The cuisine at the Ale House was to its usual high standard and the service was attentive but not overwhelming.
Fantastic meal and service as always. Friends from the USA loved the seafood and the beer selection. Thanks again for accommodating my reservation special request!
Great spot for a date night, or dinner with friends. The food was amazing, the service was wonderful. We cant wait to go back 😊
Food was great and service was a A+++ as always !
Our yearly pre sip n paint night out dinner
I was very disappointed in the chop chop ramen dish. It said that it was two course and we only received one medium size bowl of ramen.
It was flavourless, my pork was over cooked and dry and left a bitter after taste. The three girls I was with were very disappointed.
Overall, the food was very unsatisfying especially paying $15.00 for the lunch.
The service was excellent, but I would not recommend the food to others.
Service was really good ! Food is always yummy! Look forward to next visit.
Food was superb- Waite staff very attentive
Pub Club, fries and beer were perfect. Service was friendly and fast. Perfect spot for lunch, dinner, or multiple drinks.
Had a lovely date night out with my husband. Service was quick and the meal was delicious.
My wife’s steak was excellent but my burger was really dry, I couldn’t finish it. I didn’t realize the Ale House asks for how you want your burger cooked so I said “cooked” well done. But either way it was really dry. Our server was great, she recommended a great beer! Overall not bad, but not my favorite meal or restaurant.
Love the Ale House - excellent food, great service!
A really nice touch is that the management listened to my pre-booking request about it being my partner’s birthday and brought out a cake with a candle in it for her. No singing or embarrassment, just a nice touch.
Really appreciated that, plus it was really good food, good value and excellent service. All round highly recommended, I will definitely return next time I’m in town.
My friend was a vegetarian and was having a hard time finding something that she could have. I hadn't really noticed this issue until she pointed out that the only thing she can really have is the Kettle Chips with no bacon. This surprised me as a lot of restaurants now cater to vegetarian's and vegan's and based on the Ale House's high-end reputation you would think there would be plenty of neat dishes that don't involve meat.
Excellent as always, my go to pub in SJ
Outstanding service from our waiter Andrew. Food was awesome and his recommendations and knowledge of the food was bang on. Will be going back again for sure!
It was great all around!
Excellent service, good food and great location right on waterfront. Always have a good experience at SJ Ale House.
Great table at the window but felt rushed. Was told another reservation was waiting half way through the meal.
Had a fabulous birthday dinner with friends at the ale house ! Thanks to Jesse and Pete for making it special !
The ambiance was nice. The good was disappointing.
Such a cozy, perfect venue for our team's Christmas dinner party! The service was excellent and the food was delicious!
Food was fine, service good, coffee excellent, seemed quiet but maybe it's like that on a Sunday eve.
I have never been disappointed in the food I received at the Saint John Ale House. The staff is friendly and helpful. I would recommend to anyone that they go at least once. I am sure they will find themselves coming back again and again!
Very friendly staff who add the extra touch making your occasion special. Generous portions, delicious food. Thank you very much!
It was an amazing first date! thank you so much saint john ale house, had lots of money left over for drinks at peppers ;)
Fantastic Chop Chop experience! Thanks for the great meal.
Meal was very delicious and creative for the chop chop menu! Our server,Devon, was fantastic and very menu-savvy! Highly recommend the Saint John Ale House!
We had a great time in the restaurant upstairs, despite our kids being a handful that night, we sat a little out of the way as to not disturb other guests. Our server was friendly, accommodating & quick with our orders. The burgers were amazing! Even had some food to go as the Chop Chop menu was just too good to pass up. We wolfed that down a few hours after the kids we're down. Then both of us ended up happily, in a food coma.
We really enjoyed our time at the Saint John Alehouse . I loved the huge beer selection and that I could get flights here . Food was amazing !!!
