Sacred Cod - Chatham Bars Inn Ratings and Reviews
I was very disappointed for a New Year’s Eve dinner. The staff was short handed and the food was poor quality. I expected it would be great, I think the regular chef was off. The Pan fried Haddock was skimpy and cold. Clam chowder was very thick, sent it back and waited a long time for a little kids pizza for my granddaughter. Looked like a microwave pizza. We were disappointed.
Glad to find a restaurant open on Christmas Eve Night. They had a small limited Holiday menu. I got the Haddock and so did my mother and it was barely warm -- just enough not to return it. My sister got the Risotto which was too hot. The table next to us returned the chowder for not being hot enough. Service and the hostess was fantastic. A little bit pricey for the portion size too.
We went for dinner during Chatham Christmas Stroll. The menu was heavy seafood (as expected) but had great options for the non-seafood eaters. We enjoyed all our dishes, our only complaint was our entrees came out before we were even finished with our appetizers. We didn't want to rush the dinner as this was a girls weekend/ getaway. They were very apologetic, but no one wanted reheated fish, so we took the entrees as they came and had all the dishes on our table. All in all, not a showstopper, but a slight annoyance.
My friends and I get together once a month for lunch. In the summer we go to the CBI Beach Grill so we decided to try the Sacred Cod for our December lunch. We were pleasantly surprised at the changes that have been made to the old tavern. The food was very good & the Christmas decorations were outstanding. We were very glad we chose the Sacred Cod & will be back for future luncheons.
Since I picked the restaurant I was quite embarrassed when the service was horrific and the food was sub bar. The well reputable Chatham Bars left much to be desired. I had never eaten here before but found the other 5 people I was with had and shortly found out why they were disappointed when they found out where I had chosen to eat. It seems they had been here several weeks before and had the same horrible experience. From the moment we sat down we waited for everything. The bread that was in the oven for 'an hour' finally came out when we were almost done with our dinner. Appetizers were brought out for all but one guest who ate much after us. I wouldn't recommend and wouldn't go back. Way over rated.
My daughter and I planned lunch prior to our spa appointment at CBI. The noise level made it hard to converse even though we were sitting next to each other. The wait staff was excellent but it took over an hour for our flatbread to arrive. Further more, the wine we had selected was not chilled. Because of the slow service we were a few minutes late for our spa appointment.
We consoled each other by sitting in the jacuzzi in the rain and just enjoying each others company. The restaurant should invest in padded ceiling tiles or rugs to diminish the noise level. CBI is still a lovely destination point but it is in dire need of some upgrades...
My wife and I had a quiet dinner at a table near the bar, The room is pleasant, the service is friendly, professional and prompt. I had the soup special, roasted tomatoes and peppers locally grown; it was unusual and superb, like no tomato soup I had ever had. My wife's appetizer was excellent, We both had lump crabcakes, very nice indeed. It happens that night the Sacred Cod featured my favorite dessert, strawberry shortcake. It was visually a delight and fabulous to eat. It was one of the very best I have had and I have had a great many. This small restaurant at the famous Chatham Bars Inn resort is a gem, upholding the Inn's reputation for fine dining.
We had such high hopes after reading reviews, but the food was a huge disappointment. I ordered the chicken, it was completely flavorless and dry (not even seasoned with salt and pepper), the eggplant was so overcooked it was liquefied, and the whole dish was sitting in a pool of tomato water. My fiance ordered a burger which was slathered in so much blue cheese he could not taste anything else. I sent back my dish for the first time in my life. Service was GREAT, but definitely would not return.
We had a wonderful dining experience and loved our waiter Alando! The one thing we missed from last year was the wonderful cranberry butter to spread on your delicious rolls-PLEASE BRING THAT BACK!! My children even enjoyed their dinners which is a difficult task! Thanks and see you next year!
First, the Chatham Bars Inn as a very elegant and picturesque venue. We were early for our reservation and enjoyed drinks on the patio overlooking the ocean. Tremendous service quality and attention to detail. It felt like a walk back in time. The Sacred Cod is a more casual "pub" atmosphere that is a bit crowded and loud, but the food was spectacular and fresh. I drove past the CBI farm in Brewster the day before so I know that the food is locally sourced and it was delicious. Serving sizes are modest, but every bite was delicious.
