives, my husband had to grab one from another table to cut a burger and I got by cutting my meal with my fork. The food was less than expected. The fries were almost cold and not appetizing, the fish was over-battered. The price at !9.50 for fish and chips suggested a better meal. The blueberry beer was good.

As a publisher I was meeting one of our authors for dinner and it was nicely done. We had a waitress and a trainee. The waitress was brusque and nit very warm. The trainee was adorable. The service was efficient and thanks to the trainee's warm personality my author who is in her 80s felt comfortable and welcome. The "trainer" had a bit of that "hurry up and get your dinner and get it over with because I'm busy" attitude and it showed. Again very nice dinner and reasonable enough and thanks to the trainee we felt like our presence was enjoyed.

Waitree was very chatty and took a long time to place our order. I actually got up to tell her that I was still waiting for my drink and food had not been ordered.
She apologized. Just saying. Friendly yes but over doing it and make customers wait not good.

Service was very slow. 1 hr for 2 orders of chicken fingers, waited 45 min after appetizer was done. Restaurant was not full, arrived at 4:15pm. Value was not great, 1 shared app, 2 chicken fingers and 2 pop including tip was $85. Although it was good, pretty steep for pub food.

The Saint John Ale House is one of my favourite "go to" restaurants. Although popular favourites are always available, the menu changes frequently to feature new ingredients that are in season and they're always expertly prepared. Great spot and knowledgable, friendly staff - you won't be disappointed.

This occasion was our Valentines Day dinner. When we arrived, we were given complimentary champagne and there were chocolate kisses waiting for us at the table. We ordered the starter olives, beet & goat salad, and the scallop risotto. Everything was unbelievably delicious. Our meal was topped off with complimentary raspberry tarts that were out of this world delicious. This is one of our favourite places to go for a real dining experience, and this occasion certainly did not disappoint.

The starters were good. But main course was awful. Sloppy salty gravy on soggy Yorkshire pudding. There was more fat and grease than any meat. Desert was good though. I wanted to like you but the main course was a huge let down. Sad.
