I have been a loyal customer of Sabor since it's opening. The staple of my nights out at the civic center. But after my experience at my last visit, I will no be returning. While Sabor is on the pricey side for Mexican Food, the quality and the uniqueness of the dishes made it worthwhile in the past. On this visit, we were told a new policy. We would be charged if we wanted chips and salsa at our table. We said ok fine. While not happy about this. When we asked for more salsa (the size bowl of maybe 3 tablespoons, we were told each additional bowl would be $1.50 Seriously?! The server was very sweet and we could tell felt badly to have to ask us this. We asked to speak to the manager. I did not catch her name. Needless to say her response was neither polite or helpful. She informed us that they needed to charge that and that they only serve high quality ingredients and were losing money. We suggested that adding a dollar or two to the already $20 enchilada would be more well received than the chip salsa charge. Basically she didn't agree. Our server then asked, since we had spoken to her if he could give us the salsa at no charge. She said no. The fact is while I can pay the additional money, Why should we? or at least charge us one time but to charge per tiny serving of salsa at a Mexican restaurant is taking advantage of your clients. Sadly, We won't return. Cancel my next reservation for Friday.
The restaurant is incredibly loud. They seated 5 adults in a booth for 4people so three of us were very squashed. They did not put chips and salsa on the table like every Mexican restaurant in town. We had to ask for it. Then when we asked for some more ( served in a tiny bowl) the server told us we would have to pay for it. None of us had ever experienced being charged for salsa, and the Manager’s explanation was “you know it’s very expensive to make it”I we all recognize BS when we hear it. Between their already high prices and that cheap attitude, none if us will go there again.
This place is ok, the service was substandard!
They charge for chips and salsa! We spent over $200 in food and drinks but had to pay for chips and salsa. I don’t mind paying for anything if it’s worth it but this is tacky!!
Excellent food, good service. Disappointing that they now charge for chips ($3.00). This was already the most expensive Mexican restaurant in town and now they charge for chips...geez.
My wife and I enjoy dinner at Sabor especially when it coordinates with a show at the Civic Arts Plaza. It's probably the best Mexican restaurant in T.O. The menu is unique.
Loved Sabor! We took our kids and my daughters friend from France for Valentine's Day. We made a reservation for 8pm but we showed up 30 min. early and they were kind enough to seat us. Everyone was so kind and made the night wonderful for all of us. The food was incredible as always!!
My favorite Mexican restaurant. I always get the shrimp enchiladas. Their special margarita was outstanding as well.
Avg, below avg food for the price. Cocktails pretty good, Mezcal based cocktails awesome.
As always everything was great. We were there early so the noise level was low. When people started coming in it raised a tad,
This is a beautiful restaurant. We were hoping to have a better experience for our party of 9 people. The food was good, some dishes better than others. The chicken enchiladas were pretty basic, $19 seems a bit high for what you get. My son's enchilada's suizas were average, he was not impressed. My pork in banana leaf was excellent, but a little fatty. The carne asada was nothing special, skirt steak is typically a cheap cut of meat yet they charged well over $20, I think around $26 or $28. We also asked for chips and salsa, 3 baskets for the table and that was $9. Our margaritas were huge, but could hardly taste the alcohol...a lot of ice and pretty watered down. $14 each. Our bill for 9 was $360 including tax and tip...so $40 each. Things I liked...the tortillas were great, shrimp tacos good, beans good, skinny enchiladas good, service good. Overall good, but not great. Won't be back, too many other better choices in town!
We have eaten ay Sabor on many occasions. They offer unique Mexican dishes, great presentation. Imagine our surprise to be charged for chips and salsa, a standard in all Mexican restaurants. This is a new charge and we were not told there was a charge, nor is it listed on menu along with other appetizers. Cost of dinner with margaritas was almost $200 for four of us. When spending that much for Mexican food, I would think that chips and salsa would be included. It is a small issue, but one that makes us think twice before returning when we live in an area with several choices of places to eat.
Food was mediocre and portions were somewhat small. Overall, the meal was overpriced compared to other similar restaurants.
I’ve been a fan of Sabor for many years. In fact, it’s been my go-to in Thousand Oaks. However, not much has changed on the menu in that time, and the service was fair at best and poor at worst on the last time out. I’m definitely not pleased that they’ve started charging for chips and salsa. Apparently the rent went up necessitating the change, which I get, but program that into the menu. Don’t nickel and dime your patrons, especially with stale chips. If you’re going to charge, make them to order. Sadly, I’ll be looking for a new go-to.
The restaurant itself is lovely, nice ambience. I had the cauliflower tacos, which were good, but I have
We were seated immediately in a booth as requested. Great service and food. Had the Tacos Dorados and Cochinita Pibil, and both were excellent. Highly recommended.
Theater tickets at Civic Arts Plaza. Restaurant staff always great about getting you in and out on time. The food is always fantastic!!!
This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. Our first visit in 2020 was a disappointment. We were seated in the bar which was great because the football playoffs were going on. However, no chips or salsa showed up and when we asked we were advised that since the first of the year they were only available for an extra charge. I have never been to a Mexican restaurant that charged extra for that standard fare, nor will I ever go back to a Mexican restaurant that wants to charge me for chips and salsa. We ordered our dinner, and quite honestly, the Street Tacos were not up to par. The pork was a bit dryer than usual. To be honest, the only really good part of our visit was the service...
