Safari Room Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The restaurant is at a hotel that has a beautiful location overlooking Narragansett Bay outside of downtown Newport The prices and menu are aiming at providing a fine dining experience but the actual food is bland and the service is amateurish. If it wasn't such a long drive, I would suggest going there for a drink at sunset. The nearby Inn at Castle Hill is the real deal. Not inexpensive but worth it for the food and ambience.
Beautiful environment with spectacular views of the water and Jamestown. If you time it right, the Sunset is almost always a great picture opportunity. There is a new drink menu with great choices. The service can be slow at times but who really wants to rush to leave such a nice place!
This restaurant has an outstanding view of the ocean and its surrounding setting, perfect for a wedding party, as was occurring while we were there for a sunset dinner. Enjoyed the lobster bisque, but quite pricey at $28 for the amt. of soup, even if did include a lobster tail in the center!
Wine list was quite ample and our specials of Mahi Mahi fish with sticky rice were nicely cooked, although I found the snap peas to be soft in the middle and stringy on the ends, so not digestible. After dinner chocolate layer cake and grand marnière drink was fine and the service was attentive.
What was most disappointing, however, was they asked if it was a special dinner when I reserved via Open Table; I noted it as our 34th anniversary, and yet absolutely no mention was ever made and when I inquired after paying the bill, the manager said we should have received a special dessert or glasses of champagne. Lovely idea, but not so if never happens, and please don't ask if special occasion is later ignored, or remedied when pointed out.
Would return otherwise.
Celebrated the brides birthday during her bachelorette weekend, safari room was the perfect setting for incredible photos of the Bridal party that we'll have forever! Extremely intimate setting even though you're on an open patio overlooking the water. And facing the sunset! Couldn't have asked for a better location. Impeccable food with gracious serving sizes. Our only "complaint" was the desert options but that's just us, so we passed. Highly suggest for any and all special occasion celebrations in Newport.
I never come to the safari room specifically for the food. It is just so beautiful I love to go there and always take visitors for a true Newport dining experience. That being said, I thought my pasta seafood dinner was very good. A little oily, but it had a lot of seafood in it, even the lobster. The salmon and tuna my friends ordered was pretty average, according to them.
nonetheless, I would go there again for the ambience. a must go when in in Newport.
Watching the sun set over Narragansett Bay from this spot simply cannot be beat! Despite several small children around making noise and my particular order not being so good (soppy, wet mayo-drenched coleslaw on the lobster poor boy was downright disgusting- and I like mayo) it was def worth the drive out of Newport to avoid the crowds/congestion that is the busy season.
It was our 40th wedding anniversary, seated at table, tables extremely close. Waited at least 25 minutes for waiter to ask what we would like to drink, very inexperienced, didn't write anything down and had to ask my wife twice which wine, which was Malbec. Waited and waited and waited for our drinks, another 20 minutes or so, my wifes wine was undrinkable, very poor quality. We sat again for at least 20 minutes to order food, at this point we decided just to pay for the drinks and leave. Extremely poor service, loud, etc.
Bottomline is what is written on trip advisor and other sites is true, a lot of not so great write ups. We went to another restaurant and service was great as well as the food
Food was great. Service was terrible. Drinks were good but second round was wrong drink. Drank it anyhow. Ordered another never came. Ordered bread, never came. Table was not cleared of dirty plates from appetizer when entree came. Silverware was not replaced from apps to dinner.
The view was beautiful and the food was good. However, we were disappointed with the wait staff. The wait staff was more interested to talking to others then in checking if we needed refills on drinks or even bringing us silverware. The hostess asked if we would like to sit outside with the view which we promptly took her up on it but then neglected to tell us there would be a wedding going on a few feet away within 20 minutes of our arrival. The entire wedding party and ALL of the guests blocked our beautiful view and proceeded to stare at us while we ate our meal. I would NOT recommend this place which is unfortunate because perhaps if you go on a night there is no wedding and the wait staff learns how to do their jobs it would have been a different experience. There are too many other choices in Newport to bother with this one.
The food is amazing. This was our 5 year anniversary and we haven't been back since we had our wedding reception at Ocean Cliff. The views are beautiful and it brought back so many memories on our wedding night. If you are looking for great food, great views, and a great dining experience, this is a must try. We will definitely try to make it back more often.
I have been trying to make it here for 2 years now and things finally worked out to where I could make it. Everything was amazing from the food to the water front view. The way the outdoor seating is set up you can see the water from almost everywhere. Everything we ordered was cooked perfectly and the special was amazing. It was definitely worth the wait.
