Safari Grill Ratings and Reviews
We dined at the Safari Grill in part, because it was one of few Calgary restaurants open on New Years day - my wife's birthday. We had a fantastic family meal and thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful selection of very tasty Asian influenced African food and the really friendly service as well. The wine list featured a number of excellent valued South African wines. The overall dining experience was outstanding as was the value received. We are already planning a return visit and hope to introduce a number of friends to this gem of a restaurant find.
Safari Grill is my go-to gem in Calgary for unreal flavours and a remarkable experience. Ali treats all of his guests respectably and features an unparalleled menu fit for five stars from John Gilchrist! The African short ribs and goat vindaloo are my absolute favourite dishes. Sop up the sauce with cheese garlic naan and you will die and go to heaven after your dinner.
Since this was our first time here, we had starters and a number of curry and bbq options which all exceeded expectations. We also included a slew of dessert options in our selection which were all good, except the Paan which we found to be very interesting and were outside the comfort of our palate, although it gave us poutpori like breath haha!
We would definitely be back and recommend this joint!
Returned with my family at my son's request. Enjoyed a variety of great food - everything from grilled meats to curries - complete with rice and their own type on naan bread, and of course a bottle of Pinotage (very affordable). Owner took time to explain the dishes to us and checked on us regularly. He made us feel very comfortable as we shared/explored different dishes and discovered new spices and our own personal favorites.
We love going to Safari Grill for our family gettogethers, the service is great and food is always consistently delicious. We ordered the famous African ribs (medium), mogo, kabobs, and katchori. Everything came out warm and very tasty.
Will be coming back soon!
Booked a table for two for Saturday evening. The restaurant was busy but there was no compromise in their service. We ordered the Serengeti Platter with pili pili fries and licked our fingers at every bite. The BBQ meat was very well cooked with flavour and aroma that satisfied our hunger. It was very tender as well and portions were big too! Definitely going back?
This restaurant is one of my favourite and it never disappoints! I went with my family and for the entree we enjoyed the beef mishkaki which, as suggested by the owner, goes perfectly with the tamarind sauce and salad that they serve on the side. We ordered Masai goat curry and butter chicken curry with rice and naan for the main course. I have not had curries so rich and flavourful at any other Indian restaurant! The food satisfies your hunger and the ambience makes you feel cozy and welcomed. A perfect place for family dinners!
I was initially referred to this restaurant by my friend and I had decided to be back soon! So I took my fiancé to celebrate his promotion. When we got there, the restaurant was packed with people but we were very warmly welcomed. We were asked to wait to be seated but it did not take too long. The owner apologized for the wait and asked the server to take good care of us! We were honoured! The ambience in this restaurant is cozy and perfect for quiet and romantic dining. We had the Spicy Kuku Bite and Prawns Korma which were mouth watering, full of flavour & rich with ingredients. We are definitely going back to try their other dishes!
I was very disappointed with this. I had a reservation for 11 people at 7:30 on Sunday night . When we arrived there was a private party and the owner told me sorry can't seat you. I showed him my email confirming and he said can't help you. We then had to try to find another restaurant at that time on Sunday. How can I rate the restaurant when I didn't get to eat there?
Overall a very pleasant experience. This is the 3rd time we have dined here. Its probably the best place in Calgary for authentic East African cuisine. Lovers of Indian food will also love this place. Best Beef Ribs in town!!! Though it is slightly pricier than other East African restaurants in town, the quality of food, the ambience & the friendly service more than make up for it.
Went back for Father's Day and wasn't disappointed. I had the Serengeti platter and my wife and son chose different curry dishes. We paired the meal(s) with Fleur du Cap Pinotage (my son enjoyed a Savanna Cider with his meal) and we all enjoyed the experience very much. Owner is very helpful in choosing and recommending dishes - lots to choose from. We love the food and will definitely be back again to try something different...maybe the buttered prawns or Ndizi Na Nyama with a chardonnay.
I am not particularly into spice, so slightly nervous but they toned it down for me. Authentic African decorations. very reasonable prices. Loved the Dengu (Lentil stew), the basmati rice, Muhogo (cassava fries). We got a "fordhani platter" with several different meats - my favorite was the short ribs. Also loved the homemade ice cream (kulfi) - pistachio best flavor. And after we were done (& paid for), I recognized 2 bottles the waitress was delivering to another table as Savanna Dry - a carbonated cider I had tried in South Africa so we had to try those too. Went on a Sunday and pretty busy - could have used another waiter. Bill for party of five was $77 without tip (not counting the Savanna Dry bought after)
What a great meal at Safari Grill! The flavors in the combo platter were delicious. From the tenderness of the beef ribs to the spicy flavor of the skewered prawns, all the items were enjoyable. For a unique dining experience, give Safari Grill a try. You won't be disappointed!
