Sai Cafe Ratings and Reviews
Great food and the gentlemen at the sushi bar create great sushi and are cordial and keen to make sure that you enjoy your fish. It was good quality fish and skilled sushi bar chef/s.
Service was weak. Server asked if we’d like more and we replied yes and she walked away. Thankfully, one of the gents behind the sushi bar understood and sent her back. Then when I ordered uni, I asked that it would be served last and of course, it arrived before the next course. We ordered an app that arrived after a fish we ordered 10 minutes later. Lastly, she seemed to delight in asking me questions as soon as I put a piece of fish in my mouth.
In summary, the sushi bar cared greatly about us as guest and cared about the food. The servers, just stuck in a job they have no interest in and bring no enthusiasm.
Too bad, because the sushi was very good.
Had never been here before, but my sister is always bragging about this place. So we decided to have a birthday dinner here. It grew from 6people to 8 people to 13 people and they were so kind and accommodating. Jumped into action to get the table set up. Waiters/Waitresses were so kind and patient! The owner himself came by to chat. And best of all the food was AWESOME! Will def be going back!
The food was delicious and beautifully served. My only issue was we went there for my son's birthday and the first 3 things he ordered from the Sushi menu they didn't have. He finally asked them what did they have available (it was a Saturday night(. They might be better off having a daily menu rather than the complete menu and disappointed customers.
What we did order that they had available was very good.
My wife and I stopped in on a Saturday and were greeted and seated quickly. As we found out later, Jimmy the owner came to our table and explained many items on the menu and since my wife never ate sushi before, Jim explained in detail about the prep and freshness of the fish. He made several recommendations and we went with them. Everything was outstanding and my wife is a convert!
We will be back.
Just loved everything about the place.
Still the best sushi in Chicago. I've been going to Sai from day 1, over 30 years ago. Jim Bee sets high standards for his sushi and the longevity of his restaurant is proof. Large cuts of high-quality fish and seafood. Very flavorful sushi rice. Yet, prices are no more expensive than other sushi bars in the area.
Great neighborhood place. Very nice Martinis, Sake and wines selection.
The food is consistently good. We especially enjoy the excellent poke, pan fried scallops, pretty much all special rolls and noodles.
Last time was a dinner to celebrate my mom's birthday, and as always, we were very happy with everything.
My first-time visit to Sai Cafe, and I booked it based upon Open Table recommendations. First, this is not a small (nor large) restaurant, but it had much more seating than I was led to believe. The good news: Food was excellent. Sushi, rolls, apps, all were actually outstanding. The hamachi was particularly good, as were the spicy scallops. Really, though, there wasn't anything we had that was anything less than excellent. The bad news: Service was abysmal. Our wine took a bit of time to come to the table, but our apps were close to 45 minutes. Somehow, some way, our main order must have either 1. Not been put in, or 2. Lost by the kitchen; it took almost an hour and a half to be served. Furthermore, other tables around us who arrived MUCH later than we did (up to an hour) were receiving their food before us, and it was far from a full dining room. Perhaps it wasn't the server's fault, though I'll give her credit that when I brought it to her attention (far later than I should have) she responded. All in all, great food, poor service. I'll try it again sometime and see if things have changed.
As always, Jimmy never disappoints. Went with the family to celebrate my birthday. Sat at the bar for the first time in over 15 years of dining at Sai Cafe. We all enjoyed watching the master at work. My 8 and 10 year old sons want to work for Jimmy when they grow up. Ann is our requested server because she is attentive and knows exactly what to get for us. We ordered our usual fare (oyster shooters, hamachi sashimi, ama ebi, etc.) along with the fried negi hamachi maki (not on the menu) and 8 pieces of the spicy creamy tako nigiri. Jimmy also made a special roll for my youngest that had escolar, avocado, nori, massgo, topped with ikura and tobiko. Delicious! Forgot to mention that he also makes a specialty roll called "Finn Roll" named after my 8 yr old. Absolutely love love love Sai Cafe!
Still the best sushi in the Chicagoland area. We started coming to Sai Cafe 16 years ago, and it was a favorite when we lived in the neighborhood. Now that we live in the suburbs, we make special trips in the city just for dinner at this restaurant. The service is outstanding, the team is friendly, and the quality of the fish is exceptional.
