Situated in Sandsend, one of the most picturesque villages and a true hidden gem of the Yorkshire coast, Estbek house is an award winning and critically acclaimed restaurant with rooms. Estbek - often misspelt as ‘Estbeck’ or ‘Eskbeck’ - is a Georgian property, built circa 1750 and previously housing the Alum mining office. The beef and pear dish was outstanding. The trout and the salami dishes were very good but not outstanding and the sourdough bread was excellent. The Sicilian white wine was very good if a bit pricey. We would visit again.

We had a very nice meal, I thought it a little expensive. But we enjoyed it. I made a poor choice of desert, my fault, it was a bit heavy, for a chocolate mouse, as it was a slab of a chocolate mixture as it's centre peice, beautifully presented throughout.

West Witton
About the restaurant
Situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, The Wensleydale Heifer may be within easy reach of the A1 and M6 but it still feels totally rural. A traditional white-washed inn complete with leaded lights and swinging sign, The Wensleydale Heifer gives the visitor a real flavour of Britain meaning it’s popular not only with locals but with tourists searching for the real Yorkshire. From the lounge, with its comfortable leather settees, country pursuit paintings and imposing fireplace through to the wicker seating, beamed ceilings and eau de nil painted walls, the interior could have leapt from the pages of Country Homes magazine. The contemporary British menu includes seaood from across Britain plus locally sourced meat and veg, all prepared using the Wensleydale Heifer philosophy – keep it simple.

It was our first visit and definitely won’t be our last. From the moment we arrived, the welcome was superb, the staff so friendly, and the table we were given was perfect for our little dogs. The food was outstanding, the squid with wakame salad was a delight, my wife’s chilli and sesame prawns were delicious, and then the mains!! My wife had the “Most controversial dish”, the Heifer Lobster salad. She said it was one of the best meals she had ever eaten. I enjoyed the Steak and snails, truly outstanding but we have to mention the tempura cauliflower, I hate cauliflower with a vengeance but not any more!!! Many thanks to a wonderful team from the kitchen to front of house for making our visit truly memorable and we definitely will return on our next visit to Wensleydale. 😊🐶🐶😊
