I know it was New Year's Eve and there was also a wedding going on....but, I ordered the duck and was told it would be WELL DONE. I asked if it could be medium. The duck was COLD but cooked medium. The confit was SO OVERCOOKED I could not eat it (impossible to chew). The dessert and other parts of the meal were wonderful as were our servers and Ashley and another charming woman who's name I am blocking. I have been here before and will return again for another meal....will need to reconsider NYE however.
Restaurant week is always a deal and a good time to try out this scenic restaurant. The food was just good. The only thing outstanding was the chipotle butternut squash soup. Everything else was good. The fish & chips were actually kind of a disappointment. The portion was small and the fish and fries were a little soggy. But the ambiance was worth the drive.
The food at the Safari Room Restaurant has always been consistent and very good. My wife and I have been coming here to dine for several years and we've never had a bad meal. The menu always has several standard items and some new dishes you wouldn't necessarily find at other restaurants. It's a great value for the quality of the dining experience.
Went there for lunch after doing the new "under the Breakers" mansion tour - would not have thought about it but for their participation in "Newport Restaurant Week - $16 lunches for 3 courses (also $35 dinners).
Food choices were three for each course .. I had Brie and Pear salad .. Fish and Chips (sweet potatoes) and Creme Brûlée with fresh fruit - all good lunch portions and very well presented and delicious. My wife had the "stuffy", chicken flatbread, and chocolate bread pudding. All terrific.
This was very good value in an up market restaurant- we'll be back but will likely quite a bit more!
Sat "outside" under fully glassed in heated tent, an extension of the main restaurant with a great water view of the south of Jamestown and Castle Hill Coast Guard bots and station on a beautiful, if a little nippy day.
Ocean View has always been one of my favorite restaurants and in the past, the service was always a bit slow but nothing to take too much into account for. My friends and I decided to attend for this year's restaurant week, and I get it, you get a different crowd than normal who traditionally have lower value bills. I will start with the fact that the only available seating was OUTSIDE. Yes it was covered in a tent with flaps and heat lamps, but it was so cold I did not take my jacket off the entire time. The service was very slow, I think there was only one waiter working with a few runners. Our food was all cold when it was served and very bland. Traditionally the food is fantastic and has a wow factor. My water was never refilled, not once after we were seated. I will say they were accommodating because I had to change our reservation but I was very unhappy with the experience this time, as well as my friends who I dined with. Because the experience prior to this has always been positive we will go back one more time, but this has left a very poor taste :(
My review is for people who come here dining in the off-season. We were there during the last week that the restaurant keeps the patio open (covered and with heaters) but open at that. The next weekend i was told, they move completely inside. Me and my two friends dined on a Saturday evening around 7:30pm. There were about 5-6 other tables filled, the room was essentially empty. The food was okay, but to be honest i almost can't remember what i got, it was unmemorable. Also the burrata is essentially made for one person - i would describe it was a small scoop of ice cream.
I'm sure this place is much more worth it to go during the summer due to it's beautiful location, but besides that it's just okay.
We arrived early but were seated right away. Tables are a little close together so if you want a private conversation this isn’t the place to have it. Server was slammed and off season they seemed a little understaffed but we were in no rush so we didn’t mind the wait for our server. The ambiance and views are spectacular. Started with a shared order of Lobster Mac & Cheese which was spectacular and the Clam Chowder had subtle differences that separate it from others and gave it a little kick. My filet was great, my son’s tuna didn’t come out as rare as he likes it but was very good nonetheless and my wife’s salmon with the crab & shrimp crusting was quite tasty. Overall an enjoyable evening and would definitely recommend and return.
We went here for dinner while visiting our son during Family Weekend at Salve Regina. We were looking for a restaurant where he could get a nice steak and my wife could get seafood. Tired of the touristy restaurants in downtown Newport, my son chose to eat here. The property itself is amazing, and the water views kept us entertained while waiting for our food, which arrived promptly. We got the cheese plate as a starter and it was full of not only cheeses but plenty of fresh fruit as well. Entrees included the lobster roll, filet mignon and NY strip. Everybody enjoyed their food, with left overs to send back to the dorm for a nice snack at a later date. I should also add that the drinks from the bar were well made and not watered down.
We enjoyed Sunday brunch in spite of the having to sit outside in the sweltering heat and having to share our food with a constant plethora of yellow jackets.
A beautiful view of the bay and Jamestown, the bridge and many sail boats was outstanding.
We both had chowder & lobster napoleon, and shared 1 salad, 1 stuffie, and we both had cake and coffee for dessert.
The portions and quality were good, and it was refreshing to have a lobster dish that did not skimp on the lobster! The bill before gratuity was $130.00 Was it worth it? For a special occasion and a special person, yes.
Would love to go back and eat inside.
Safari Room is a FAV for Sunday brunch, lunch and dinner. the setting is spectacular looking out to the ocean, green grass and seating to relax. Often you will see weddings on the lawn or on the patio area. Food is very good as well as drinks. A must especially on a gorgeous day!
The safari room has a beautiful atmosphere. We just got a drink and two appetizers which were delicious. We got the clam chowder and cheese platter. We would of had dinner but we got there at 3 on a Sunday and dinner isn't served until 5. They have a brunch menu before 5 on Sundays. We plan on going back.
I took a first date here. The service was excellent, the food was phenomenal (I highly, HIGHLY recommend the Rhode Island Stuffed Quahogs - they're simply incredible) and the view was stunning. There was a wedding going on just outside the dining area, but we weren't disturbed and could still hold a conversation. The food is somewhat pricey.. on paper. But when you add in the quality, the service and the view, it makes sense. When I come to Newport and want excellent oceanfront dining, it's traditionally been Castle Hill Inn, but after discovering Safari Room - I'll definitely be back. Hats off to the staff and chef - everything was top-notch.
Beautiful spot, I just wish the food were better. I had the "Shrimp Scampi". I realize there are all sorts of scampi recipes, but I have never had one like this, and that is not a recommendation. It was more like a thin Bouillabaisse. There was actually more lobster than shrimp, but most of the lobster was in tiny piece. There were a couple of clams and four medium sized shrimp. This was served over wide noodles. First, the broth was thin and not that flavorful. Second, the broth was so thin (think a clear soup) that it was hard to eat the noodles without splashing sauce all over. Final, complaint ... they did not offer any sort of bread with it. I'll be back, but I will not be ordering the "Shrimp Scampi". Everyone else in the part had lobster rolls, I should have but I am not that big a lobster fan, another reason I did not care for the Scampi.
Go for a drink! Watch the sunset. The location is superb however the food and the service are average at best. We had the scampi and a fish dish which were dry and rather tasteless. The wedge salad was good and a huge portion. Service was ok but rather indifferent. That being said, the view is worth the price of admission.
More than 30 years ago, we went to this property. Nice to see that it is still in good shape. The sunset from this location is wonderful! Worth the drive. Waitress Victoria was friendly and efficient. Recommend: the stuffies, Caesar salad and the seafood scampi-generous portion of seafood and fresh made pasta!
