About

It doesn't take an explorer to seek out the aptly named Safari Room amid the exotic zebra-print furniture and carved elephant busts of the Davenport Tower lobby. The frequent hum of activity, the sparkle of laughter and conversation — not to mention the incredibly affordable lunch and dinner specials — seem to draw scores of guests almost instinctively.

Since opening in 2007, this truly stylish restaurant has had the quiet distinction of becoming a kind of pet project to owner Walt Worthy. It is a place where he has been able to introduce all the classic Southern fare from his youth in Georgia: dishes like homestyle grits, savory smoked barbecue, indulgent fried okra, and flatbreads fired in a special oven then sprinkled with tantalizing toppings. Yet the menu is broad enough to satisfy all cravings, no matter whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Booked for an anniversary dinner; food was average, nothing special. Waiter service was nothing spectacular. The ambiance was nice but the happy hour seemed to be the biggest attractor. Probably won't return for dinner, maybe a lunch place.

We prefer the Safari Grill for Sunday brunch before going the the great Spokane Symphony since we can still order off the delicious Brunch menu, with its crab omelet or salmon Eggs Benedict, soft boiled eggs with corned beef hash, etc. It was disappointing to us when the Palm Court Grill removed these from their Sunday lunch menu, which severely limited our choices.

Celebrated our wedding anniversary there with our adult kids. We had never been to the Safari Room before and it did not disappoint. We made a dinner reservation for a Saturday evening, which was a good thing. The bar and lounge area were packed and the restaurant filled up shortly after we arrived. The happy hour is terrific... 50% off all drinks and flatbread appetizers. All of us enjoyed our drinks and meals. Everything was delicious. The service was great too. Our server was attentive and made sure we were pleased. The noise level was a little high in there, as the ceilings are tall and there are a lot of marbled walls and floors. It is a very luxurious place though.

The Davenport hotels are a cut above ... always such a pleasure to stay ... I therefore thought the Safari Grill would be great -- but learned otherwise. I had carefully chosen this spot for a special birthday dinner for my son. It wasn't horrible ... but certainly nothing to write home about. The Caesar salad had way too much dressing .. was soggy. My salmon was on the dry side for sure. Service was mediocre at best.

I went to this restaurant for an anniversary dinner. It was listed as a restaurant that offered 2 for 1 entrees with my passport credit card and we like to try new places. I was hoping more for fresh fish/seafood or pasta/vegetables (not a big meat eater) and not much on the menu to choose from for me. I had fish and chips which were very good, but was hoping for some healthier options (baked halibut etc.). When the check came and we tried to use the passport discount, waitress said we couldn't use it because one of the entrees was a special. So, not a great experience all the way around. The bar area looked fun.

I've been to the Safari Room many, many of times. This was by far the worst experience I've ever had.
We went for my 35th birthday and there was a group of 6 of us and 2 small children.
when we arrived the had our table ready and everything was great. We waited and waited for our server to finally come over and take drink orders. And then we waited and waited for the drinks to come. Finally we got to order food after about 45 min of being there. We were all starving. Finally our food came and 50% of it was correct. Three dishes were completely wrong and completely different items were brought out. For example a flat bread was ordered and she got Mac and cheese.
We waited another 30 min for the correct food to come out. And then to try to get our checks was another 40 min. Needless to say we were there for almost 4 hours. What a mess. Very disappointed in the service.

Our appetizer arrived after we had finished our main meal. The waitress did not know about any of the sides and was sure that the vegetable was gone. She had to come back several times to advise us. The dessert was very small and comped however the appetizer which was not fully eaten was not.

We each had a 3 -course meal for 18 dollars plus drinks. Go at happy hour to get half price appetizers and drinks. The bar is very loud and spills over into the dining area so this is not a romantic quiet spot. Beautiful safari decor in the Davenport Tower, parking garage will fully validate with $10 purchase. Across the street is the historic Davenport Hotel for lodging or just touring the grand ballrooms of yesteryear. Be sure to pick up some soft peanut brittle at Bruttles across the street. Walk around the block for boutique shops or plan an event in the Arts District at one of the renowned playhouses. Drive to the top of the Tower parking garage for spectacular sunset views of the city and a little romance.

Wanted something good while being in Spokane. The restaurant is on the first floor of a great hotel - the Davenport. Coconut Salmon appetizer was fantastic. The salad I had was also superb. It was really slow when I was there and sat at the bar. For some reason the bartender who took care is me was un-attentive. I had to flag him down to refill my cocktail. Would definitely go again.