We have dined at Sabor multiple times before and always enjoyed it. But this experience was way below average. Apparently the head chef is now in the New York location leaving Thousand Oaks with an extremely bland menu. Food was edible but nowhere near worth the price paid. Chips and salsa now cost $3 with a salsa refill costing $1.50! Plus our server took our order and never returned until dropping off the check. Very disappointed.
We were surprised & unhappy to be charged for each small bowl of salsa & for each basket of chips. I heave never been to a restaurant that does that. Apparently this is new at the beginning of the year. If the prices were especially low I might understand, but this was really irritating. Will definitely figure in to deciding if we choose that restaurant again. It’s like a restaurant offering bread & charging for each slice. Definitely seemed like a restaurant trying to “nickel & dime” you.
I love this place and usually they try to be accommodating of my dietary restrictions. This time I asked for a quesadilla made with corn tortillas (I’m gluten free) and they said they were too busy. We also asked for margaritas with no sweetener but they definitely were sweet. Usually they are good about this but maybe just too busy that they couldn’t be bothered that night.
Very limited menu. Just tacos and enchiladas , chicken breast dish and some other entree items we were not interested in. We wanted fajitas but NO fajitas!! Very strange. The chicken tacos were dry white meat with nothing else inside the small soft shells.....Also,no complementary chips and salsa. There is a charge! That is also bizarre. Not too welcoming of a menu.
Would not return. Sorry. Note that bar area is attractive.
The food continues to be outstanding. The meals are creative and tasty. Definitely a place we like to go for a special meal either as a couple or with friends.
Delicious and juicy shrimp tacos. Great drinks. Nice menu overall. The Mexican style “old fashioned” is so unique and tasty.
As of January 1st Sabor is charging for chips and salsa “in order to keep quality up”. And they are charging $1.50 for additional salsa. There is a small sign in front of the door, but nothing on the menu or at the table. The waiter asked if we wanted chips, but didn’t say there would be a charge. He did tell us about the charge for extra salsa. They gave maybe 1/3 of a cup for 4 people, which is clearly not enough. We asked for more for our entrees, which means the entrees needed additional seasoning. There was no hot sauce at the table. No other Mexican restaurant I’ve ever been to has charged for chips or salsa. The food was not as good as it has been in the past and absolutely required salsa or other seasoning or sauce to make it palatable. So the charge for chips and salsa is not helping the quality of the food... but apparently is keeping the quality of their bank balance up. Sabor is nickel and diming their customers, much like Umami Burger had been doing in the months leading up to its closure. Our group goes to shows at the Civic Arts Plaza regularly, but will not be returning to Sabor.
What a great restaurant! Wonderful and authentic Mexican cuisine.
I've always enjoyed Sabor, as it was our "go to" for high quality, upscale Mexican food, with a unique menu. However, upon our last visit we discovered that they now charge for Chips and if you want another serving of Salsa, they charge for that as well. That's one of our pet peeves since very few, if any, restaurants do this. Combine this with much higher menu prices than your average Mexican restaurant, and it becomes a major turn-off. I'm sure their excuse is that the minimum wage just went up $1.00 an hour in 2020. Right, so they have to pay their employees $5.00 or $6.00 more each day. Ok, sure, and you pay for Healthcare, Retirement, etc., etc.!! Doubtful. I'm sure it's like a Resort Fee, or Baggage Fee. Keep the menu prices down, but charge an additional $2.00 or so for the extras!!
As far as the food is concerned, it does seem that in addition to the Chips and Salsa charge, the food has gone "on the cheap" (as my wife described it). The "so-called" Chicken in the Mole Enchiladas looked like it was boiled and resembled either canned chicken or worse! Just not even close to what you should expect for a $19.00 plate. Overall a disappointing visit, which will unfortunately be our last.
We have been coming to Sabot since it opened. It is one of our favorites, however this last visit was a little disappointing. The device was slow and it was dead in there. Also waited forever for the chips and salsa and when we asked they said oh we charge $3 for every salsa and basket of chips. We had a party of 6 and needed 3 of each. I think this is ridiculous. They charge enough for their food and now this!? I don’t know if any other Mexican restaurants that charge for their chips and salsa. I think they will lose patrons over this. Also the margaritas seemed watered down with very little tequila. Not sure how they expect to stay in business if they keep doing this. Just. Disappointing.
Service on New Years was great! Food was excellent as well.
New Year’s Eve - very family friendly. Friendly staff and love the skinny enchiladas.
A local favorite and one of our date night defaults. Love their chile rellano de marisco. Good drinks, good guacamole and delicious plantains.
The food was not good at all. The experience was poor
Loved the decor and ambiance. Server was slow and had no personality. Not mean or unfriendly, just not warm, welcoming or caring. Food was just okay. I’m disappointed to write this because I had been told that this was a great spot. Maybe it was an off night.
The blended margarita I ordered had 90 ice. The food was tiny and not tasty. I won’t go back. The restaurant facility is pretty and the area is beautiful but the food sub par.
I enjoyed the chicken burrito and my Wife liked the seafood tacos. The booth we sat in was private and spacious. The service was prompt and the food arrived at the table hot.
everything was delicious and very attentive service
Have been to Sabor many times. Have never has a bad meal or poor service. Unfortunately, on my latest visit, the service was very very slow. The food was delicious as always.
Nice restaurant. Family favorite!
Had a party of six on the patio. We got forgotten, had to ask for everything. Food was good probably won't go back.