Dumb choice on my part. Stars sounded more formal than we wanted but I can't recommend this when within a half mile there are 20 places that are a better choice. Its the bar area at the Hotel no windows, no booths. 4 people, $250 tab- 2 salads, 1 app, 2 beers, 1 glass of wine (our 4th member was never asked, so water) 1 burger (excellent), fish and chips (very good), Haddock (very good) and Scallops- disappointing, sweet on sweet (i had the scallops, it promised kohlrabi "shavings" exactly 3, and polenta, their recipe anywhere else would have been considered creamed corn.) The service was underfoot and constantly interrupted conversation ( a pet peeve).
I went on Saturday evening while vacationing there and the special was pork chop, which was my choice. The meat was very tough and pink ( not cook through). I went again on W ednesday evening (4 days later) and the special was still pork chop! I choose a white encrusted fish which again was under cooked, gray color. Very pricey for the value
Went to The Sacred Cod on July 3rd after we dropped off our folding chairs for the Chatham 4th of July parade. It was fun to see so many people dropping chairs and blankets off the night before the parade. Love this tradition! The view of the ocean is just gorgeous from Chatham Bars Inn. Chatham Bars Inn is very expensive and can be a bit snooty but going to the pub is a nice option where you can enjoy the ambiance of it all. Our server, Elizabeth was very personable. The little rolls they serve were incredible. It was a great dining experience.
Having had two meals at the Sacred Cod we decided to brings friends there for dinner tonight. Our table was available when we arrived. Dining room was busy with one or two more large families celebrating the holiday so noise level was higher than on prior visits.
Appetizers that were good were the mussels and clams. The kale salad was a disappointment - nothing special about it. Mains - the steak, scallops and haddock were ok but again the plates were nothing special. The cauliflower vegetarian plate was supposed to be a steak but instead was several small pieces of cauliflower.
We had to ask for some bread and the Parker rolls were good but should have been brought to the table without a request.
Overall, a disappointing evening.
The meal was quite expensive for their bar, not the main dining room, nor the porch with the fantastic view. This said the food was absolutely excellent and the bar a little quieter which suited us well. I will definately go back there for another special occasion, and will rember the quality of the meal for some time to come....
Horrible. This is a tavern, not a fine dining experience. Was initially seated in the bar and asked to be moved. We were. We asked about the chef's tasting and were told they didn't have it because.... "the chef is off tonight". Scary. Fish and chips were chips with a small 4 oz piece of fish. Haddock was bland and cold. We couldn't get out of here fast enough. There are several restaurants on this property. Don't eat here or in the veranda. Supposedly Stars is good? But they aren't on open table.
Have been here before and the food is always good. We had an early reservation because that is what we prefer, however, there happened to be a large amount of young children in at the time. I don't know why people bring their children (under six years old) to nice restaurants. They can't sit still for any length of time and they tend to be noisy, which makes it uncomfortable for other guests. Having had six children of our own, we are not anti children, but we are anti restless children. Perhaps I should complain about the parents.
Expected more from a top notch resort. Our dinner was good, not excellent. Was there for a very special occasion and it was not even acknowledged to the very end of the meal and that was just a congrats. Server told us they are walling off the Sacred Cod for a few months and having dinner every day at Stars. Thinking that it may be a great idea. Overall Disappointed. Can no longer tell people they should visit as even the manager
On duty didn't seem overly interested in the tavern or dining area
Chatham Bars Inn is a 5 star location that IMO only gives a 3-4 star experience. To me it seems that it doesn't try that hard to be a 6 star destination because of its reputation. We went for a casual small bite and drinks, as always the location is its strongest point, the place was decorated very wintery/Christmasy and was clean. Now for the not so good, we arrived earlier than our reservation as we wanted to have a few drinks, when we informed the staff of this they directed us to another room to have drinks rather the Tavern Bar as we wanted. I was minutes from asking why we couldn't go the bar 10 steps away from us but my wife hates when I question these things so went along with them. We arrived at the room and we immediately knew something was off, I asked someone who works there and they sent us to a room where a function was being held? Not happy with this but they sat us early. Wide ordered a specialty drink that was horrible to the point where she had to change it but I will say second one was fine. Food was good, we started with mussels that were average at best, broth had little flavor and bread it came with had a burnt taste. Then she ordered a salad, which was good but very small for price. I ordered a burger that was good, a bit overcooked beyond the medium rare that I asked for but it was close.
Overall, CBI has excellent ambiance but the service and food does not warrant a 5 star destination or prices that they charge. We know this but we go back for the ambiance, a shame if someone there could address the service and food it would be a top notch place.