Made a reservation for 4:30pm, when we arrived we were told we couldn't eat dinner because dinner didn't start until 5:00. So we said fine we'll sit and wait so we can order dinner at 5:00, nowhere were we ever told we could not eat dinner before 5:00. So we ordered drinks and waited until 5:00 to order dinner meanwhile were harassed by 5 different employees who continually came to the table to interrogate us about what our plan was and advised us we had to be gone by 6:10. We let each person know that the speed of service was up to them, not us, we have no way of knowing how slow the service is going to be so check your staff if you want us gone at a certain time and don't allow dinner reservations before 5:00. The experience and way we were treated on Mother's Day and being harassed by the staff from the moment we got there was inexcusable and something I've never experienced in the hundreds of other restaurants I've been to. They seemed more worried about their next table, which wasn't even a problem since we were gone by 6:00. Blew me away actually the whole experience and the an entourage of people coming to our table and questioning our motives... Just to eat dinner that was it.

We were seated with our reservation on time, but it was easily 60 minutes before the food arrived. 2 out of 3 orders were wrong. In addition, I asked what the featured vegetable was and was told green beans and when my plate arrived, I had broccoli on the plate. I asked why & was told they were out of green beans. I said I'd keep the broccoli and after 1/2 bite, could not eat it. Hard & nearly cold. When the waitress came back, I mentioned the quality and was told I could have saluted mushrooms & red peppers.... fine, I said. But instead, I was surprised to receive the green beans that they were "out of". My husband asked for baked beans with his pulled pork and got potato salad. My chicken dish came with rice and I asked for vegetables ONLY (which I thought was green beans) and my plate arrived with MASHED POTATOES and the broccoli. I can't imagine eating here again. The food we did get was mediocre at best and 2 of 3 orders were incorrect AND that's after waiting an hour to receive our plates. Would never recommend Safari.

It may have been because it was valentine's day but going out for dinner with my fiancée was the best service. Starting from the refills of water to the arrival on the main entrées, the waiters were not 'en garde'. In other words, the service was really slow. On top of that by the time the food came (Ravioli and Safari Room Gumbo), it was already cooled down and the bread was really tough to bite into. Overall, the service was slow and the food did not come to our table hot.
We thought about getting dessert but because we figured the service was slow and nobody tended to our table, we decided to end our meal there and go to Red Robin for dessert where they were quicker than the Safari Room.

Fantastic service with elegant dining with very modestly priced tasty lunch specials. Our group of 27 were seated in booths and tables. The service was efficient and friendly. The $6 lunch specials are reasonable and delicious with a variety of choices that makes one question why anyone would eat at a substandard fast food joint in downtown Spokane when such a fabulous option exists at the Safari room. This is a great lunch place for a couple, a group of friends, or a small group meeting for lunch. The decor is fun but elegant and enhances the conversation. The lighting is perfect and the food very tastefully presented and delicious.

This is the 2nd time we have been here. The food is very good, a good selection of food and the prices are very comparative to other restaurants in the area. The service is very very good. The drinks are very good as well. The desserts are just the right size after a great dinner. The atmosphere in the Safari room is really nice, the whole Davenport Hotel and Tower experience is well worth the money.

I stayed at this restaurant's hotel for a week and ate here three times. The grapevine martini is the absolute best. For food, I like the fried okra and had it every time. I had the flatbed pizza tonight and it was really good. Service is fairly consistent and the prices are very reasonable for a hotel restaurant.

The drinks here are really good and the food is pretty good too. Not a whole lot of variety, but they do well with what they make. I love the fried okra here. Had the baby back ribs which were fall off the bone tender. Service was excellent and I was never lacking food or beverage.

The Safari Room makes the best drinks around. To start with, all martinis are made as doubles and they have a great variety to choose from, all of them excellent. The best in my opinion is the Grapevine. They have a great dinner special for $17.95 that includes a choice of several entrées, salad and dessert. I got the chicken pot pie which looked and tasted great until I asked for some fresh cracked pepper on it. The grinder dumped several while peppercorns onto my food and rendered it mostly uneatable. The waitress didn't offer to correct it, she just laughed and walked away. I didn't finish it, but I was full from everything else. I would eat here again but would avoid the fresh ground pepper!

Food was great like always. Had a 7 o'clock reservation, but did not get seated until until around 7:30. Spoke to waitress let her know we were in the bar. I had to go to hostess station at around 7:30, to check to see if a table was ready. Was surprised to see that there were many open tables... yet we were still waiting.

I was disappointed with the food. The mashed potatoes tasted old and gluey. The fried chicken was not very crunchy and the coating fell off easily. The desserts were very small (like a shot glass portion).
My friend's salmon was overcooked and the teriyaki glaze was over whelmingly sweet and sticky. Cougar cheeze dip app was okay. Was expecting more from the fried okra, which came with a small portion of ranch dressing for dipping. I would have liked to see a spicy dipping sauce and more of it.
Service was GREAT though! The prime rib was good, the rice was good, and green beans were good.
There is a confusing theme: safari throughout the restaurant, then a southern cooking theme (The owner is from the South).
