From the initial greeting on arrival to saying goodbye at the end of our evening the hospitality and service was outstanding.Everyone was friendly , but professional and the teamwork was exceptional. There was no judgement made on us bringing small children out to dinner and my Grandsons were treated as equal members of the party. My 10 yr old Grandson said that his sea bream was very tasty and even the mussels on the dish were some of the best he has ever tasted(and he’s a foodie). My youngest grandson ,at just over a year ,tried food from each of our plates and really enjoyed his taster menu. The food was exceptional in quality and in presentation and we all left feeling we had enjoyed a great evening with great food which was good value for money. We will definitely return.

Historical environment matched with decent food. And good value. The fish of the day is a fine chunk of sea trout. The skin is crispy and the flesh is not dry. The miso (?) butter beans are stunning. House-smoked Sea trout rillettes for starter. Creamy but not heavy, goes well with the sourdough toasted or soft. (The lunch and early dinner sets are of great value.) The monkfish is innovatively wrapped in seaweed like a second skin. The taste has an interesting umami though a bit salty for me. The potato is indulgent too. Spinach in the summer greens are surprisingly good. Not slimy at all and beautifully green. Food came promptly and service is attentive, though it takes a while to pay. Seriously, come back to Cambridge please. Tucked away from the busy street, the restaurant and courtyard are a world of their own.

About the restaurant
We’re big on warmth, low on fussiness: stripped wood floors, high bar stools, painted brickwork and comfy leather banquettes. Sup your pint beside our polished-oak bar or tuck yourself away in the Snug behind the frosted glass partition. You can hear yourself talk, concentrate on the crossword or nod off quietly in the corner.

To help keep everyone safe, our teams will continue to wear face masks and we'd love you to do the same when nentering and moving around the pub and dining room.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding and we look forward to seeing you.

Everytime I visit Sunderland to either go to the Sunderland Empire or The Fire Station I always book The Engine Room for food. There is always a great choice of food and the menu is changed regularly. The food is always delicious, freshly cooked and most importantly hot. Would definitely recommend