This places was very unorganized when busy. When we arrived it was not busy at all we ordered right away a it took 20 mins to get simple appetizers, 30 mins to get the water we ordered at the beginning, 2 hours to get our meal, and 20 more mins to track the guy down for a bill. People that came long after us had their food and left before us. The prices were way to high for the food you get and they charge 1.25 to 3.60 for every extra. For a few bacon wrapped scalps, a burger with a salad and the tiniest burnt steak I ever laid eyes on it cost over $80 and no drinks. For the steak meal they basically filled the plate with onions and mushrooms to make it look like a big meal and as I said it was a tiny piece if steak likely 2 to 3 oz, it was dry and burnt and I had ordered medium. The beat and goat cheese salad was a bowl of beats with a few leaves on top and the burger was ok but not for the price. Also as someone with celiac it worries me when the server is putting the wrong food infront of people as it show they are not very concerned about the contamination and not being vigilant about dietary issues. I will never be back I would not recommend this restaurant to friends.
They accommodated our large group to the best of their ability and provided great service. We appreciated the atmosphere and the sizable beer list, as well as the taste samples to make sure we enjoyed the beer enough to order a full size. The apps made a good addition to the beer-heavy evening and were very enjoyable. The atmosphere is comfortable and nice enough for an occasion, but still relaxed.
St John Ale house is a very mediocre experience. The first time I went they mixed up my salad, but I didn't realize and it was a decent salad. The second time, I came with a group and ordered the salad I should have got previously, the beet and goat cheese salad. I mentioned to our waiter since we had the same one previously that he had mixed up my order and he didn't seem to care. I then ordered the beet and goat cheese salad and when it was served, at first glance it looked good but then as I started to eat it and discovered that were only around 20 leaves of lettuce on top of a mound of large chunks of beets. There were approx. 30 large pieces of beet with goat cheese surrounding it. THIS IS NOT A SALAD. My friend who also got it and I complained and asked for more lettuce but the same waiter that mixed up my order before, said that that is just how it comes and he wasn't willing to bring us what we needed to be satisfied. Overall this restaurant has potential, but the waiter who refused to get us more lettuce and joked about our request should not have been hired, and they should learn to deliver to their customers so they can be satisfied. And as for the salad, do not under any circumstances order it.
Really enjoyed this pub/restaurant. Lots of local beers and foods. Seafood, meats, and many dozens of beers.
had a table of 10 out of town guest and i highly recommended the "where to eat" chicken tenders. 6 of our group ordered and 6 were unimpressed. Not as advertised. Disappointing meal as i could have taken them elsewhere.
This was the worst service we have had and we come here a lot . We seen our waiter once in the 45 minutes we were there and that was to take out order .... took him 20 minutes to give us our bill. It was not busy there at all there was us and 2 others !
Great seafood and nice window seating overlooking the Saint John Boardwalk.
Great location and atmosphere.
Our waitress was top notch and attentive even though it was a busy time.
Good food followed by a never empty beer glass!!
I booked online and called to confirm my reservation of 9 as I was hosting business guests from out of town (BC and Texas). The person I spoke with confirmed that my reservation was there at 12:24pm. However, when I arrived for 1:15pm the ladies working on the boardwalk entrance advised they couldn't find a reservation, even after I explained the above to them. They were not very accommodating given that there was clearly a mix up. I had to prompt to ask for seating for our group and even still there was no real initiative taken by the hosting staff to make things any more convenient. When I asked if we could push the tables together so that our business party was not all sitting at separate tables, I was told it couldn't be done. One guest ordered the Lobster roll, but then was told it was going to be a while before it could be made. (Perhaps just unfortunate timing). The waitress took our drink order and returned with drinks in a reasonable time frame, but never came back to check on anyone to see if they wanted another while we waited for food. Even after food, drinks were empty for a bit before she came back to check on us to establish the billing breakdown.
I have always enjoyed previous personal experiences at the Ale House, but was definitely disappointed in this particular experience and will not book for business purposes in the future.
SJAH is written up in Fodor's as a 'gastro pub'. That seems to completely miss it. The menu is like any other of the pubs on the St John's waterfront and there was nothing 'gastro' about the execution of the items we had. We were greeted promptly by our server who handled drinks fine but it took almost an hour to get our appetizers. The server came back twice to apologize and assures that he was "on the kitchen", but the wait was ridiculous. Of course, they made up for it by then rushing our entrée orders so that we hadn't finished the appetizers by the time those were being placed down. Of the appetizers, the nacho-style kettle chips were indifferently prepared and the bacon wrapped scallops were over cooked. Of the entrees, the fish and chips had ok haddock but terrible chips. The quinoa salad was fine. We had much better meals within 50 feet of this place on other evenings in the same trip.
