Our Story
The goal – to guarantee a wonderful meal with authentic cuisine and fabulous margaritas, serve over 50 artisanal and ancestral mezcals, and over 100 different types of tequila brands in a vibrant unique atmosphere that boasts excellent service. Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine opened in Astoria in 2021 with such a wonderful and successful home run that a second location opened in Patchogue in March 2022.

Ruta Oaxaca means “Road to Oaxaca,” a historic state in the southern part of Mexico. Mr. Castillo and his Partners are keenly focused on honoring Oaxacan culinary traditions, whose fame is derived in great part from its many varieties of moles. By legend, these ancient recipes are more than sauces, they are the very focus of the meal. Ruta Oaxaca proudly features four moles, each prepared using the Oaxacan mole recipes that have made the cuisine world famous.

Food and service were very good. However the seating is too tight. Almost impossible to get out of your seat and not touch the table next to you. Time for them to get a bigger space.

We had a reservation and arrived early. There seemed to be plenty of open tables, but the host said we had to wait, so we went to the bar. The bartender was so welcoming and made a mean margarita, so we decided to order dinner and ate sitting at the bar. Great food. Took home leftovers for another meal. Great value. I hadn't been there in a couple of years and I'm left wondering why I stopped going in the first place. Will be back.

Overall, the experience was pretty good. Me and my friend both got the Birria tacos, they were okay. But I’ve had better. It didn’t come with consume, which made the taco on the dry side and they were rather salty. It can include more flavor depths. The fondito was great though, and the chips were perfection! Overall, I would go back for a second try, just hoping for consume with my birria tacos next time.

When we entered the restaurant, the hostess and other staff warmly greeted us. The food, drinks, and service were remarkable. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a modern chic look. The new manager, Enio, checked in on us throughout our meal and wanted feedback about our experience. We love this restaurant; it is our go-to place for local Mexican food. I didn't like paying $4.00 for a side of beans and rice when ordering a $32.00 steak fajita meal. Outside of that, the prices are at the standard fare, and the food is delicious. The waitress and other staff members were friendly and made us feel like family while dining.
